For landscaping crews its completely unfeasable.https://www.latimes.com/california/stor ... af-blowersBerman said the state has set aside $30 million to help professional landscapers and gardeners make the transition from gas-powered equipment to zero-emission equipment, but an industry representative said that’s woefully inadequate for the estimated 50,000 small businesses that will be affected by the law.
Andrew Bray, vice president of government relations for the National Assn. of Landscape Professionals, said the zero-emission commercial-grade equipment landscapers use is also prohibitively expensive and less efficient than the existing gas-powered lawn mowers, leaf blowers and other small machinery. For example, a gas-powered commercial riding lawn mower costs $7,000 to $11,000, but its zero-emission equivalent costs more than twice that amount, he said.
Another major expense will be batteries. Bray said a three-person landscaping crew will need to carry 30 to 40 fully charged batteries to power its equipment during a full day’s work.
“These companies are going to have to completely retrofit their entire workshops to be able to handle this massive change in voltage so they’re going to be charged every day,” Bray said.
This affects the commercial people the most as they use their equipment non-stop. Imagine cutting down eucalyptus trees (imported and planted all over SoCal) with an electric chainsaw for a day or so. The amount of batter packs it will take to make it through a working day is going to be very large.
You can use one for a topper or de-limber but that is just an intermediate use case.

Plug-in electric chainsaws are much stronger than battery-powered but you need access to electricity. I had one and bought a 100 ft extension cord to cut down buckthorn.Winterborn wrote: ↑Sun Mar 06, 2022 4:44 pmResidential and commercial use cases are two different animals.BDKJMU wrote: ↑Sun Mar 06, 2022 12:52 pm

They used to be, but the new packs are on par with the plug-in varieties. And you do not have to worry about cutting cords and electrocuting oneself (accident rate is on par with their gas powered counterparts). Or amperage losses that shorten the life of the electric motor due to long extension cords.UNI88 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 06, 2022 4:52 pmPlug-in electric chainsaws are much stronger than battery-powered but you need access to electricity. Residential and commercial use cases are two different animals.
This affects the commercial people the most as they use their equipment non-stop. The amount of batter packs it will take to make it through a working day is going to be very large.

Plus what are you going to run an electric plug in chainsaw (or battery) off of when a storm rolls through and there is no power or a firecrew needs to cut a firebreak? Heat kills lithium-ion batteries (and what does SoCal have plenty of?), plus too much heat can cause them to explode unexpectedly.
There is a time and place for electric, commercial is not it (yet). Residential is already going there as the use cases are so much less severe. This is just another dumb bit of overreach that is going to have consequences that the legislators didn't think of. Which is typical of "feel" good, publicity driven legislation that has become so common in certain states these last few years (or longer).
The exemptions that will be added to this bill are going to be many and the only thing it will accomplish is to create an inconvenience for the common public.

I plan on having something similar on my Shome (along with a Tesla Powerwall), but the energy density of fuel and its ability to be portable isn't something one can just wave away with a hand gesture or legislation.
