GannonFan wrote: Thu Mar 12, 2026 10:44 am I don't get the defending of issues with voting. If we have one case of illegal votes then there are too many. This is easily solvable, most other countries do it - voter ID, in person voting, and preferably a limited timeframe of voting. If the SAVE act doesn't work, do the work in Congress to correct it and pass something that gets us there. People will continue to complain about stolen elections and voter fraud as long as do nothing to address clear issues that do exist. Why would we keep allowing this issue to be talked about if there's an actual solution to this? Fix the issue, pass a bill that does that and that addresses the concerns with it, and we're there.
People, especially trump and MAQA, will complain about stolen elections and voter fraud when they lose regardless of what protections are in place. That's what they do.

I have no problem with requiring IDs or proof citizenship. I have a problem with MAQA rushing to do it. It's similar to how the DoJ and Smith prosecuted trump - they sat on their hands and then tried to rush it. If we're going to do it then lets take the time to do it right, make getting the identification and documents required to vote free, and cover the costs that will be incurred by the states to do do this (no more unfunded mandates).

One case of illegal/fraudulent voting is too many but it doesn't justify the rush to implement something that will likely temporarily disenfranchise people.

Mail-in voting works well in Oregon. Why force states to require in-person voting?

If we're going to spend money on this antiquated and soon to be outdated solution, why not spend it on electronic voting?
Rushing. :suspicious: The right has been pushing for this for decades..

Then why is the SAVE Act such a cluster fvck that it likely won't survive legal challenges enough to be implemented for 2026?

Watch This GOP Senator Learn in Real Time Why the SAVE Act Is Bad

“Fifty percent of Americans do not have a passport. Those who want to obtain it so they can vote will pay $186 and wait three or four weeks for that to happen,” Durbin said. “Secondly, you can use a birth certificate, but any person who has changed their name as a result of a marriage … has to find not only their birth certificate but some correction of it to prove that they are eligible to register to vote.

“It’s estimated that 9 percent of the voters in America do not have the identification required by this bill. It means that, ultimately, those people will not be voting. And I think that is the ultimate goal of this administration,” Durbin continued. This was news to Cornyn, who asked if these concerns could be addressed by the amendment process. Durbin responded, “When’s the last time we amended a bill?”

Durbin is correctly pointing out that the SAVE Act seems designed to make it harder to vote—particularly for lower-income Americans and married women who change their names—rather than to tackle voter fraud, which is practically nonexistent anyway.

I have neither my passport or Birth Certificate. I did just see where Canada is relaxing its citizenship requirements. My mom was a duel citizen so I qualified before but now my sons do as well. One has already started looking into it.

I speak Canadian fluently so I’d be right at home.

SAVE Act:
Passport
Birth Certificate (plus supporting documents if your name has changed). And pending SCOTUS ruling on birthright citizenship

Example from the real world

All forms of fake ID are available to illegals and anyone else

A Dominican national departs the Dominican Republic in a wooden boat, known as a yola, to transit the Mona Pass on a dangerous overnight voyage to Puerto Rico. They have no intentions of checking in with customs on arrival therefore these voyages are illegal, but very profitable for the criminal elements both in the Dominican Republic and in Puerto Rico.

Over the decades, it wasn’t just Dominicans in these yolas anymore, It was people from all over the world using the Dominican Republic as a staging ground. These operations are also facilitated by the corrupt Dominican Navy.

These voyages are organized by criminal organizations and the Yola‘s can be extremely overloaded, sometimes carrying upwards of 100 people. Some of them are lost at sea and never heard from again, but they will take the risk because they consider the lure of free stuff like SNAP cards and other Democrat candy they can get in the United States is well worth the risk. Democrats don’t care about these people risking it all because they will vote for them if they can make it across

When these overloaded Yola’s full of illegals make it to the beach in Puerto Rico, they will be picked up by the criminal network and held in safe houses. Their contacts and families have already paid and organized for their fake drivers license and Puerto Rican birth certificates and whatever other form of fake ID they might want or need or be able to pay for.

Once they have all the ID, including fake passports, they can freely travel to the United States and set up residency if they so choose.

I don’t know how many of these people are actually voting, but I can tell you it’s a heck of a lot more than you might realize and voting for Democrats because you think they are the nice guys is about the most stupid idea that anyone could hold

I have neither my passport or Birth Certificate. I did just see where Canada is relaxing its citizenship requirements. My mom was a duel citizen so I qualified before but now my sons do as well. One has already started looking into it.

I speak Canadian fluently so I’d be right at home.
Of course you are :coffee:

“After President Donald Trump warned recently about Iranian "sleeper cells" potentially operating in North America, Canadian opposition lawmakers are accusing their government of allowing operatives linked to Tehran’s regime to remain in the country”
No governments are trustworthy but Canada is far more trustworthy than the Epstein Administration.

