I used a similar program to buy my car here in Texas. Helped me get money for my crappy car. But then again I am responsible enough to buy a car with payments I can afford.

Would be a great program if people knew how to save/spend.

I wonder how long before we have another subsidy to support those industries who feel slighted by the emphasis on automotive.

For the record, I know how deep the tentacles of the car industry go and how many individuals build a product that ends up in a vehicle somewhere in the supply chain. Cash for Clunkers may be the most effective quick term government program enacted, but time will tell if it has negative impacts elsewhere.

That could be the case. However, from what I saw when I went with my mom to buy her car the dealerships are doing a pretty good job of due diligence in making sure folks can afford the vehicle.

For the record, my mom, a twenty year retired military veteran, wrote a check straight out for the purchase price. So let's not group everyone into that category..

I won't...and I'm sure lots of dealerships are doing due diligence...but with what we've seen recently, there will be quite a number of folks who got in over their heads and dealership who took shortcuts...
