Luis Gonzales retires a Diamondback
Luis Gonzales, the best offensive player in Dback history, and Yankee slayer, retired today officially, and will take a front office job.
Gonzo retires #15 on the All-time doubles list. 5-time All-star.
HOF worthy?

Re: Luis Gonzales retires a Diamondback
They should have signed him in July (once they knew the season was toast) to let him get 4 more doubles. Only 4 players with 600 doubles, and Gonzo ended his career with 596.
And the answer to HOF is not only NO, but hell no. He won't get a sniff....

Re: Luis Gonzales retires a Diamondback
Actually, there are 14 players with 600+ doubles.
And his numbers over his 18 year career suggest he will probably not make it, but is borderline. There have been less worthy candidates in.
Of course, he should get in for slaying the Yankees...

Interesting...I was going off of what was written in Bickley's column today....figures that idiot was wrong.
And any "less worthy" candidates played in a different era.

Black Ink Batting - 5 (396), Average HOFer ≈ 27
Gray Ink Batting - 57 (433), Average HOFer ≈ 144
Hall of Fame Monitor Batting - 101 (147), Likely HOFer ≈ 100
Hall of Fame Standards Batting - 47 (89), Average HOFer ≈ 50
nope - not hofer
Bill James slides him in - but the sportswriters a dinks and i know NO Yankee scribe will throw him a vote - and since he's tied to the steroid era, and it appears the writers are collectively a bunch of self-righteous assclowns... he's not going in...
i think he's a borderline guy, like Jack Morris, who belong in the hall for significant pro careers combined with an EPIC moment in the history of the game (Mazeroski has already gotten this consideration)

Fair statement. And since it is the Hall of Fame. Famous moment should way heavily. His hit was as big of a moment as any in baseball history.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:Black Ink Batting - 5 (396), Average HOFer ≈ 27

How true. That hit announced the arrival of the pinnacle of the steroid era in baseball.dbackjon wrote: His hit was as big of a moment as any in baseball history.
It is entirely appropriate that Gonzalez retires as a D-Back. Cements forever the taint and shame between the team and the player.

Are you implying he couldn't have muscled that ball over Jeter's head without steroids?JoltinJoe wrote:How true. That hit announced the arrival of the pinnacle of the steroid era in baseball.dbackjon wrote: His hit was as big of a moment as any in baseball history.

Impossible to answer. If he had not taken steroids, the DBacks would not have been playing that post-season.AZGrizFan wrote:Are you implying he couldn't have muscled that ball over Jeter's head without steroids?JoltinJoe wrote:

And the same could be said for every team since about 1995. Including your precious Yankmees.JoltinJoe wrote:Impossible to answer. If he had not taken steroids, the DBacks would not have been playing that post-season.AZGrizFan wrote:

It's sad Twins fans and DBack fans don't know what it is like to have rooted for a clean champion.

Re: Luis Gonzales retires a Diamondback
I've given this some serious thought, looked at the numbers, and I just don't see Gonzalez making the cut at the Hall of Fame.
But sometimes the Hall of Fame honors quality player with a significant, defining moment with some form of special exhibit, and Gonzalez probably deserves that.
Ideas anyone? Maybe they can display a collection of his used needles.
