New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) on Thursday predicted the 2024 election won’t be contested by either President Joe Biden or former President Donald Trump.
...
Trump is “very, very beatable” in the GOP primary and there is a “huge opportunity” for one of his rivals to break through, explained Sununu.
...
On Biden, Sununu predicted the president will go “through the primary process” and “collect all the delegates” before “a wild convention where he and his people start steering the delegates somewhere else.”
I agree.

I think it’s as likely Biden won’t be the nominee as Trump.

Donald Trump and rival Ron DeSantis will appear for the first time at the same campaign event in early voting Iowa on Friday at a pivotal moment for the Republican presidential candidates.
...
Trump has typically avoided attending events that put him in the lineup with the rest of the crowded field and has questioned why he should share the stage with his trailing rivals.

But with Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucuses less than six months away, Trump and a dozen other GOP hopefuls are taking advantage of the chance to speak to about 1,200 GOP members and activists at Friday’s Lincoln Day Dinner.
If I remember how the Lincoln Day Dinner works, it isn't a debate, candidates address the audience separately. My guess is that trump agreed to attend if he got to speak when he wanted (first or last).
No way Trump would further expose himself in a real debate. If he does that Chris Christie will be the next President due to a huge crossover vote

Kamala Harris vs Tim Scott would be interesting, and probably reduce this site's membership by several cardiac arrests.

I think Christie has the best chance to unseat Trump of the conks and I don't see how the donks could steer Biden's delegates anywhere but to Harris without risking another Bernie situation on the turnout

IMO Christie is acting as an attack dog. Weakening trump to make him vulnerable to another candidate like Scott.

Trump got a standing ovation.

Conversely Hurd, who came with an attack Trump speech, got booed off the stage.

I see what you mean tactically but I don't think Christie is acting; I do think that he is the contender that best understands the politics of the situation - if you're running as "I'm Trump too!", you're running for VP at best, with a guy that sicced a mob on his last VP. Christie understands that you have to take it from the champ and he's baiting Trump at every opportunity, calling him vindictive and a petulant child, clueless, a loser...the kind of shit that Trump would pounce upon on Twitter if it came from the cashier at a McDonald's but he's ducking Christie because he knows what happens if he tries to debate with him. My fear is that Christie will pull it off and I'll have to vote for his fat ass.

Hurd is one of about six Republicans with a clue, especially about the border, and I think he'd do well speaking to to a general election audience. Christie/Hurd would attract a lot of indepedents.

Ron DeSantis' newest problem: The majority of likely Republican primary voters don't want a candidate devoted to fighting 'woke'
According to a New York Times poll, which was conducted between July 23-27, 52 percent of Republicans who will likely vote in the GOP primary election said they'd support a candidate who thinks the "government should stay out of deciding what corporations can support" over one promising "to fight corporations that promote 'woke' left ideology."
...
If DeSantis and his team don't change their focus, he risks becoming part of the next iteration of presidential candidates like Sen. Marco Rubio who quickly got stuck repeating the same talking point again, and again, and again.

Nope, William H Christie doesn’t have a chance, and it has nothing to do with politics. America will elect an overweight, borderline fat POTUS (see Trump). They won’t elect a morbidly obese one in the TV era. Christie would take the title from Taft.

If trump wins the Republican nomination and the general election, what are the odds that he ignores the 22nd Amendment and refuses to leave office in January 2029?

Well he knew he’d lost in 2020 and would learn from the mistakes last time and would seek further control over the military, courts, and state legislatures so the odds would be high I’d reckon.

trump is obese but not morbidly obese.

I'd guess that trump is 6'2" tall and 250+ lbs. At 6'2", he'd need to weigh 310 to be morbidly obese (and 300 at 6'1").

Christie is like 5'11" and 300 so he is morbidly obese.

trump is definitely morbid in other ways

He has none of those things now, and he won't have control over them, even in the face of an unlikely election in 2024, in 2029. Again, democracy wasn't on the precipice in 2021 nor would it be in 2029. People vastly underestimate the patriotism of the military, the integrity (or at least the balance) of the federal courts, and the breadth in what are 50 independent state legislatures. At the end of the day, Trump is still a person, a deeply unprincipled and despicable person, but he's not some modern day Julius Ceasar. As bad as 1/6 was, it was maybe a couple of hundred, unarmed and pretty dim people. He's not getting more people out in 2029 to keep him in office against the current Constitution. We should recognize that our country is far more strong at its foundation than what some people try to make it out to be.
