Re: Question for Montana Fans
This thread was started as a sincere question, not to poke fun at the Griz. UNC has only been a member in the 'Sky for 3 yrs. Keep that in mind.
UNC,
To answer the question from what I know about UM fans and fans in general...
The fans would love to play an FBS and the fans want to. But they dont get to decide who they play. UM doesn't need FBS money and the school president makes the decisions.
UM fans do love going 11-0 but they would love to still play an FBS even though it won't help them so much or necessary.
(the fans aren't overly excited to play DII's)
But at the same time imagine having 7+ home games, thats something UNC or WSU would know nothing about.

Re: Question for Montana Fans
Last season including the playoffs UM had like 9 home games, imagine how sweet that must have been!

Re: Question for Montana Fans
All true, valid points. Well stated, wildcat. I'd LOVE to see the Griz play Boise State, Utah, Wyoming (w), Utah State (w), Idaho (w), Washington State (w), etc....but it probably ain't gonna happen. Mostly becuase those teams don't want somebody coming in there with even the REMOTEST chance of winning.weberwildcat wrote:The fans would love to play an FBS and the fans want to. As bad as WAZZU is currently in the PAC 10, sorry but they beat the GRIZ more often than not.

Re: Question for Montana Fans
As a Bison fan - I've noticed that NDSU is in a bind similar (but an order of magnitude different) than the Griz
1. the FBS team paying you has to fly you in from a location that is fairly remote (for most teams)
2. after paying an FCS team $300-400k to come to your house - you damn sure better beat them... and like with NDSU and Minnesota - there was a lot of blowback among Minn alums for paying the Bison $300k and then LOSING...
3. in the case of the Griz - if you are Utah St., Idaho, NMSU, Wyoming... why PAY the Griz to come in and beat you? (piss and moan all you like about it - but before I started following FCS football (back when the Bison were D-II and I was an FBS guy) I had heard of Montana and Delaware at the I-AA level and that's it... for a reason - they have a reputation for winning)
4. you wanna razz Montana for something... the home and home thing (also a beaten horse) is at least more valid
5. nonconference scheduling means different things for different programs - if you plan on vying for the NC, prepare for it - a D-II or non-schollie, one "signature" FCS team... etc. If it's a rebuilding year... make the bank and get walloped by Nebraska... but in the case of the Griz... they don't rebuild, they reload... (i'm no griz fan, but if you deny that, you're fooling yourself) so there is no lost season where you bank a couple FBS game...

Agreed about local FBS teams, no chance in hell any of em would dare play UM though...sadly.
I've been wishing for a USU rematch for my Wildcats since we last played in 2001. They don't dare play us. Even now they have 4 of our former assistant coaches...I think they will wait til Higgins/Trevyn graduate before they schedule the game, just in case.
In 2001 we weren't even good, we had 3 wins and lost to USU 56-43 and we went 2-5 in conf.

Just had to point out EVERY other Big Sky team plays at least one FBS school this year.
I think they should schedule App every year and make it a rivalry.

Re: Question for Montana Fans
Given that a lower FBS school couldn't afford a worthwhile paycheck, the only way the Griz would play a mid-major FBS these days is with a home-and-home deal. Since pretty much every FBS fan would scream bloody murder over traveling to a "lowly" FCS school, the only way this has a hope of happening is with a renewal of the Idaho rivalry.

Re: Question for Montana Fans
No alumni base in the country at the fbs level would support a "rivalry game" with an FCS team on an annual basis (ESPECIALLY if it was home and home) and in the case of Idaho... no way they'd support losing to Montana 4 out of 5 times...Mvemjsunpx wrote:Given that a lower FBS school couldn't afford a worthwhile paycheck, the only way the Griz would play a mid-major FBS these days is with a home-and-home deal. Re: Question for Montana Fans
Montana would love to play some teams like that but no one wants to pay them enough money. Two years ago we were gonna go play Kansas State but they got a deal to go to like some big school and play a espn game so that fell through. And minnesota has tried to get us to play them the past couple years but they wont pay the Griz enough money. Because when you make half a million every home game it hurts to get a lose and not get that money.AZGrizFan wrote:All true, valid points. Well stated, wildcat.
