American 13-year-olds are scoring their lowest in math and reading in decades
6/30/2023
Per ABC

The 13-year-olds of America are scoring the lowest in decades on math and reading scores. This came from the nation's report card federal test results.

Specifically, math scores dropped by their largest margin ever recorded. The article reported that this was also due to the pandemic learning setbacks.

Mathnasium Sherman Oacks' Barry Weiss gave a statement regarding the alarming news.

In 1850, unwashed kids aged 6 to 18 were crammed into a smelly one-room school house with no AC and no technology- and often no books- yet still emerged well-versed in Latin, French, humanities and trigonometry.

Today, with whiteboards, laptops, separate rooms for each grade, and teacher/student ratios historically unheard of, student comprehension levels are falling instead of rising. Last year, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, math and reading scores for 13 year-olds hit their lowest scores in decades, which isn’t explained by the Covid-19 gap of recent years.

The explanation may be found in a growing reliance on smart phones, social media and electronic devices that offer addictive and excessive visual and audio stimulation, dulling the brain’s ability to think critically and organically.

Observational studies in human learning have shown a direct link between a child’s exposure to fast-paced television in the first 3 years of life and his subsequent attentional deficits as he gets older. Excessive sensory stimulation (ESS) during childhood has been shown to increase cognitive and behavioral deficits overall. Even rising levels of ADHD among older children and college students are correlated with subjects’ early exposure to excessive electronic media.

Education levels are affecting U.S. politics

America’s growing political divide may have more to do with education and cognition levels than policy differences. By wide margins, the mostly highly educated Congressional districts in the U.S. elect Democrats, while the least educated districts elect Republicans.

According to data compiled by Politico, Democrats control 77% of the most highly educated Congressional districts, while Republicans control 64% of the least educated districts. The rural poor love Trump even though Democrats deliver kitchen table results that benefit them most: jobs, infrastructure, broadband, healthcare, and industry regulations so trains don’t derail and parts don’t fly off aircraft at 16,000 feet.
More long walks in parks sounds lovely. Meditation shoukd be taught in schools. Expand recreational activities and low level competition kids sports.
It’s been reported that 100 million people are exposed to dangerous environmental noise due to traffic, personal listening devices and other sources. Noise pollution has emerged as a risk factor for depression, cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative disorders of the central nervous system leading to emotional stress, anxiety, cognitive and memory defects.

It seems the entire nation could use a long walk in the woods, or an extended visit to one of our 429 national parks — sans devices.

You're arguing that education is bad? That's :dunce:

What about conservative indoctrination? Banning books, putting the 10 Commandments in schools, trying to tell LGBTQ+ people that they're freaks, etc.

The far right and the far left are so alike that it's astounding and neither is able to admit it.

Odd UK is trending left when much of rest of Europe is trending right.
The champagne was on ice at the far-right National Rally's (RN) headquarters, but the celebratory mood swiftly turned to disbelief when the first projected results from Sunday's parliamentary election appeared on TV screens.

For days, Marine Le Pen had confidently predicted that her party would triumph with an outright majority and her protege Jordan Bardella would be prime minister. Instead, the National Rally was on course to come third, behind a left-wing alliance and President Emmanuel Macron's centrist bloc.
https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/bu ... 024-07-07/
Meh, the National Rally got the most number of seats they’ve ever had by far (142, in 2022 was 89), and they were only prevented from a majority by having 200ish center and left candidates drop out of multiple candidate races. Is no majority for 1st time in French history, and the left’s coalition is a fragile one. No one knows how this will end up playing out.

I’m not the poster who first called trump supporters yahoos. If you don’t like the moniker you should take it up with that poster - BDK.

I’m not looking for a fight, I’m trying to get through that thick skull of yours and help you realize that MAQA and Woke are alike. It’s fair to question the critical thinking skills of anyone who can’t see that.

I don't think they were a shoe-in, nor was it being displayed that way. Once it became clear that the center left and far left were coordinating to strategically run or not run candidates it all got very tight - you're right, up to that it was certainly going to be a far-right victory, but that political maneuver put a wrench into that. BDK is right, though, France still needs to come to grips that the far right in that country is gaining significantly at the voting booths, and this mish-mash coalition that will try to rule isn't bound to last long. France hasn't settled anything and will continue to deal with this push and pull for years and elections to come.

Lots of discussion on the trump shooting thread about the director of the Secret Service being a DEI hire so I'm curious ...

How does an alleged DEI hire (Kimberly Cheatle, kamala harris, etc.) compare to an alleged nepo hire (lara trump, ivanka trump, jared kushner, etc.)?

Cheatle doesn't stack up against any of them. She's incompetent never should have been hired and she's what's wrong with government. It needs to be rinsed at all levels. Fire them all and replace.

Whites are an ethnic minority in DC. All of these were DEI hires.

