The air quality thing is an interesting one for sure. There's no denying reducing people going to work reduces pollution. The question is, will this slap in the face wake anyone up to the point where we actually DO something about it? My guess is barely.

I doubt it, but I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

This pandemic has given us a lot to think about, and perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to really change how society operates.

You just need to slow down.

Why not sacrifice those in despair, the infirm and grandma? The benefits would be yuge!

It'd be interesting to see how many people won't die due to better air quality and lighter traffic. Currently those are 90,000/yr and 40,000/yr, respectively (edit: in the US). Of course, pollution is typically cumulative over years.

There's probably a lot of other random effects on mortality well (people not seeing doctors out of fear, people losing their insurance, etc).

The US would have been much better prepared had we some sort of universal healthcare.
The flip side of that is that the US would also have been much better prepared if everyone bought their own insurance.

That said, our poor are certainly more effected than middle-class or rich Americans.

At the global level though, I've read numbers ranging anywhere from as "low" as 400,000 to as high as 1M+ that may have saved.
Saying worst per capita is just cover for the worst polluter, China.

I couldn't even read it for content, I don't know if I've seen that many misuses of "effect" for "affect" in one post in quite some time. I'm not a grammar curmudgeon, but geesh! :ohno:

Every time I use either "effect" or "affect" I have to look up the definition of the words just to remember if I am using them in the proper way and I still manage to get them mixed up from time to time. :chair:

I can't imagine they'll be the only system to do this. And now that the floodgates are open, we'll see more follow.

I genuinely feel bad for all the students missing out on key formative times; I can't imagine being in their shoes. But it's also a good lesson about life throwing you lemons, and having to step up to deal with them.

If you're an incoming freshman without a lot of scholarships, you make lemonade by asking for deferred admission and going to a community college for a semester or year. Get your gen-ed requirements out of the way at a fraction of the price.

I think it’s the beginning of the end for the corrupt, money-grubbing college experience as it’s currently designed. And honestly, good riddance.

The UC system will also likely do the same. CSU D2s have already called off fall sports. I think D1 will follow suit. Goodbye 2020 football season.

Goodbye 2020 football season in the fall of 2020 for at least some blue states. A # of conk states (see SEC and Big 12) are going to play football sometime during the 20'-21' school year come hell or high water.

As they should. A bunch of young healthy 20 year olds have a minuscule chance of getting seriously ill from the Chinese Flu.
