Gets sticky when you talk about revising history that's already been revised. I'd argue that the "Lost Cause" revisionist history was and still is the most successful coordinated effort to revise history that we've ever seen in America. That's where the hyperbolistic idea of Lee being a gentleman and a genius came from, where the false idea that Grant was a persistent drunk with little military ability and a dysfunctional presidency came from, where the idea that slavery had little to do with secession and wasn't the leading reason for the Civil War came from, and ultimately why we have/had so many monuments to the Confederacy and people in it. We're just now fixing some of that, but we never fully will.

Yup. Grant's drunkenness was wildly exaggerated during the war...it only got amped up by the Lost Cause Hoax. Those Southern politicians really forked us over with their inability to get over a loss (sound familiar????)

Well, they were abated by the abject racism that pervaded the entirety of the country at the time. Amazed at the stories during Reconstruction and the flat out murder and massacre of so many just based on racism. People now point to the Tulsa massacre because it's been brought up, but that was almost commonplace in many places, and yes, more so in the South, for the prior 50 years. It's not like the rest of the country didn't know this was happening - their own racism made them perfectly okay with whatever the Lost Cause was spewing out. Might be another generation or so before we can fully cleanse history education of most of the Lost Cause propaganda.

I don't disagree. Americans LOVE To point to the South as the cradle of racism and hatred against blacks but seem to not know that white New Yorkers rioted and beat blacks to death during the Civil War. Blacks fleeing the South during the Great Migration weren't welcomed with open arms in Northern and Midwestern Cities (IIRC, the AFL supported segregation in the workplace.)

I hope you're right about the time left we have to endure the Lost Cause....it really is a hoax perpetuated by ignorance that should be squashed ASAP.

It wasn’t exaggerated. I’m a big fan of Grant, and I read the book. But he was a classic case of an alcoholic who had an epiphany and dragged himself out of it. Sherman was, too, and nearly committed suicide over it.

Be really careful with hagiographies. They are written by disciples.

Grant was practically a boy general by modern, and 20th century standards. A Brig General and Maj Gen at age 39, by age 41 he was commanding all union armies, equivalent to a 4 star today. In early April 1865 Lee surrendered to a 42 yr old (43 at the end of that April) Grant at Appomattox..

He had a problem for sure (and one of his coping methods was keeping Rawlins so close) but his drunkenness was wildly exaggerated during the war by other Union Generals - that's straight out of Chernow's book.

It's incredible it worked out like that. And he was going up against Lee who was 58 and had had considerable more time in command.

His rise was the power of politics and being a good soldier. He was denied recommission so but with the help of Congressman Washburn, he was appointed to the Illinois Militia (and then further promoted with the help of Washburn and then Lincoln).

Grant did have a genius for battle and strategy. Have you read Chernow's biography?

This post reminds me about the old joke about the difference between Northern and Southern racial attitudes.

In the South, whites hate blacks as a race but love them as individuals.

In the North, it’s the other way around.

I can't speak for the North, never having lived there, but for the older generation especially, that's true. I've heard a lot of sentiments growing up with the Silent Generation as grandparents, aunts and uncles to attest to that (not to mention it was coming from my dad's high class family as well as mom's poor, working class family).

Anytime I see a pic of a guy from the 1st half of the 20th century, I always wonder why the heck did they jack their pants up so high?

For the same reason you see a pick of a guy from the 2nd half of the 20th Century with their pants down around their knees...it's just the style man! (j/k - I don't know why)
