'Writing is on the wall,' ally tells Sanford

(CNN) -- Two Republican state lawmakers on Tuesday met with South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, under fire for an extramarital affair and questionable spending, and told him to resign -- but the governor rejected their advice.

Sanford ally Rep. Nathan Ballentine told CNN that he and Rep. Gerry Simrill had a private talk with the governor at the State House for about 40 minutes and warned him that unless he steps down, House Republicans would likely impeach him.

"Barring some swing of momentum in his favor, I told him the writing is on the wall," Ballentine told CNN. "I thought there could be a change in scenery and he could put an end to it all, but if he doesn't, members of the House will take things into their hands."

I just got an email from Andre Bauer's office saying that he will be having a conference about the investigation into Gov. Sanford's activities at the State House today. The message says it was to be at noon today, so I assume whatever he was going to announce is already out there.

If Sanford is anything it's stubborn. I wouldn't be surprised to see him hang on until they drag him out of the mansion

There's very little face for Sanford to save at this point - being stubborn and making a mockery of the state house won't help. He should step down.

Apparently Bauer is saying if Sanford steps down and Andre takes over, he will not run for governor in 2010.


CID90, do you think he would even after saying he wouldn't? Or is he not going to run anyway? or does he realize that Sanford is not going to step down so what the hey?

Not sure. Andre has political aspirations, but I am not sure that after his last few years as LG that he really wants to go the next step. Plus, I cannot vouch for his integrity. Not saying he doesn't have any, but that I just don't know. I think that his apparent immaturity (speeding incidents, etc) could be mistaken for a lack of integrity, but I am not sure.

He has ridden his charisma and personality to where he is. If he has some creative ideas on how to govern, he could potentially be a great governor. He certainly has the energy. I just have not seen anything to indicate that he would be anything other than a caretaker. At this point, I would take him at his words, but that is mainly based on gut feeling. I guess I could always call him up and ask, but that might be assholish of me. "Hey Andre, were you serious when you said you wouldn't run for re-election?"

The thing that bothers me about him is that I know him fairly well personally, but as a politician I just don't feel like I know enough about him. Whenever we have talked, it has been about goofy things, like the scottish games at Furman or fishing in Charleston or whatever. I don't think I have ever had a political discussion with him.

I guess that's your answer.... a guy who is loosely acquainted with him who cannot decide if he is an honest injun or not.

He may change his mind on running for governor between now and then but I think the maturity issue would certainly raise its head. On the other hand, most of us thought Sanford was mature
