That's kind of what I thought of them back in '90 when I went suv shopping.
Well that may be one case but they were so wildly popular that it just may be that there are a lot more of those still out on the roads due to their popularity. Those things were everywhere in the mid 90's.

Well there's gonna be enough parts at the junker's to keep what's left of 'em dieseling and fartin' along for quite a while longer.

Interesting that the clunker motor and drivetrain can not be sold or reused for parts.

I understand that they are trying to keep the low mileage machines off the road.

I used a similar program to buy my car here in Texas. Helped me get money for my crappy car. But then again I am responsible enough to buy a car with payments I can afford.

Would be a great program if people knew how to save/spend.

Ah, yes. The concept of "unintended consequences". I predicted this as soon as the cash for clunkers program was announced. I swear, every decision is made in a fucking vacuum. :shake: :shake: :shake:

http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/ ... 13-ON.html
We're struggling and a lot of us small guys are going out of business," said James Dameron, sales and finance manager at Chase Motors in suburban Richmond, where sales are down about 30 percent.

About 40 million used vehicles are sold a year, four times the number of new cars, said Keith Whann, an industry expert and chief executive of Columbus Fair Auto Auction in Columbus, Ohio. About a third of the used sales come from independent dealers.

Mom and Pop dealers typically sell just 20 to 25 vehicles a month and keep 40 to 45 vehicles on their lots, a fraction of the inventory for bigger dealerships, Whann said. So when the owner of a 1995 Ford Explorer opts for a new car, and the old SUV goes away forever, the repercussions are felt quickly. Especially for a majority of these dealers who have fewer than six employees.
More Obama brilliance on display.

This past week my mom traded in her 1989 model year Bronco II and with the rebates (plus a touch of haggling) was able to drive off with a new vehicle for close to 8,000 below the sticker price.

Rock on Cash for Clunkers!

Everybody's going to be driving shiny new cars for a couple of months, and the disposable income they (maybe) had now can't be used for buying used cars, furniture, electronics, or other durable goods. I wonder how long before we have another subsidy to support those industries who feel slighted by the emphasis on automotive.

For the record, I know how deep the tentacles of the car industry go and how many individuals build a product that ends up in a vehicle somewhere in the supply chain. Cash for Clunkers may be the most effective quick term government program enacted, but time will tell if it has negative impacts elsewhere.

Yea, but the supply of reasonably low mileage used cars will explode in 5 - 10 months when all these folks who can't make their payments start dumping the cars... :coffee:

That could be the case. However, from what I saw when I went with my mom to buy her car the dealerships are doing a pretty good job of due diligence in making sure folks can afford the vehicle.

For the record, my mom, a twenty year retired military veteran, wrote a check straight out for the purchase price. So let's not group everyone into that category.. :shake:

I won't...and I'm sure lots of dealerships are doing due diligence...but with what we've seen recently, there will be quite a number of folks who got in over their heads and dealership who took shortcuts...

The downside is that the Clunkers are being destroyed, and not going to be on the used car market. When these folks lose their cars they will have nothing to look at on the used car lots. Inventory will just dry up or dealers will have to charge a premium on what used to be a cheap car.

Don't worry, there are still millions of clunkers to be had.

Remember, by definition, these cars are the dregs of the dregs - worth less than $4,500. Great to get off the road PERMENTANLY.
