Big picture! Exactly! :thumb:

Develop existing domestic resources with existing and edge technologies NOW to keep the economy growing for the next fifty years, while investing in longer term nuclear and other non-carbon energy technologies for the future.

No need for socialism, political polarization or economic chaos in the meantime. :shake:

Cash for clunkers is NOT a big picture solution, dawg.
Didn't say it was, read it again. :coffee:

Yeah, $3 billion. Peanuts. And not a single job will be saved or created, nothing is being "stimulated" except the short-term impact to the auto builders bottom line.

Sad but true, although I disagree that our short-sightedness is impossible to overcome.

I also note that socialism is NOT a short term pain....
I think I've seen enough of 88's posts to speak for him.....neither of us would ever support socialism, so I'm not sure where that comment comes from...

On your other comment...while not impossible to overcome, our short-sightedness is very much a part of our national psyche...in business, in government, even in development of things like sports teams...the here and now are more important than effective long-term planning...

Jon---what happens when the $3 billion runs out? Or is this going to be ANOTHER entitlement program that will NEVER be able to go away? :coffee: :coffee: :coffee:

Last week, some dude turned in a freaking Maserati under the Clunkers program. I was shocked when I heard that on the news. Well, it WAS '80s era and about on it's last legs, but still....dude could have sold it as an antique and gotten more from a guy wanting to restore it....

Washington (AP) - Billed as a way for the government to put more fuel-efficient vehicles on highways, the $3 billion Cash for Clunkers program sold thousands of commuter-friendly cars, including hybrids. But as it turns out, the most common deals replaced old Ford or Chevrolet pickups with new ones that get only marginally better gas mileage, according to an analysis of new federal data by The Associated Press.

The single most common swap -- which occurred more than 8,200 times -- involved Ford F150 pickup owners who took advantage of a government rebate to trade their old trucks for new Ford F150s. They were 17 times more likely to buy a new F150 than, say, a Toyota Prius.

The fuel economy for the new trucks ranged from 15 mpg to 17 mpg based on engine size and other factors, an improvement of just 1 mpg to 3 mpg over the clunkers.

Traded my '00 Dakota (16 mpg) for a '09 Tacoma (25 mpg). The difference is noticable.

If your old ride was worth a flock at all, you would have been many dollars ahead to sell it yourself, and deal for a cash deal on the new ride. Once you trade in, even if it is govt dough, you give up all leverage on the sticker price, they merely jostle with your "trade in" figures to hit your hot button.

I got stuff over ten years old and with well over a hunnert thou on them that I could sell for more than the 4k or whatever credit.... 8-)

Pay attention to what you are buying, notice the most commonly traded in "clunker." 8-) 8-) 8-)

'00 Dakota with 185K, bald tires, been tipped on it's side, body by teenaged son.........I got a very nice deal plus a 56% increase in gas mileage. 11k, tax and license, included.

Bump.

Latest study suggests Cash for Clunkers program actually caused consumers to spend $3 billion LESS in the economy during that 9-11 month period all while costing the taxpayers an additional $3 billion.

Donk economics at it's finest.
