I didn't say that you were the "dumbest". I said you weren't dumb. So your pointing out of the "qualifier" of "one of the" doesn't mesh.

Do you have any stats on how many of the 90% rely on the performance of the stock market for their retirement? I would think that's important to know.
Not enough people participate in the market. They don't understand it so they avoid it. The sad thing is that it's never been easier to dip your feet in with all of the retirement date oriented funds.

Does the Average American Have a 401(k)?
All that said, not everyone who's offered an employer-sponsored plan actually takes advantage of it. Of those 79% of Americans who get the choice to fund a 401(k), only 41% opt to participate. As such, just 32% of the total workforce is saving in a 401(k).
It is getting better though. Americans own more stock than ever
More Americans than ever are invested in the stock market. Just 30 years ago only about 30% of Americans owned any form of stock—now more than 50% do.
Bernie types don't like 401(k)'s and other defined contribution plans because they involve risk. They want the government (or at least employers) to assume the risk with defined benefit plans.
I don't read links, but I have to question the last part. Just about every government employee I've ever done a loan for has significant TSP (Thrift Savings Plan) accounts. And I'm guessing that most of them have their money in stocks and not bonds or fixed markets. That's a lot of "Bernie types" who have their retirement in the stock market.

The last part is my opinion based on my experience in Illinois. Are TSPs defined contribution or defined benefit plans. Illinois government and union plans are defined benefit. Yes, they're invested in the market but the benefits are set so if the market goes down the government/employers have to make up the difference.

TSP's are 401k's for the fed, you can choose however you'd like it invested. Mrs89 spent 18 years with the fed starting the week after she finished law school, so her TSP is fairly large (I've seen folks with TSP's in the millions). I wish the gov made up all the losses we've had over the years.

^Yeah but the rest of the world pays slightly more taxes and God forbid we have that over here, even though it actually ends up saving more money over someone's lifetime while simultaneously increasing quality of life.

I think future historians are going to look back at 1950s to 2050's America and figure out how in one century, it slowly degraded and was surpassed by nations all over the world. From the expansion of the military industrial complex to the worship of unfettered capitalism to the current grip of the conservative SCOTUS, it'll make a good case study. But with millennials and younger people today, I also have confidence they'll be studying how it shifted back to becoming one of the greatest nations on Earth in the latter half of the 21st century.
