Whether which crimes should be legally punished isn’t the argument here. We’re all against crime. Vigilantism is illegal too.

It was plastered all over Twitter. There was no seed needed to be planted. It’s a cheezey song reminding me of Toby Keith’s jingoistic stuff during the Iraq War. It’s meant to be a dog whistle. I’m just observing the social commentary. A flex by the right, the manufactured outrage at it by the left.

Did it plant a seed with you because it shows the scourge of small town USA - the hippie Antifa types - what America’s all about? Puhtang!

Shows them!
Your reaction to this song reminds me of BDKKKaren's reaction to drag shows. :coffee:
Here…I’ll help your argument….

I just watched the video and listened to the song for the first time (I'd read the lyrics but hadn't actually listened before). I'm still not seeing it the way you are.

Given a choice between letting people carjack an old lady, rob a liquor store, or spit in a cop's face get off easy or get the crap beat out of them, I'll take get the crap beat out of them. I'd prefer they were arrested, charged and tried but that doesn't seem to be an option in places like Portland. Aldean's warning to AnTiFa types isn't wrong. If they bring their bullsh!t to a lot of small towns they better hope they get arrested before the locals get ahold of them. I've said it before but while circumstances may explain someone's behavior they do not excuse it. There should be consequences for breaking the law, destroying property, harming others, etc.

Where did you first hear about the song? Was it a progressive/left wing site/news source? Did it plant the seed that the song was filled with jingoism and fear of the outsider so that's what you heard/saw when you listened/watched the video? I would guess that you had a bias against the song before you even heard it and that bias shaped your opinion and responses on this thread.

Too many people on both sides are getting their information from sources that are trying to shape their opinion not inform them. This song is a good example of that.

Yes?
Yes.

What is legitimately wrong with the song/video?
  • As Sheryl Crow says, “there’s nothing small-town or American about promoting violence,” Aldean should know better, “having survived a mass shooting”.
  • Singing in front of the Maury county courthouse in Tennessee where a black man, Henry Choate, was lynched in 1927 is at best in poor taste and at worst intentionally provocative/bigoted.
  • It glorifies vigilantism.
What is BS/hypocritical in left wing complaints about the song/video?
  • It glorifies gun violence. How long has the left said nothing about rap / hip hop songs that glorify misogyny, gangs and violence? Guns are as much a part of rural culture as gangs are a part of inner city (not just black or Hispanic) culture. Why is this a big deal but the other isn't?
  • It's racist. Why? Because it says you won't get away with carjacking old ladies, robbing liquor stores or violent & destructive protests? The location in front of the courthouse is questionable but not overtly racist.
  • While glorifying vigilantism is wrong, it wouldn't even be a point of discussion urban crime and lawlessness were prosecuted as they should be. The left is okay with letting criminals off but then gets upset when ordinary citizens say they aren't going to stand for it? Where are the complaints about Soros DAs and their refusal to enforce the law?

I agree with Crow.

You’re ascribing many things to the left. I don’t disagree but as resident commie, “urban crime and lawlessness” are not ok with me either. Defund the police was not only a bad idea but stupid marketing.

This is a good example of where I agree with your take on extremism.

I just hope Antifa doesn’t attack those small towns. ;)

I'm ascribing many things to the left based on personal experience and it's not just about defunding the police. It's about holding people accountable for their actions. Blacks and their allies peacefully protesting against police violence is okay, blacks and their allies violently protesting and destroying property is not okay. They should have been arrested, charged and tried. Same with shoplifters and other criminals that Soros DAs are letting off the hook. The people who suffer

I live in Portland and I've seen the impact of the soft on crime and criminals methodology. A local man was cited/arrested 4 times in 1 week for breaking windows at local businesses. Each time he was released soon after to go out and do it again. I know a lot of honest, hard-working, law-abiding citizens that would like to crack him in the skull if they saw him doing it again. They're tired of it and have had enough. Who should be criticized? Them as possible "vigilantes" or the justice system that is failing them?

People in those small towns won't stand by and watch if AnTiFa comes.

That’s a good point but hypocrisy on left vis a vi rap lyrics pales to their hypocrisy regarding gun violence on screen. This was posed on here a decade or so ago- a bunch of Hollywood A list libs did a video decrying gun violence and calling for more gun control. Their hypocrisy was juxtaposed on all the gun violence they have done in their movies.

More recent (basically the 1st 4 min)..
