Wildcat Offense---Here to Stay?
The Dolphins are running all OVER the Colts with this offense....10 plays, over 100 yards of offense on this set alone. The Colts defense is absolutely gassed, and they can NOT get off the field. Peyton Manning has run THREE plays in the 3rd quarter, and there's about 15 seconds left in the quarter....
What say ye? Is this a passing fad like the run-n-shoot? Or is this wrinkle here to stay?

I don't know what the big deal about this is. The "Wildcat" is nothing new. It's just a rehash of the old Single Wing. It used to be the NFL's predominant offense. No big deal.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.
Re: Wildcat Offense---Here to Stay?
I'm not a Dolphin fan, but I like how they're able to shake up a defense with the Pat White spread, the Ronnie Brown wildcat, and (at least last night) a pretty effective Pennington passing game. Unbelieveable that a team can lose a game with that kind of time of possession.
Re: Wildcat Offense---Here to Stay?
I think it is here to stay, with the athletes now as opposed to 20 years ago it won't go anywhere. It is a good change up to the game. There are only so many things to do out of it, but the threat of something big is always there.

Re: Wildcat Offense---Here to Stay?
For the wildcat to continue to be effective, you must throw the ball at least one out of 100 times. Otherwise, defenses will key on the runner and it will no longer be useful. If I was Miami last night, I would have put Pat White in 10 or so times, and on about the 6th attempt, I would have play-action passed. Put it in their minds early in the season and the defense has to respect it.clenz wrote:I think it is here to stay, with the athletes now as opposed to 20 years ago it won't go anywhere. Re: Wildcat Offense---Here to Stay?
I don't think that necessarily true. The Wildcat offense takes the game back to the basic premise of beating the man in front of you. If the 10 blockers on offense beat their 10 guys, it becomes a one-on-one between the RB and a safety or corner. If that happens the RB is already down field 5+ yards and in the open field I'd take the RB over a DB 8 out of 10 times.BeauFoster wrote:For the wildcat to continue to be effective, you must throw the ball at least one out of 100 times. It may not be here to stay because its no flashy and the NFL is all about flashy. The Wildcat has no place for WR's or scat backs. Chicks dig the long ball.

Re: Wildcat Offense---Here to Stay?
Atlanta keyed only on the run last week when Miami ran the wildcat and stuffed it every time. They didn't even bother to cover the receivers half the time - everyone just ran straight to the backfield.
Carolina let DeAngelo Williams throw a pass from the wildcat this past weekend and even though it was a duck, it was completed for a 1st down. (Of course, Jake isn't any better!)

Re: Wildcat Offense---Here to Stay?
I feel like it can work if you have a lot of slash backs and receivers... go out and get Randal-El, Pat White, Chase Daniel, etc... when you have guys who played QB in that position a throw is much more respected... I'd be interested to see how many spread option qb's get drafted with that intent over the next couple years...BeauFoster wrote:Atlanta keyed only on the run last week when Miami ran the wildcat and stuffed it every time. Just bring back the old spinner play.

Re: Wildcat Offense---Here to Stay?
This is the main reason that Tim Teabag could be so dangerous in the NFL. He's not a pure thrower by any stretch of the imagination, but the ability has to be respected. He's the type of player that could bring a version of the spread to the league. He's big enough to be able to absorb the hits and physical enough to hit the holes for 5 or so yards. Plus, if you key on the run, he can hit a quick route with pretty decent accuracy that can spring a big play.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:I feel like it can work if you have a lot of slash backs and receivers... go out and get Randal-El, Pat White, Chase Daniel, etc... when you have guys who played QB in that position a throw is much more respected...
