There's no way in hell it'll happen, but back to reality:
For all of the reasons stated I don't see the Missoula business community coming up with $300,000 in the next month or so for something with questionable returns. The university has made the proposal but they have nothing to bring to the table other than the fact that it would gain national media attention.
Add in the weather, piss poor airport connections, and it's a no brainer. It'll never happen..........
Missoula's business community would have to raise as much as $300,000 by October. That's the profit UM suspects Missoula would need to guarantee the NCAA for its bid to be competitive. A financial institution would need to guarantee at least 75 percent of that amount before UM could even submit a bid.
The university cannot financially contribute to that expense, as it operates on tax dollars and tuition money, said executive vice president Jim Foley. However, it's willing to facilitate the bid process and, if successful, oversee preparations for hosting.
The $300,000 guarantee would come in addition to several required facility upgrades. The stadium would need temporary lighting, as the game would likely occur at night. That could run as much as $100,000, Maes said. The press box and visiting locker room might also need upgrades.
The NCAA not only runs the event, but profits from ticket sales. UM would not.[/b]However, hosting the game would boost Missoula's economy. Tourists would eat in local restaurants and sleep in local hotels. Plus, Missoula would gain national attention through media coverage, they said.

TXST inaccessible? We're 30 miles S of Austin and 30 miles N of San Antonio, both of which have airports. (SM has a Municipal Airport) Between the 2 is an interstate. The stadium is less than 2 miles off that interstate and can be seen from it. (especially now)Ursus A. Horribilis wrote:TXST in particular is working on the fan support and I like all the excitement from the posters that I know on here and have met in person but they don't traditionally support their own team in those kinds of numbers and I doubt that it would happen if they weren't in it.BlackFalkin wrote:
Ummmmmmmmm. Shut up. My vote is for Texas State's stadium. All they have to do is add 5,000 temp seating in the endzones. [2,500 in each]... them texas folks would fill it just fine, I reckon'
Seating - this off season they will bowl in the N endzone, adding 8,400 seats, bringing seating to 24,308. For the 2005 FCS playoffs we filled beyond capacity. I think we could manage.
In recent years our home attendance has been better. It was just down last year because the majority of our wins were on the road and the students were clueless. I think the conference champ thing caught alot off guard (the morons) The Drive is changing that and making students more aware, including a freshman orientation camp that includes info on athletics. Plus more advertising. Finally have admins that get it.
Biggest problem I'd see would be hotels. There are 5 (I think) in SM but Austin and SA would accommodate alot of folks.
HOUSTON SUCKS!

On the seating I said exactly what you did in that there has been improvement but it has not traditionally been real good for your own team. You are adding 8,400 seats which means you have struggled to fill 16,000 when YOUR OWN team is doing good let alone if there were two teams there that nobody around San Marcos or that area of Texa gives a shit about. The extra seats will be available but will they be filled is what I am getting at.
I wasn't taking a shot at TXST in any way as I was saying that they are starting to make strides (which you echoed). Blaming the clueless students though is kinda weak, if they weren't there, they weren't there...no excuses.

Re: Montana to bid for 2010 FCS Championship
Ursus, You didn't say that, someone else did. I was replying to several posts in one. Sorry if it came off that way. I think the attendance will take care of itself if we keep winning amd I would bet the stadium would fill up nicely for a NC game. Especially with UTSA coming in soon and possibly UT homers that would come to see all the hoopla. Add to that other SLC and SWAC fans and the fans from the 2 schools that would be in it.
I see it as a challenge and, about the students, (cause too many alums are those UT homers) if you have 30k students it would be nice to be able to fill the 7500 student side. As I said, winning will do that.
Our avg last season was 11k+. Hopefully it will be better in 2009. Building a winning tradition is tough. Last year was only our 6th winning record since going IAA/FCS. Any.....who.

If we're talking about weather in Chatty then there seems to be an inordinate amount of rain there. Especially in 2000. That was some major FN rain.bobbythekidd wrote:No, Chatty is cold in December. It's been some time (2000) and it might be he last time I wore a coat.Skjellyfetti wrote:

It seemed extremely warm and humid when we landed in Chatty this year. It was 70 and I felt like I was being choked walking into the airport. Of course we had left -20 temps that week in Missoula so...

Missoula in January?

Then again, does't Boise State host a bowl game? Just as sense making - Humanitarian Bowl.
How about Idaho State, its indoors but holds about 500 fans! lol

Since UM is awesome at football moving the title to Missoula, UM could just sell the busses, they'd never have to play another road game! They'd set an NCAA record 15-0 with 11 home games.

There's a helluva big difference between the Missoula climate (which winterwise is really mild as far as Montana goes) and that of Boise St. Just saying.......................weberwildcat wrote:Missoula in January?

CatMom, I for one said that Tx St wasnt as accessible and I stand by that statement. Specifically I said that "Texas State has the same issue that Montana has in that it is less accessible by car than Chatty". San Marcos might be relatively easy to get to from most FCS schools by air but it isn't as accessible by car. Chatty is within reasonable driving distance of Appalachian State, Delaware, JMU, Georgia Southern, etc. More students will be able to come up with the cash necessary to drive to the game than will be able to afford a flight. Not meant to be a knock on Tx St but just an opinion about why San Marcos might not be as desireable a location as Chatty or another location in the southeast.CatMom wrote:Ursus, You didn't say that, someone else did. I know that this idea has been posted before but why not hold it in UNLV's stadium in Las Vegas? Great atmosphere for a football game, nice field and stadium and the chance to visit the casinos, clubs ect. would probably bring even more fans to the game .

Even worse----Tacoma Washington. Are you aware that the 1985 Championship game between GSU and Furman drew a whopping 5,306? And the 1986 game fared even WORSE, GSU beat Arkansas State in front of 4,419.danefan wrote:Or Wichita Falls, TX.......AZGrizFan wrote:

The folks in Tacoma never heard of Georgia Southern or Furman. Why should they? They're fixated on the University of Washington (which no doubt you guys have never heard of).
