People need to stop focusing on what color the cop and professor are, why should that matter?

What should matter in this country is what people do, how people act, and what they stand for. Not the color of their skin.
I'm guessing that a white professor would not get arrested in his own living room and hauled down to the station for disrespecting an officer...

 just guess

I would have been hauled downtown if I had not shown my ID, according to the officers that showed up at my door at 5:00am, when my alarm went off by mistake.

Cap'n Cat issues final ruling on the matter. It is decreed:

1. Obama should have reserved judgment before speaking as he did.

2. Officer Crowley does not, in fact, like blacks and was overly forceful with the Professor.

3. Professor Hayes used some unnecessary ghetto talk in dealing with Officer Crowley, thus enraging the latter.

Cap'n Cat's recommended remedy: Round of beers for all, shake hands, smile. Reppies for Obama for manning up and admitting he was wrong.

The Cap'n hath spoken.
Long live Cap'n Cat

It's all cool - everybody wins ultimately in this one
Cambridge cops will learn that a Harvard Professorial ID card should suffice as identification... and that you're going to get "verbally confronted" when you expect somebody in their own living room to provide more information than that.. PERIOD...

How many distinguished old dudes in a three piece suit (in their living rooms) need to come up with more than that as proof of who they are...?

It suffices as id that he is a real person. Not that he lives there, Cleets. I can't show my Villanova ID and expect someone to think I live anywhere on the main line, because I don't, but I have ID for the school. It's called fucking respect, Gates wanted it, but didn't have the respect enough to let the cop do his job and show a fucking lisence. It wasn't that he was just another uppity nig, it was that he was acting nigg--ish, the man is trying to bring me down, I don't have to do anything bull shit, woah is the black man. Until white people aren't all targeted by black as racists, I'll believe it, but it is about time some people learn most white peopel don't give a flying fuck what color your skin is, and if they did, you can sure as shit bet a kenyan wouldn't be in the white house.

When you get arrested and jailed on your own property I'll side with you on this one...
Until then... there's more at play here

BOTH individuals wanted respect and neither was giving any ground - and that should never be the reason for arresting cuffing and jailing a citizen on their own property in their own home...

Fair enough...
Please understand I have a bias against the notion that a law exists allowing American Citizens to be handcuffed and arrested simply because (and for no other reason) they pissed off a police officer... it simply opens the door wide - for suspicious factors regarding arrests

But I respectfully agree to disagree on this one...

But, let's look at something. The motherfvcker manned up to it the next goddamned day and is doing some diplomacy over it, bringing people together to discuss it.

What should matter in this country is what people do, how people act, and what they stand for. Not the color of their skin.
The problem is that you have a positive feedback loop with negative racial attitudes. You have incidents like the OJ trial (whether or not you think he was guilty, the fact is the race issue was allowed to take over whereas they should have stuck with the evidence), the Duke Lacrosse case, and all the successful lawsuits that proved that affirmative action programs have resulted in lesser qualified minorities being admitted into education programs over more qualified whites. These things result in less sympathy by whites for problems that are legitimate and not imagined by victim mentality. When there's less sympathy for black people, black people get their feelings hurt (as anyone would in that situation) and are less likely to recognize a good bit of the blame for black social problems are not the fault of racism or whites. This leads to more incidents like ones aforementioned. Repeat process. :shake: :shake:

I've got to hand it to Obama for this one. Obama acted stupidly by injecting the race issue into something that was supposed to be about healthcare, but I think he has done as well as you can do to keep this whole incident from being part of this vicious cycle.
