They also tended to be learned men unlike common folk who were more basic in their understandings of philosophy and religion.

If your position is genuinely that America was influenced by Judeo-Christian culture but was not founded as a Christian nation, then we're largely in agreement.

But that's not the same claim being made by the unhinged, radical, Christo-fascist maQa extremists who insist that the United States is a Christian nation and that Christianity deserves some privileged status in our government and laws. Those Christo-fascists are attempting to destroy this great nation.

And that Heritage quote is doing some impressive semantic gymnastics with “state papers.” If they mean that the Founders didn't write “I am a Deist” into an official government document, well, sure. But if you're claiming there is no primary-source evidence of heterodox (Deistic, Unitarian, etc.) beliefs among the Founders, that's simply false. Their own letters and writings are evidence, and Jefferson and Adams in particular are hardly obscure examples.

In other words, “Christianity influenced the Founding” and “America was founded as a Christian nation” are two very different claims. The first is historically uncontroversial. The second doesn't magically become true because the Declaration mentions a Creator.
