Loudest stadium, Montana??
In a letter thanking the ODU fans for being the 12th man Coach Bobby Wilder stated the following:
"I have coached in stadiums all over the country in my career. Penn State, Ohio State, Tennessee, and Nebraska to name a few. All of these facilities held 80,000 to 100,000 people. None of these stadiums were as loud as the only FCS school in the country to sell more season tickets then Old Dominion, the University of Montana.
What made Montana different was the fans were at their loudest when their opponent was on offense. They knew they could eliminate the offensive check system with noise. They were the 12th defender on the field by making the offense predictable. And they took great pleasure in every penalty the visiting team received. They knew that was their penalty."

Re: Loudest stadium, Montana??
As I said in another post on here about the letter. That is the overriding opinion of a ton of coaches that have been here for playoff games and so forth. There is almost always something mentioned about the crowd noise being louder than any of the big stadiums they've played in. In 2004 ESPN had a decibel meter at the UNH/MT playoff game and were measuring the decibels and I can't remember the exact # but it was somewhere around the level of a rock concert or a jet taking off. I do remember that it was in the "threshold of pain." We do appreciate your coach's mention and he has made a lot of fans in Griz Nation it would appear because after seeing that blurb on here a couple of days ago I have been receiving it via email from some other Griz fans here in Missoula.

I don't know....maybe their tailgate's are louder, but some of the night playoff games in Boone were just as loud if not louder than WaGriz...but that's from one game against UC Davis...I imagine the decibel level is higher for Bobkitties & playoffs....

Yeah, the UC Davis game was pretty tame. The last few weeks of the season are a lot louder than the first few usually.Appaholic wrote:I don't know....maybe their tailgate's are louder, but some of the night playoff games in Boone were just as loud if not louder than WaGriz...but that's from one game against UC Davis...I imagine the decibel level is higher for Bobkitties & playoffs....

Sure wish I'd have known ya when you were here DF, we'd have had one hell of a good time that weekend. I mean, unless you're talking about being here as a player and not a fan.danefan wrote:Loudest stadium I've ever been in. That's for sure.

I was there when I played, but my father and brother came out to watch. They would have enjoyed a good tailgate for sure.Ursus A. The fans were great to us players too though. After the game some of the fans gave me a UM canister with items to bring back to Ground Zero. I gave it to my offensive line coach, who brought it down to the site. His brother was killed in 9/11 and he really appreciated the thought. The game was Sept. 2002. Really nice people.
The hemp festival was also the same weekend.

I could tell by the tailgate....think a couple of different tailgates shared the same 8-pak of Zima......Ursus A. Horribilis wrote:Yeah, the UC Davis game was pretty tame. Go ahead everyone, keep kissing ODU's a$$, pretty soon, they'll get bold and say they are louder. And you'll have no one to blame but yourselves.

That's right, it was that homeless guy. BTW, Grizo did go to the NC game primarily to make up for that since I told him that we would be meeting up with you and Bench. Thank god Catamount showed up and saved the saved the SoCon from total disgrace.Appaholic wrote:YOU KNOW THAT"S NOT TRUE! Grizo is one of the best tranny's you will ever meet Appa. He has this hot little schoolgirl skirt that he wears.

Well, if he ever comes to Boone to watch App St play, I'll be sure to make time for him......but only if he's wearing the schoolgirl outfit.....with pigtails or pistol-grip earrings......Ursus A. Re: Loudest stadium, Montana??
App State and Montana generally have a numbers (crowd size) advantage, for sure.
But UNI has an architectural advantage with their Dome, especially since they put the metal roof on, which holds the crowd noise in and reflects it down onto the field.
It can get really loud in there with a packed house and a fired-up crowd (just ask SIU).
Though sometimes on regular games, it seems to me that much of the crowd has trouble getting fired up. Which sucks.
I'm not sure how the max noise levels compare between those three though.

Re: Loudest stadium, Montana??
I'd like to see decibel readings for both and compare. UNI has an advantage being indoors, but I still bet WaGriz is louder. I've been in the FargoDome for the NDSU-SDSU game and it didn't even compare to Missoula (sorry NDSU).JayJ79 wrote:App State and Montana generally have a numbers (crowd size) advantage, for sure.

Re: Loudest stadium, Montana??
Wouldn't it be great when ODU finally makes the playoffs for the first time in 2034 and they get sent to Montana only to get their asses handed to them? Guarantee those Grizz won't show the Butterflies any love in the playoffs...
Re: Loudest stadium, Montana??
I have been to several athletic contests involving Towson, and by far the loudest thing I ever heard were the desperate screams of teenage girls begging for Gary Neal to stay away from them.andy7171 wrote:Go ahead everyone, keep kissing ODU's a$$, pretty soon, they'll get bold and say they are louder. Re: Loudest stadium, Montana??
You don't have to say sorry, SDSU's coach Stig said that Montana was the loudest stadium he has been to and NDSU is second(that includes Iowa State and UNI).Willie wrote:I'd like to see decibel readings for both and compare. UNI would probably be really loud if they had endzone seating, but they don't. They were loud at times during the NDSU game but I wasn't all that impressed with the Panther fanbase that game. No offense to UNI but I thought they would have had a bigger crowd there.

Re: Loudest stadium, Montana??
I've been told that UNI has hit about 130-140 on the decibel scale. That would put in in this range
Sandblasting, Loud Rock Concert 115dB
Pain begins 125dB
Pneumatic riveter at 4' 125dB
Even short term exposure can cause permanent damage - Loudest recommended exposure WITH hearing protection 140dB
Jet engine at 100', Gun Blast 140dB
However, like Jay said, it helps we have a metal roof and that for some reason are fans don't give a damn for most of the game.

Re: Loudest stadium, Montana??
loudest i've ever heard a stadium of any kind was the metrodome in 1987, for the final regular season game... Gaetti and Puckett went back to back in the first and then Hrbek crushed a two run homer a and the Twins were up 5-0 and were on their way to clinching a division title for the first time in 19 years... I was pretty little, but I remember my ears hurting, and my mom was worried and asked if I wanted to go - I apparently said "no way! this is great!"
