Can't believe I'm saying it, but nice job, BHO

Post by ASUG8 »

I didn't vote for the man (and it's still just words) but I'm glad to see Obama pushing the rest of the world to wipe their own behinds - maybe the Russians and Chinese will begin to assume some of their obligations as world policemen.

In his first speech before the United Nations General Assembly, President Obama is expected to challenge the global community by saying it's failing its people and that fixing the world's problems is not "solely America's endeavor."

"Those who used to chastise America for acting alone in the world cannot now stand by and wait for America to solve the world's problems alone," Obama said in prepared remarks scheduled for delivery at 10 a.m. EDT.

The White House released excerpts in advance of Obama's address Wednesday to the world body that carried a remarkably blunt tone. In essence, Obama's message is that he expects plenty in return for reaching out.

"We have sought in word and deed a new era of engagement with the world," Obama will say, echoing the cooperative theme he promised as a candidate and has since used as a pillar of his foreign policy. "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility."

He said if the world is honest with itself, it has fallen woefully short.

"Extremists sowing terror in pockets of the world," Obama said. "Protracted conflicts that grind on and on. Genocide and mass atrocities. More and more nations with nuclear weapons. Melting ice caps and ravaged populations. Persistent poverty and pandemic disease."

Words are one thing. The response will be quite another. Let's see if Putin and the Chinese, among other members of the hallowed UN, do a damned thing in response. :|

And they probably won't.

But BHO has given cover to himself and any future presidents next time the world complains about the US - you had your chance to get involved, but didn't do jack.

I pray that the days of "Team America World Police" are coming to an end...

Democracy and freedom can't be given they have to be taken...

props to a couple of board conks for the credit where it's due... not easy to do.

I agree with Jon - this isn't likely to spark a dramatic turnaround - it's a shot over the bow, a message from the bully pulpit of "yo, you don't like us acting like we run the place, step the fvck up and be men then"

very good message from Obama on this one - i'll be interested to see how the world reacts (if at all)

It is easy to do. We may have different views on different issues but it isn't hard to get behind a president when he says things with which you agree. :thumb:

PS, I don't think most of us are as hung up on party or political affiliations as we act. :? ;)

In fact I disagree with about 50% of the republican party platform

Chinese President Hu Jintao unveiled an ambitious plan that included planting enough trees to cover an area the size of Norway, expanding China's use of nuclear energy and pledging to generate 15 percent of the country's energy needs from renewable sources within a decade.
Chinese leaders will be able to implement their proposal even as the Obama administration struggles to win congressional approval for the comparable U.S. program.

Leading environmentalists welcomed the offer by China, which has been criticized for rising pollution levels as its economy booms.

Former Vice President Al Gore hailed Mr. Hu's proposal.

"I think the glass is very much half-full with China," Mr. Gore said.

Not a problem for me - I'm a social moderate, fiscal conservative - I haven't agreed with many of the things the current admin has done, but I'll credit him for what I believe is a blunt assessment of the rest of the world not towing the line. I don't like us guilted into feeling responsible to cure all the world's ills - we've got plenty of problems at home we could solve with some of the billions we're spending to fix social ills overseas. I'm not saying we shouldn't do our part, but with China and India becoming huge economies they have to pitch in, along with the EU. "With great power comes great responsibility".

It's one thing to identify problems, but I'm afraid of Obama's proposed solutions to those problems. More government, higher taxes, more mandates, greater restrictions on individual liberty.

I'll be spending a lot more time here. I recently received a month-long ban on the other board for saying Cap'n would return to AGS only to give ralph an atomic wedgie.
