Nice. I've personally loathed that statue for years; I hope it gets torn down.

White House itself should be next, or at least renamed to honor the slaves who built it.

Cancel Culture has French Revolution feel to it with White Males being substituted for Aristocracy by those protesting. If this country had the issues that 18th century France had, then it would seem to be justified.

That is not to say that we don't have issues, but that they are not comparable to those that have historically caused this sort of reaction.

Rioting, looting, creating autonomist areas are unwarranted. Peaceful protests and political activism are important and appropriate.

What championship events, for any conference, would take place in Mississippi anyway? It is like the South Carolina thing, but with even less teeth as South Carolina at least had Charleston and hosted some events. What events would even take place in Mississippi? Are they even going to notice the boycott? I'm all for revising the flag and getting rid of the stars and bars, I just don't think this does it.

So here's one. Some folks pay for a plane to fly over the Burnley (English Premier League) stadium (games are being played but with no fans) with a "White Lives Matter Burnley" banner trailing behind it. I don't think there's any argument that the banner is in poor taste, especially given the tenor of the current times. With that said, I don't think there's anything patently illegal or criminal about it - there was no profanity involved, the expression itself is not illegal, so I don't see anything really unlawful about it. And mind you, English soccer fans pay for planes to carry banners all the time, and often they do to criticize the soccer club, the owners, the players, the coaches, etc. Freedom of speech and all.

The part I think is a bit controversial is that the local police in the area have announced that they have launched an investigation into this. Why would they need an investigation into something that is, from all looks of it, a perfectly legal case of public expression? What if the banner said Chinese Lives Matter? Or Welsh Lives Matter? Or so on? If there was a Nazi symbol attached to the banner sure, I could see an investigation. But why just for that banner and those words? Do you think an investigation like that would be okay in America?

The only thing that would matter is if Southern Miss was to host the CUSA football championship game (top team gets home field). It's a reasonable possibility as their program is decent. Other than that, there is nothing else that would matter.

BDKJMU wrote: Sun Jun 14, 2020 3:09 pm Columbus statue in Philly is protected by Italian Americans from leftists who showed up wanting to take it down:
A woman nearby held up a sign saying “Stand Up, South Philly Won’t Stand Down."

And another man, who declined to give his name, stood close to the statue while holding a rifle — one of at least two men in the plaza carrying guns.

Thomas Easterday, 50, was among the crowd of about 100 people milling around the marble Columbus figure. He said the goal of the gathering was simple.

“Protecting the statue from these rioters who want to take it down,”.....

....Easterday and others said their presence Saturday was as much to ward off any vandals as to send a message to Mayor Jim Kenney that they would not approve of removing the statue in the middle of the night — as Kenney did with the statue of former Mayor Frank Rizzo earlier this month...

..Those present at Saturday’s demonstrations said they considered Columbus an emblem of their heritage, and that any attempt to erase him would be a “hate crime.”...

....At Marconi Plaza Saturday, some attendees — who were largely male, white, and not wearing masks — called protesters “animals” or “thugs.” Others were more sympathetic, but said they were out patience with the violence or looting.

Joseph Pungitore, 38, draped in an Italian flag, said he lives nearby and has been frequently checking on the statue in light of the push to remove monuments connected to histories of oppression.

He planned to stick around until he has to go to work Monday if necessary. His son stood nearby, leaning on a baseball bat, but Pungitore clarified: “I’m standing for peace.”

“It would be over my dead body before they got to this statue,” said Anthony Ruggiero, 41, wearing an Italia jersey. “This is a part of history.”

Clash at Macaroni Plaza, site of the Columbus statue in S Philly, yesterday between the Italians, and the BLM/Antifa.

Philly's liberal mayor wants to move it because the left wing mob "are distressed by its existence".

Tues night Wisconsin: Democrat state senator attacked by BLM/ANTIFA protestors:
The unrest that unfolded Tuesday night began after 200 to 300 protesters marched through downtown Madison and escalated once they reached the state Capitol grounds. Some tried breaking into the Capitol building but were repelled by police inside with pepper spray...

... One protester was arrested after he allegedly went to a restaurant across the street from the Capitol with a baseball bat. The man, identified as Devenore Johnson, 28, spoke through a megaphone while walking around the establishment. He was arrested and was seen being carried by police to a squad car.

Others gathered near a condominium building and surrounded a tow truck, forcing the driver to abandon the vehicle. The crowd broke into buildings, and a Molotov cocktail was thrown into a city-county building. Windows at the Tommy Thompson Center, named for the former Republican governor, were smashed as well as lights at the Capitol.

Evers said there was “significant damage to state property.”

If that is their State Senator then just..wow. And of course the Do-Nothing / Know- Nothing Democrats have been appeasing this crowd the entire time that in no way will they try to stop it. They've given the group carte blanche to act this. The Republicans are equally complicit in their failed approach to social issues and their supporters being hung up on having monuments to traitors to the United States. I'm surprised they aren't clamoring for a memorial to Alger Hiss or Robert Hanson. Fucking Lost Cause movement has continued into the 21st Century. :ohno:

Agreed, there's just an abject failure of government and a capitulation when it comes to being leaders. And it's on both sides. The only things you see happening in politics right now is what we've seen for years - calculating how any of this can be spun into increasing chances to win the next election. I would say a pox on both houses, but clearly that's already happened and is firmly in place now.

And I would go even further that not only is it to increase chances to win the next election, but that there is almost zero thought as to what to do in office for whoever does win in November. Other than, of course, how to win the next election after that.

Her platform positions on Wikipedia look decent - but is she a libertarian wacko? I do like that she's a woman, I can go with the "I'm with Her" voting tagline like I did when I voted for Jill Stein last time. Especially with these two geriatric, misogynists running on the GOP and Dem tickets.
