Energy Crisis
Since this is going to get a lot worse I thought it deserved its own thread.
Nord Stream 1: Russia switches off gas pipeline citing maintenance
Shutdown at short notice by state-owned Gazprom disrupts European efforts to stockpile for winter
Russia has stopped the flow of gas via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to Europe, citing the need to carry out repairs, in a move that has heightened already acute nervousness over the reliability of winter energy supplies.
The halt on the Baltic Sea pipeline at 5am on Wednesday would last for three days, Gazprom, the Russian state energy company said. It had warned two weeks ago that the outage was due but the German government said it had not been formally told, receiving the information instead via social media after it was posted on Gazprom’s Telegram channel.
In recent months, the gas flow had been reduced to 40% of expected levels. In July, the flow was stopped for scheduled maintenance and resumed again after 10 days but at only 20% of capacity, with Moscow blaming the failure of Germany to return vital equipment due to sanctions imposed on Russia.
The German government rejects the claim, calling it a “pretence”. It said Nord Stream was “fully operational” and that there were no technical issues.
Since invading Ukraine, Russia has cut off gas supply to Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and Poland completely, and reduced flows via other pipelines.

Re: Energy Crisis
Europe’s Energy Crisis Is Getting Worse as Natural Gas Prices Soar
Europe’s energy crisis is deepening and could be approaching a critical point as Russia once again halts gas flows to the continent.
The month of August saw fresh inflation highs, with Eurozone inflation jumping to 9.1%. Energy was unsurprisingly the biggest driver, although the annual rate of energy inflation fell to a slightly less staggering 38.3% from 39.6% in July.
It comes after German inflation rose to 8.8%, according to data released Tuesday, a 40-year high.
But that only tells part of the story. German year-ahead power prices, Europe’s benchmark, hit €1,000 per megawatt-hour for the first time on Monday. At start of 2020 it was just below €40.

Re: Energy Crisis
Analysis: Full gas storage no fix for Europe's winter energy crunch
EU gas storage 80% full, on track to hit filling target early
Analysts warn stored gas not enough to cover winter
Deep cuts in gas demand needed to avoid fuel shortages
BRUSSELS, Aug 31 (Reuters) - The European Union is on track to beat targets for filling gas storage, but analysts warn the bigger factor for energy security this winter will be whether countries can slash consumption enough to ensure stored fuel lasts through the coldest months.
Following a scramble for fuel over the summer after top European gas supplier Russia invaded Ukraine, Europe's gas storage is now 79.94% full, Gas Infrastructure Europe data shows, setting up countries to exceed their target to have 80% full storage by November.
In a normal year that could cover Europe's winter peak in gas use. But in 2022, with Russian flows already sharply lower - the amount of gas it sends through Nord Stream 1, its main pipeline route into Europe, is at just 20% of capacity - storage will not make up the balance.
Full gas storage could sustain European countries for, at best, about three months, according to Aurora Energy Research. In Germany, home to nearly a quarter of the EU's storage, stored gas could meet 80 to 90 days of average demand.

What a bunch of horseshit. Environmentalists have zero influence and are only used as an excuse to keep prices up.

But yeah, we’re going to ban gas cars, and our grid can handle every household having 1-2 electric cars.

Good to know that stating a proxy war with your energy supplier is a bad idea.

Our legislature just passed a law to ban sales of gasoline cars after 2035. Something tells me the grid won't be ready for that influx of EVs hitting the system.

Read the CAISO (electric system manager in Cali) press release. It specifically says don't charge your EV.
From 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.:
Avoid using major appliances and charging electric vehicles.

Re: Energy Crisis
The pandemic changed the appeal and functionality of mass transit and that reality needs to be factored into these debates.
Add that to what homelessness and flash riots have done to the appeal of urban living and fewer people and employers are going to want to be in urban areas. Density is a harder sell now then it was 3 years ago.
This is an example of people on the fringe advocating for competing interests while not acknowledging the conflicts.

Re: Energy Crisis
Do you deny that the appeal of city living has dropped? I love cities and 3 years ago I would have enjoyed living in downtown Portland. Not anymore. The homeless camps, the risk of my car being broken into, the increased possibility that as a middle-aged white male I could be threatened and attacked because of my "privilege", etc. outweigh by walkability and proximity to restaurants, shows, etc.kalm wrote: ↑Thu Sep 01, 2022 11:02 amYet here we are with decreasing resources, decreasing affordable land but increasing growth…still living in large cities.UNI88 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 01, 2022 9:28 am

FTR, I used our light rail system on a regular basis before the pandemic. I don't think I've used it since and don't plan to.
Yes, conflicts require resolution but resolution frequently requires compromise. The all-or-nothing approach taken by the fringes doesn't allow for compromise. They're absorbed in the righteousness of their cause and will brook no compromise.
"Fringe" is a subjective term just like "centrist" and "center". IMO you have left your post-partisan center and moved to the fringe.