Shit hole states and the direction we’d be heading nationally with Republican success.

Shocker.
CNBC released its ‘America’s Top States for Business’ report, which considers quality of life in its ranking.

The states with the poorest quality of life in 2024 are Texas, Indiana and Alabama, according to the report.

Texas’ anti-LGBTQ legislation, restrictive abortion policy and poor healthcare are all reasons it has the worst quality of life, according to the ranking.

Texas is the state with the worst quality of life, according to data from CNBC’s America’s Top States for Business report.
As part of the study, CNBC considers states’ quality of life as one of their 10 categories of competitiveness used to rank states.

CNBC uses multiple factors like crime rates, health care, air quality and child care when determining quality of life of each state.

Texas came in as the state with the worst quality of life, in part, due to its poor healthcare.

GOP Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine opposes fall ballot effort to replace troubled political mapmaking system
At a news conference complete with corroborating visuals, DeWine contended that rules laid out in the Citizens Not Politicians amendment would divide communities and mandate outcomes that fit “the classic definition of gerrymandering.” He took specific aim at the proposal's requirement for partisan proportionality in the maps.

“Now, the idea of proportionality sounds fair," he said. "However, we see that requiring the map drawer to draw districts, each of which favors one political party, with each district having a predetermined partisan advantage, and requiring a certain number of districts to favor each party, obliterates all other good government objectives. They all go away.”

DeWine said Iowa's system — in which mapmakers are prohibited from consulting past election results or protecting individual lawmakers — would remove politics from the process.

Supporters of Ohio's fall ballot measure disagreed, pointing out that Iowa state lawmakers have the final say on political district maps in that state — the exact scenario the Ohio plan is designed to avoid. That’s after Ohio’s existing system, involving the state Legislature and a state redistricting commission populated with elected officials, including DeWine, produced seven rounds of legislative and congressional maps rejected by courts as unconstitutional.
I agree with DeWine that proportionality will cause problems. The Iowa system but without giving state lawmakers the final say is better long-term approach.

MAQA yahoos have been claiming that only the left engages in political violence. They're either delusional or have their heads stuck in the sand ...
Judges and prosecutors are facing repeated threats of violence as they handle cases related to Trump, interviews and documents reveal. The wave of intimidation follows the ex-president’s attacks on judges as corrupt and biased – and some worry it threatens America’s long tradition of judicial independence.

U.S.District Judge Royce Lamberth has been threatened by angry criminals. Drug cartels. Even al Qaeda.

But nothing, Lamberth says, prepared him for the wave of harassment after he began hearing cases against supporters of former President Donald Trump who attacked the U.S. Capitol in a bid to overturn the 2020 election.
Judges in Trump-related cases face unprecedented wave of threats
Michael Shapiro ... left five voicemail messages at Swalwell’s office D.C. office. ... In one of the messages left for Swalwell, Shapiro stated that he was going to “come after you and kill you,” according to a criminal complaint and affidavit by the U.S. Capitol Police. In another message, he stated that he was going to “come and kill your children.”
Florida man threatened to kill Democratic congressman. Now, he’s in prison for two years
"I think my rhetoric brings people together," he said last year, four days after a 21-year-old allegedly posted an anti-immigrant screed online and then allegedly opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, killing 22 and injuring dozens of others.
...
Reviewing police reports and court records, ABC News found that in at least 12 cases perpetrators hailed Trump in the midst or immediate aftermath of physically assaulting innocent victims. In another 18 cases, perpetrators cheered or defended Trump while taunting or threatening others. And in another 10 cases, Trump and his rhetoric were cited in court to explain a defendant's violent or threatening behavior.
'No Blame?' ABC News finds 54 cases invoking 'Trump' in connection with violence, threats, alleged assaults.

Rather than condemning threats of violence against prosecutors, judges, witnesses, court staff, etc. they dismiss/justify them because they "were only against those who are taking part in that lawfare against him" or argue that they're "apples to oranges" in comparison to threats against trump.

It's really simple, if liberals are responsible for the impact that their words and actions have then trump should be as well. Anything else is dishonest and hypocritical.

WTF? :suspicious: Charge the SS agents with B/E and fire them.
Secret Service apologizes after breaking into Massachusetts salon to use bathroom before Harris fundraiser

…..The salon owner, Alicia Powers, says Secret Service agents put duct tape over her security cameras and broke into her building by picking the lock. They then allowed various people to use the salon's bathroom over a two-hour period…

……. Footage from the salon's front-door Ring security camera shows a Secret Service agent approaching the door with a roll of tape and observing the locked door and the camera. The agent then grabbed a nearby chair and stood on it to tape over the security camera.

"There were several people in and out for about an hour-and-a-half – just using my bathroom, the alarms going off, using my counter, with no permission," Powers told BI…
