I don’t disagree with any of that. But we’ve sacrificed many positive things for unsustainable convenience and I think we’re getting bitch slapped for it.89Hen wrote: ↑Mon May 04, 2020 8:10 amI think that's a bit much. It's life.
Our kids definitely live a MUCH different life than we did growing up in the 70's, but IMO it's a mixed bag of good, bad, smart, overkill...
We didn't use car seats.
We didn't wear seatbelts.
We didn't wear helmets.
We didn't use sunscreen.
We were allowed to walk to school with no adults, long distances, even as elementary school kids.
We stayed outside all day and all evening during the summer until your dad whistled for you.
Our sports coaches yelled at us when we fucked up.
I got put over a teachers knee in third grade.
Things change.

Damn coaches treated a water break like the water was gold. Today we are way over hydrated.

Too early to reopen - the second wave will be worse.
Income has been affected in the household (temporarily, will soon resume), expenses are higher.
The reopen early states are going to be new hotspots.
You have all the idiots that think requiring masks is "infringing on their Freedum" or other idiotic statements the far-right is churning out.

It's arguable that some places should have never shut down to begin with. And we have no idea what the 2nd wave will look like (if there is one). That statement essentially falls into the "stay locked down until there is a vaccine" bucket.dbackjon wrote: ↑Mon May 04, 2020 8:34 am Too early to reopen - the second wave will be worse.

Well this has boiled down to "saving lives". And technically, no life is "safe" until we have a vaccine. These lock downs keep getting extended a few weeks at a time. What exactly is changing, wrt to being "safe", over those few weeks until we have a vaccine?Gil Dobie wrote: ↑Mon May 04, 2020 7:53 amSee, we have a completely different view of safe. For smart states who don’t want to eat grandma or recognize the potential greater economic threat of opening too early its going to be 3-4 months of slow steps. What speeds that up is the Petrie dishes like Sweden and Georgia not seeing a spike and/or curative pharma plus track and trace programs.SDHornet wrote: ↑Mon May 04, 2020 8:44 amWell this has boiled down to "saving lives". How are expense higher? I have more disposable income than I've EVER had. Not eating out, not making frivolous trips to Target or Lowes or Home Depot or any of a number of other retail outlets....combine that with the fact that almost every lender has given a 90 day deferral of payments (if you choose to take advantage of that) and if your income hasn't been disrupted you should be swimming in cash right now.dbackjon wrote: ↑Mon May 04, 2020 8:34 am Too early to reopen - the second wave will be worse.

Are these the same smart states that want to drive Aunt Matilda into destitution because she gets all of her income from her rental properties, cousin Eddie who lost his job into alcoholism and eventual suicide, and burden little baby Lulu with debt in order to throw money at companies and people?kalm wrote: ↑Mon May 04, 2020 8:49 amFor smart states who don’t want to eat grandma or recognize the potential greater economic threat of opening too early its going to be 3-4 months of slow steps. Notice how very few had these economic fears a year ago when most Americans were still just $500 away from economic catastrophe?

the true test will be - when will you be willing to walk into a movie theater
Everything is visibly dirty

See, it's not the ACTUAL economy I'm worried about. Yes, the economy will eventually come back. It's the people BEHIND that economy. The lives that are destroyed. The lives that are lost. The things desperate people do when their livelihood is stripped away suddenly and permanently like that.kalm wrote: ↑Mon May 04, 2020 10:08 amOf course it does...and your economic fear porn is not all that different. Let me give you an example as to why he might not believe you..
You said that we should all just ignore Trump's words and judge him by his actions
while you spent the previous 8 years judging Obama by his words
Just as "an example" of why somebody might find you "suspicious" regarding what you believe

And I'm not Trump. I can't lie with that kind of ease. Or even have a fake persona with that kind of ease.

My economic fear porn? I've been calling for balancing the medical impacts with the sociological, psychological and economic impacts almost from the beginning. How is it fear porn if I'm calling for balancing the many impacts? Fear porn is using tales economic doom or killing grandma to argue for prioritizing one impact at the expense of others.kalm wrote: ↑Mon May 04, 2020 10:08 amOf course it does...and your economic fear porn is not all that different. What are the curative measures and vaccines for the economic impacts? We have things that have helped in the short-term but can we keep doing them for longer? At what cost? I have and will continue to argue that we can't keep throwing money at this problem. Government revenues are dropping and will continue to drop as long as people are out of work. IMO, continuing to print money to throw at people and companies is going to have some very serious long-term ramifications.
Americans refusal to save is a problem that was well known but has been further exposed by COVID-19.
