I will say that it is possible that if Trump had proceeded according to what was suggested by previous research we might not have had to shut down as we did. He did horribly mishandle this situation as a result of thinking that he could do a partial travel restriction then all would be cool. All of the stuff that was done to ramp up testing could have been done a couple of months earlier than they were done.

It's quite possible that the economic situation we are in now wouldn't be what it is if Trump hadn't screwed up. No way to know for sure. The only way to know for sure if if we could go back in time, see what would happen if we responded along the lines of the way South Korea responded, and seen what happened.

But I don't think there's any question that Trump really whiffed.

So, using your logic, EVERY SINGLE OTHER LEADER IN THE FREE WORLD also whiffed. Because there’s not a SINGLE meaningful country that’s not in lockdown right now.

Fauci is suddenly a rock star. He certainly knows a lot about things like this. He's been working on disease spread for decades. But he has a controversial history. He is alleged to have done some shady stuff in the late '90's and ealry '00's with regard to HIV/AIDS. There is no evidence of any inappropriate behavior with this, though. I just don't think he is immune to mistakes and corruption. I'm trusting that the intense criticism he took 20 years ago is keeping him straight.

That’s asinine. Even though we’ll likely get a vacinne sometime in 2021, you have to assume we might not, or ever. Which means at some point THIS YEAR you just have to let the nation go on with life, let the thing run its course, and develop herd immunity. We can’t wait until 2021 (or later) to go open all business/industry, back to restaurants, bars, churchs, theaters, stadiums, arenas, airplanes, beaches, festivals, shopping centers, etc, etc..

While doing that can mitigate with mass virus & antibody testing, therapeutics.

So you've got no one. Xi, Merkel, Macron, Trudeau all dithered but Trump is the bad one? Trump is a despicable human being but he was in a no-win situation. Either he clamps down and is accused of overreacting (as he was with the China travel ban) or he doesn't and he's accused of dithering. The Orange Man Bad crowd is going to criticize him no matter what he does and the Orange Man Perfect crowd is going to ignore or rationalize his mistakes no matter what. They're mirror images of each other.

The federal government could have done more to help coordinate state activities and purchases but leaving shelter-in-place and other restrictions up to the states was absolutely the right approach in my opinion.