Some Republicans warn Trump's SAVE America Act is doomed to fail as Senate tees up a vote
The first idea is the “talking filibuster” under current rules, which Lee, R-Utah, has called for. Proponents can’t point to any example of this tactic working unless at least 60 senators vote to cut off debate and allow for final passage, which Democrats have made clear they won’t do.

And attempting it could lead to days or weeks of debate, going through the night, where the minority Democrats would have a huge advantage: They just need one senator to hold the floor to give speeches of infinite length, and can rotate between their 47 members. Republicans, however, would need 51 of their 53 senators to be on or near the floor at all times, and all hours or the day, for a “quorum.” Otherwise, one Democrat could just adjourn the Senate and end the “talking filibuster.”

“It’s a waste of time,” Tillis told NBC News. “I don’t think it’s going to result in an outcome. And if you take a look at the chances of success versus the probability of failure, it’s not even close.”

Tillis also warned that Democrats could offer unlimited amendments at a simple-majority threshold, some of which could put politically vulnerable Republican senators in a bind.

“Do you really think if you’re targeting Susan Collins, or some of our most at-risk people, and she has to vote against something that’s politically problematic, that they’re going to be able to explain, well, it was just a motion to table?” he said, referring to the Maine Republican who is one of the GOP's most vulnerable senators up for re-election this fall.
...
Retiring Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., supports the SAVE America Act, but said it would be wiser for Trump to just narrowly focus on voter ID provisions, which have more widespread support. The bill also requires proof of citizenship to register to vote, which Democrats argue is unnecessary since non-citizen voting is already illegal and rare and would just end up disenfranchising American citizens with added burdens. And Trump has suggested that Republicans add even more contentious issues, like banning transgender people from women's sports.

“There’s dreams, and there’s then reality,” Bacon told NBC News. “The smart plan is to focus on voter ID. And have a plan to make housing more affordable.”

“He’s still fixated on 2020,” Bacon added of Trump’s relentless focus on the SAVE America Act.
Reasonable explanation of how the talking filibuster could be problematic for Republicans.

Reasonable explanation of how the talking filibuster could be problematic for Republicans.
All of this could be solved by simply getting rid of the archaic fillibuster. Because when the democrats take back power they are absolutely going to get rid of it.

Absolutely?

There are Democratic senators who will oppose that just like Republicans do now. It's not nearly as certain as frightened MAQA yahoos think it is.

The biggest change to voting in Republican election bill could become a burden for many US voters

Bogdan’s experience in New Hampshire is a glimpse into the future for potentially millions of voters across the country. That is if Republican voting legislation being pushed aggressively by President Donald Trump passes Congress and a “show your papers” law is put in place in time for the November elections.
...
Obtaining the necessary documents under the SAVE Act is not as easy as it might sound. A similar effort was tried in Kansas a decade ago and turned into a debacle that eventually was blocked by the courts after more than 30,000 eligible citizens were prevented from registering.

A long list of documents to use, but with caveats
Rebekah Caruthers, president and CEO at the Fair Elections Center, said the legislation’s strict documentation requirements could move the U.S. “in the opposite direction” of representative democracy.

“If this bill passes, it would deny millions of eligible Americans their fundamental freedom to vote,” she said in an email. “This includes millions of people who make up your communities, including married women, people of color and voters who live in rural areas.”

The list of qualifying documents in the SAVE Act for proving citizenship appears long, but many of them come with qualifiers.

Election Security, March 2026

Many Americans Confident in Fair Elections This November, But Doubts on the Rise
Americans More Concerned with Accessibility of Elections Rather Than Making Sure Ineligible Voters Don’t Vote
When thinking about November’s elections, Americans are more concerned with ensuring that everyone who wants to vote can do so (59%) rather than making sure that no one votes who is ineligible (41%). Democrats (86%) and independents (53%) are more concerned that everyone who wants to vote can cast a ballot while Republicans (70%) are more concerned about making sure ineligible voters cannot vote.

This exactly the desired outcome. Suppression is easier than justifying a national emergency/martial law.

I find the map dubious. But let’s go back to only white male property owners voting. What a stupid fuck.

Lee admits that MAQA has to change the rules and try and steal the election so they don't lose.

So you’re saying “stupid times” to hear to stay?

Only Democrats don’t get this

Crime surges in lawless St Paul

"As a 30-year law enforcement veteran, I can tell you this: auto theft goes down when city leaders make it a priority and criminals know there will be consequences. We’ve seen that in St. Paul, where focused enforcement drove car theft down sharply, while Minneapolis is back over 1,000 auto thefts in just the first two months of this year."

Good for St. Paul - focusing on real criminals that are hurting society rather than being bullied into focusing their efforts on working with ICE/CBP to roundup working members of society.
