Going out on a limb there. ;)

FWIW, I heard a stat today that the only racial group less likely to be killed by a member of their own race are Asians. They are more likely to be killed by blacks. Can't find a study, but will keep looking.
I would guess that hate crimes against Asians have increased in the last year due to simple-minded idiots taking their frustration with the Coronavirus out on them.

So are you saying that both sides don't do it (i.e. calling it the Limey or UK variant isn't racist) or that bigotry toward people of European descent is OK?

I would argue that the track record of Chinese imperialism and oppression toward people they felt were inferior to them dwarves that of western nations. The Chinese were experts when the Germanic and Celtic tribes were trying to hold off Roman legions. So I'll ask again why is China virus racist and bad while UK or Brazilian variant isn't?
Sigh........

I knew where you were trying to go.

My point is that if you call it the China virus you’re most likely doing it to troll (SD here), or think it was a coordinated attack on the US by the Chinese government. In the latter case, you should be the type who wears masks and socially distances so we don’t let the fuckers get away with it. Sadly that’s mostly not the case.

The third option is simple racism.

Calling it the UK variant is more acceptable because no one is truly concerned about the racial oppression suffered by the Brits. I could complain about the appropriation of my Viking heritage or whine about the unfairness of being a middle aged, white male too.

I’m not saying in a perfect world you are necessarily wrong. You just missed the point of my sarcastic remark.
Wrong. You conveniently left off the belief that it was an accidental lab release due to shitty procedures (whether the virus was naturally occurring or engineered), followed by a coverup and allowing it to spread worldwide by sealing off Wuhan Province from the rest of China, but not the rest of the world.

I don't think it's a blue or red state problem JSO. I'm not sure many do. If anything I see more people saying blue states are too locked down, which should lead to fewer deaths, but your numbers there are practically a push.

But, FWIW Top 4 are Blue, 6 of top 7. Top 2 have more deaths than the bottom 30 states.
Bingo. More evidence lockdowns don't work..

Comparing states in the same region.

Minnesota 1211 deaths per million
Wisconsin 1126

Implemented mask mandate at peak of surge
North Dakota 1915

No mask mandate

More evidence of JSO using “data” that is comical in its inaccuracy. Just because the death/million in “red” states are slightly higher, that doesn’t mean it’s RED voters dying. It’s not like Trump got EVERY vote in those states. Are they asking political persuasion before you die, FFS? Jesus, man. I used to have some respect for you because of your education and your appearance of understanding data....this caricature you’ve become is really, really sad. TDS has fried your brain.

How does the number of suicides of school age kids in the last year compare to prior years?

I haven't been able to find stats on that yet. It would be great if we had a thread on that, instead of using the Covid thread where it gets less attention.

There could be a correlation between Covid restrictions and increased suicides so it is a relevant part of this discussion.

Could be, does some one have the numbers?

I personally knew 5 people the died of covid. I don't know anyone, and haven't seen any young people in the obits locally or back home in ND that committed suicide during 2020 and 2021.

Did do a deep dive, so went with this easy search and found this article.

Linky Dinky

But despite this common perception shared by both health care professionals and the public, there actually is not evidence at this point that the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a broad spike in youth suicide deaths or attempts. A recent study published in the journal Pediatrics compared suicide screening results on youth presenting to emergency departments for any reason in 2020 to the same month in 2019.5 The authors found no consistent increases in reported suicidal ideation or suicide attempts with scattered elevations found in some months during 2020 compared with the previous year (including February 2020 before the pandemic really began) but not others. Internationally, newly analyzed data from 2020 with regard to suicide deaths have suggested “either no rise in suicide rates ... or a fall in the early months of the pandemic.” In my home and, admittedly small, state of Vermont, data from the Department of Health have shown 93 suicide deaths across all ages as of mid-November 2020 compared with a 5-year average of 96.

1. Suicide rates in youth were going up before the pandemic. As it takes time to verify and analyze data from large populations, many of the reports on suicide that have been published and released in 2020 summarize data from prior years. Without looking closely, a news organization can easily slap on a headline that implies that the data were obtained during the pandemic.

2. Fluctuations tend to occur from year to year. Thankfully, youth suicide remains rare (although not rare enough). With small numbers, regular variations from year to year can look huge in terms of percentages, especially if one doesn’t pull back and look at longer trends over time.

3. People are reaching out for mental health services. The public health message to access support and treatment for COVID 19–related mental health struggles appears to be having an effect, but this increased demand should not necessarily be viewed as a proxy for suicidal ideation and attempts.

I'm not a lockdown supporter, but these states are on opposite ends of the country. You have to find common denominators other than population to compare them fairly.

Have a feeling the are a lot of Cali's that are saying F the lockdown, F the mask and F Newsom. Seeing that in Minnesota as the numbers are going up again.

From Fox News

On Thursday, the health department reported the largest week-to-week increase of the year in total COVID-19 infections associated with E-12 schools – 674. The weekly report tallied 7,465 infections among staff members and 8,720 among students – for a total of 16,185. All have been linked to attending or working in Minnesota schools of all kinds.
