There may be something of a "trend," but it sure isn't true in every case. One team that didn't play in 2020 due to COVID is the #2 seed and clearly unfounded rumors are flying that the coach will not only not be fired, but will RESIGN to take over Cal and several other places. Yet all that we fans see are signs of a guy in love with where he is and enjoying the success he has engendered there....

The Bucs have gone with DII Albany State head coach Gabe Giardina. Before going to ASU, Giardina was the offensive coordinator at Charleston Southern under Jamey Chadwell.
Dad HC, son OC, other son QB (that somehow made BSC honorable mention ) with son's g/f as FB admin. Yeah, everything was going to work out just fine.
I thought UNC deserved credit for making a splashy hire (what did they have to lose?), but I gotta give them even more credit for pulling the plug early. Maybe credit is the wrong word since its a self inflicted wound, but I figured they'd just let the remainder of the contract run its course. Things can't get much worse, right?
I honestly don't think it could have gone much worse for them and that regime than it did, especially with everything outside of the games. When you have players saying "thank god" when their coach gets fired, that's never a good sign.
They might not win many (any?) games next season, but for the culture and program, there's nowhere to go but up.
I really feel for Cal Poly fans. It always seemed weird that Baldwin and that staff were there, like they were severely overqualified. Guess this was inevitable.

4-21...Overqualified?
Thoughts? Anyone see this coming? I thought Baldwin would eventually get this going, but maybe recruiting to a place that has a higher admissions standard than a 2.0 and a pulse made it hard for him to overcome?

Given this move, I wonder if he ever took the job seriously at all. Sure seems like it was just something for him to do while he waited for a better opportunity.

Maybe. They've had a history of success, though. I distinctly remember the 1997 Cal Poly trip (my only road trip that year, at my own expense, though I did stay with the team), when the Mustangs shut us out 45-0 to finish 10-1 (lone loss to Liberty), and the fans chanting "Playoffs!". Cal Poly got snubbed despite their #18 ranking. Why? Too many D-II games: the D-II #7 Manure Pile (only a one-point win for CP), W. Montana, W. New Mexico, and Simon Fraser (Canada). Sure, they DID beat #17 UNI and #18 Dayton and had a I-A victory (NM State in OT), but is that really enough when you're playing THAT many D-II games? ROFL....

Yes, I have thoughts. I think he sucks. He signed a seven year contract and didn't complete half of that term. There were glimpses of the high powered offense that was promised but the program never even started to gel under his leadership. The defense was horrific under his tenure. After a couple years he felt he didn't have the chops to do the job so he quit. I think it's fair to question whether his reputation is earned. He had a few very good years after inheriting a well stocked program at EWU and had the good fortune to have a couple once in a lifetime talents on his roster. He's been pretty bad since. A gut punch to the CP program for sure.

Thanks. That's too bad for Poly, but I think with the Madden Center coming into the fold, you guys won't have a problem landing a solid HC. Think you guys go back to the traditional triple option of stick with the modern version of the triple option? Does the fan base have a preference?
Cal Poly will announce their new head coach tomorrow. The job recipient isn't officially confirmed, but pretty much everyone is saying it'll be Paul Wulff.

That might be a good hire. I assume he continues the move away from the TO? He was never a TO guy before. Probably a hybrid offense like we’re seeing so much of today. 300 + lb OL’s with high SAT’s don’t grow on trees.

300+ lb OL's and the TO? I'm not very with CPSLO's OL history but the TO is traditionally run with smaller more nimble OL's. The service academies aren't getting 300+ lb OL's

That’s exactly my point.
I interpreted your post to mean that they should probably run a hybrid offense rather than the TO because 300+ lb OL's don't grow on trees.
FTR - UNI has no problem developing 300+ lb OL's.
