mudpuppy, nobody in Wyoming ever has influence on presidential elections because of the electoral vote, and besides this state carried McCain at the highest percentage of all states last fall. I would venture to guess you are much like them sans the part about being "well meaning."

Having hundreds of potential victims cower in the back of an airliner because a couple greasy thugs with box cutters are telling them to do so is plain dumb.

Personal responsibility. Waiting for the police to save you is certain tragedy, and yes we have been raised to be dependent, passive, and wimpy. This is what the hijackers counted on to make their plan work, it is up to all of us to refuse to become victims, especially when being threatened by a few. The folks who perished in the Pennsylvania crash have set an example for all, either die fighting or survive. To just roll over and surrender is so un-American.

Prior to 9/11, most hijackers wanted to fly to some other destination and negotiate for something. Cowering in the back of the plane was the advisable thing to do. 9/11 changed that. Potential hijackers are going to need more than box cutters to take a plane that I'm flying on.

Locks on cockpit doors may be a good way to prevent the specific type of attack that took place 8 years ago, but I don't think you can argue that locks on cockpit doors were the only thing needed to prevent all possible attacks. It's not that easy.

I don't disagree that we overreacted, but you're talking as if everything other than locks on the cock pit doors was excessive, and that is definitely not the case.

Locks on the doors would have done nothing and continue to do nothing to prevent what we saw 8 years ago. A person hell bent on taking over a plane will have to nothing more than start killing hostages until he had access to the cockpit. A few innocents die and a pilot will open the door to prevent the next from dying. No pilot wants that blood on his/her hands. The pilots would expect that the plane would be diverted to a place they could land and negotiate for the release of the hostages in exchange for political prisoners.

Let that senerio play out and now what? The terrorists have control of the plane and everyone is still going to die. Door locks have done nothing and continue to execute that worthless roll.
