Then we've been a weak country for hundreds of years. Immigrants have been coming to this country and speaking their native languages (German, Irish, etc).

Yeah, at home.

At schools is different. The kids need to be immersed in English. My gf came to the US when she was 8 (legally) not speaking a lick of English. Got thrown into a 3rd grade class where no one spoke German, and was forced to learn REAL fast. Sink or swim.

The Irish speak English.

Outside of specified high school foreign language classes, should be one language taught in schools-English.

In the mid 1800's, probably about 1/2 the Irish spoke English.

That's your opinion. My opinion is that there is nothing wrong with educating young children in the language they speak best especially in areas where they are a majority. The goal should be to transition them to English language classrooms before they leave elementary school. From my experience as someone who has actually taught in ESL classrooms, it is. It's no different then the children of Germans going to school with other German kids and learning in German.

Need a 'free dad hug' or 'free mom hug'? These parents are giving them out at Pride.
“The first girl I offered a hug to said it's been four years since she had a hug from her mother because she's a lesbian,” Cunningham says. That ignited a spark in her to do more, leading her to found the nonprofit Free Mom Hugs. What started as just a few moms in Oklahoma City has turned into a national movement with more than 40,000 registered volunteers.
...
That support is making a difference. Last year, his dads group got a booth at the entrance of the Pride festival. “So you could not walk in without walking past us,” he says. “We weren't pushy about it, but we wanted to make sure that everyone understood that we're here to give a hug.” And given their location, they gave a lot of them. A police officer stationed at the event came up to the group later on and said, “I don't know if you really fully understand [the impact] because when people are walking away from you guys and walking toward us, they are just bawling. I'm touched by the impact this is making.” Leacy adds: “That was a big deal for us.”
Kudos to these women and men for making a difference!

Immerse them in English. They already know their native language, and will continue to speak it in school to their friends, and out of school, esp in areas where they are a majority. That’s why in areas they are the majority it’s even more important for English only in school. The sooner they are immersed in English the better.

Plus the ESL costs more $$$ taking away resources from other areas. NYC is spending a ton of $$$$ trying to teach 180 languages.
The goal should be to transition them to English language classrooms before they leave elementary school
Of course. Tell that to all the middle and high schools with lots of ESL staff.

I can agree with this. The goal has to be getting these kids to learn and speak English as soon as possible. It's only in their best interests to do so. Much of elementary school, while nice, isn't that academically rigorous anyway, it's a great opportunity to get the English up to speed and ready for the more challenging work in middle and high school. If they still aren't speaking and learning in English by then, we're not doing it right.

It already is the goal. Progress depends mostly on the age that they start and the education they had in their home country. If you're a teenager from Honduras you have none to little formal education and a long hard road ahead. The opposite end of the spectrum would be a kid under 10 from further south. Most Colombian kids have a pretty good formal education so they tend to pick it up a bit faster and Brazilian kids often become tri-lingual.

That is the goal in the schools that I've taught in. ESL ended in 4th grade.

More importantly, MAQA yahoos believe that education should be the states' responsibility and I agree with them. Whether to utilize ESL classes should be decided by the states not the federal government.

If trump and MAQA yahoos are going to gut the DoE, then the portion of the budget used to fund education shouldn't be used to justify a tax break but returned to the states so that they can fund public education as they see fit.

Signs to police 'negative' history went up at Manzanar. Historians are nervous.
On the orders of the Donald Trump administration, National Park Service employees hung two highly controversial signs this week at Manzanar National Historic Site, a museum examining the property’s former role as a prison where the U.S. government incarcerated more than 10,000 Japanese Americans during World War II.

Displayed on a site where American citizens were held against their will for more than three years, the signs encourage visitors to report any depictions of U.S. history that “inappropriately disparage Americans past or living” or fail to highlight the “beauty, abundance or grandeur” of the landscape, according to a Manzanar official.

Identical signs are now posted at every national park site across the nation, regardless of whether that site’s purpose is to educate the public about horrifying mistakes and grave injustices perpetrated by the U.S. government.
...
Wallace emphasized that the documentation of these histories is not speculative or disputed accounts.

“These histories are well documented at this point,” she said. “There are thousands of government documents, oral histories, photographs, letters … there’s so much material showing that, no, this really happened.”
Image

Teaching our actual history is more important than whether the park(s) include depictions “disparage Americans past or living”. Americans have done things that deserve disparagement. The best way to prevent us from doing them again is to be honest about and teach the past. Poor Todd and Karen MAGA's feelings are less important than teaching the truth and trying to prevent future oppression and atrocities.

Can you imagine the AFD winning a German election and requiring similar signs at Dachau?

Her Medal of Honor was once revoked. Now her base is being renamed

Marra said she suspected the recent renaming would prompt another petition.

“I just find it sad and wasteful, how much work and thought was put in by the base naming commission,” she said. “But I have hope that eventually, when things in America change, that we will have the opportunity to have a base named for her again.”

“What the story should be is what she has done for our nation, not her gender,” Marra said. “That said, it really, really hurt, and I was very disappointed earlier this year when I saw web pages dedicated to her in our federal government taken down. Seeing those 404 codes, that was disappointing. And that seems silly to be erasing the digital footprint of someone who has been held in such high regard until now.”

Therriault plans to take a page from Walker’s own playbook and resist the renaming on his own terms.

“They can change signs and they can do what they want, and they will,” he said, “but it’s still Fort Walker to me.”
The rerenaming of these bases is temporary. At some point the Confederate names will be permanently changed.
