If it’s a casual round…which thus could have been, improving your lie is acceptable but most still don’t. You’re only cheating yourself in this instance.

One of the original rules of golf (established in 1744 by the Gentlemen Golfers of Leith) is to play the ball as you found it. Part of golf is good fortune and bad bounces. Who knows… had he played the ball as it was found maybe the next shot from there gets a lucky bounce and goes in the hole.

The phrase “cheats at golf, cheats at life” is a shared belief among pros. It obviously has more to do than just your score or the game. Even during a recreational round.
