Stop the childish bullying

This newspaper traces its roots to before Las Vegas was Las Vegas.

We've seen cattle ranches give way to railroads. We chronicled the construction of Hoover Dam. We reported on the first day of legalized gambling. The first hospital. The first school. The first church. We survived the mob, Howard Hughes, the Great Depression, several recessions, two world wars, dozens of news competitors and any number of two-bit politicians who couldn't stand scrutiny, much less criticism.

We're still here doing what we do for the people of Las Vegas and Nevada. So, let me assure you, if we weathered all of that, we can damn sure outlast the bully threats of Sen. Harry Reid.

On Wednesday, before he addressed a Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Reid joined the chamber's board members for a meet-'n'-greet and a photo. One of the last in line was the Review-Journal's director of advertising, Bob Brown, a hard-working Nevadan who toils every day on behalf of advertisers. He has nothing to do with news coverage or the opinion pages of the Review-Journal.

Yet, as Bob shook hands with our senior U.S. senator in what should have been nothing but a gracious business setting, Reid said: "I hope you go out of business."

Later, in his public speech, Reid said he wanted to let everyone know that he wants the Review-Journal to continue selling advertising because the Las Vegas Sun is delivered inside the Review-Journal.

Such behavior cannot go unchallenged.

You could call Reid's remark ugly and be right. It certainly was boorish. Asinine? That goes without saying.

But to fully capture the magnitude of Reid's remark (and to stop him from doing the same thing to others) it must be called what it was -- a full-on threat perpetrated by a bully who has forgotten that he was elected to office to protect Nevadans, not sound like he's shaking them down.

No citizen should expect this kind of behavior from a U.S. senator. It is certainly not becoming of a man who is the majority leader in the U.S. Senate. And it absolutely is not what anyone would expect from a man who now asks Nevadans to send him back to the Senate for a fifth term.

One of the problems is that too many people think that their congressperson is one of the good ones and want to get rid of all of the others. Might be easier to start over.

On the flip side, the loss of knowledge and experience would make the bureaucrats and congressional staffers that much more influential.

As a former bureaucrat myself I don't think it makes much difference. The healthcare bill is a perfect example. How many of our elected officials have actually read it? How many elected officials read any bill? They rely on their staffers to tell them what is in there and trust that their staffers are honest.

I'm willing to try it because what we have now sure as hell isn't working.

My Congressman is one of the bad ones and I will spare no effort to bring him back to the 2nd district of Virginia where we can keep a close eye on him and prevent him from doing any additional damage.

Here's the funny thing about Congress - it, more than any institution in our country is rooted in the notion of "self-exceptionalism"... at it's essence, the belief that "everyone is stupid but me" or "i'm above average" it applies to peoples elected officials for the most part too... "congress sucks, but mine's one of the good ones" and this attitude applies regardless of party, across the country.

hell, Tom Delay's constituents believed it about him to the bitter end... same with Dan Rostenkowski, Newt Gingrich, Duke Cunningham, Gary Condit... etc.

point being, and how it relates to this... the R-J knows one thing - nothing sells papers like a controversy. so, let's whip up one with ol Give 'em hell harry... here's the kick - it won't change a damn thing.

Given that I was there for that fight - let me explain the difference: in 2004 the Bush White House and national GOP poured millions in to SD - Rove wanted Daschle's head on a pike - and was going to go to any length to get it. they spent millions, in a state where tv and radio are criminally cheap - to block out the airwaves to attack Daschle - these ads ran starting in the summer of 03 (something almost NEVER done - before or since) - they then sent top operatives to the state, recruited congressman Thune, with some big promises to move from the states only house seat to challenge Daschle.

Even with all of that - and the year being 2004 - a very good year for the GOP (they still weren't near universally loathed by Americans - that didn't happen til 06) Daschle still held a lead... until Rove played the trump card - they, in no uncertain terms, threatened the people of South Dakota, that if Daschle was re-elected they would close Ellsworth Air Force base and leave Sioux Falls with nothing but the tourists for it's economy... the threat, combined with everything else, including a turnout operation usually reserved for Ohio, resulted in Daschle losing by 4,000 votes...

i wouldn't put much stock in the idea that the GOP will be able to create that kind of heat again...
