Yeah it was good, felt like they were trying to recapture the Snatch vibe though after Ritchie's abysmal "Revolver"

"In Bruges" "Eastern Promises" "Hot Fuzz" were pretty decent British films too...
It's fucking Brugge!!!

In Bruges is great movie.

Why does the film have no American film distributor? Because the American film industry pigeon-holes every film and script being marketed. If something like your film did badly recently, that means your film will bomb too.

I'm marketing a script right now which involves a 1920's football story -- my agent is telling me that half the responses are, "Like Leatherheads? Not interested." They won't even read the synopsis.

A biopic about Darwin sounds a lot like a biopic about Kinsey. Here are the box office receipts for the 2004 film, "Kinsey" from rottentomatoes.com.

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/kinsey/numbers.php

So when the film maker says "Darwin," the film distribution companies hear "Kinsey." "Kinsey" got great critical reviews too.

A British film about Charles Darwin has failed to find a US distributor because his theory of evolution is too controversial for American audiences, according to its producer.

Can you imagine if this would have happened with Passion of the Christ? This really has become a country of censorship run by organized religion.

Well, I liked Remains of the Day, but IMO most classic novels should remain novels. The visuals are in the language. Watching a movie is like reading a Cliff's Notes. You miss the point and everything in between.

Example: Any Faulkner novel made into a movie is crap.

dude - i'm a pretty serious film snob - I watch way too many foreign films and love indy flicks too. My point was that in an environment where even "shortbus" can get a distributor... this movie had to have some pretty serious flaws - or, conversely be so totally unmarketable that you couldn't put in even in the art houses.

my point being - stop looking for boogeymen and recognize that no studio exec ever licked his chops at the chance to distribute something described as "a British made biopic of a noted 19th century biologist"... I've seen a lot of movies your average customer would call "boring" and i've liked many of them... (including Kinsey btw) but the thought of this movie leaves me drowsy.

Good for you MJ but I only get to 2-3 movies a year and my life is complicated enough with work, kids, home, etc. so when I do go to a movie I just want to veg and those "smart *ss slacker movies and blow 'em up buddy movies" are good for that. I haven't seen a truly thought provoking movie in years and I don't need your self-righteous crap because of it. They should remake the movie. In addition to Darwin being a biologist, have him also be Jack the Ripper. That would be a lot more interesting.

You definitely have something against Darwin.....

This is a movie about one of the most controversial figures in human history........his young daughter died, his wife was deeply religious, and he struggled with his faith.........yeah, sounds totally uninteresting!

I think that the movie looks AWESOME......from the subject matter to the acting to the beautiful English countryside and cinematography. We both know that this film WILL be released here (it doesn't open in Great Britain until Sept.25) It looks like this guy is just trying to build interest for his film (it's been done before!) Anyway......can't wait to see it.

FIFY.

I would see this movie (maybe not in the theaters) but I would want to watch it. It does peak my interest, but my point is that the general masses probably won't be drawn to the story that the plot description I've read portrays. It'll do ok which is why it would be released in the fall or winter... but it won't be in theaters for long. Just sayin'

wow... just wow... i'm familiar with Darwin, believe in evolutionary theory and the whole thing... just pointing out how a distributor would view a Darwin biopic... i would point out that the motorcycle diaries had trouble get a distributor deal too (and it was one of my favorite films of the decade) niche movies (and this is one) always struggle

TTBF, you're being far too logical and missing the intelligent design conspiracy that is suppressing this firm as well as missing the opportunity to properly admonish and condemn all of those less enlightened persons whose tastes differ from your own.

Run, Fat Boy, Run is another pretty good Brit movie...

But actually, I like just about anything Simon Pegg has done so far (Shaun, Hot Fuzz, Run, etc.)

I actually own Point Break. Stumbled on it in the bargain bin at Target for $5! I mean, you don't have to be oscar worthy to make the "worth a fiver" cut. It's a great movie to get baked and watch.

Oh, even though I think MJ is a choad, I agree with him that this would probably be a pretty good movie to see. Hopefully they would focus more on the inner struggles Darwin faced and less on the love story aspect.

Hot Fuzz was great, as was In Brogues and most of the others listed.

Don't any of you fuckers have IFC & Sundance? You can see a lot of these mentioned on there. At least that's where I think I've seen em'.
