Obama's Olympic Failure...

Post by Baldy »

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/w ... 859031.ece

Does this guy have Obama pegged or what?
There has been a growing narrative taking hold about Barack Obama’s presidency in recent weeks: that he is loved by many, but feared by none; that he is full of lofty vision, but is actually achieving nothing with his grandiloquence.

Chicago’s dismal showing today, after Mr Obama’s personal, impassioned last-minute pitch, is a stunning humiliation for this President. It cannot be emphasised enough how this will feed the perception that on the world stage he looks good — but carries no heft.

Mr Obama was greeted — as usual — like a rock star by the IOC delegates in Copenhagen — then humiliated by them. Perception is reality. A narrow defeat for Chicago would have been acceptable — but the sheer scale of the defeat was a bombshell, and is a major blow for Mr Obama at a time when questions are being asked about his style of governance.
What an embarrassment. I weep for my country...

More evidence that it will take decades of Donk administrations to clean up our shattered world image in the wake of DubyaCheneyRush.

I, too, weep for my country, Brother Bald One.

We can nitpick each either on a Conk/Donk level here, but it was going to happen. The northern hemisphere countries, vastly Eurocentric, had dominated the Olympics for more than a century. Fvck, they gave Hitler the Olympics once!

Now, after the United States and her European allies shit the bed on the economy and made the world a much worse place to live in, what with our wars and all, it was time to give it up to our brothers in the southern hemisphere.

Go Brazil!!!!!

I'd bet money it was the very people we are fighting that blew that poor guys leg off. I am not sure what you are trying to accomplish by this picture, but I call BS on how you used it and where you are placing the blame for it.

Can't be too mad at Obama for failing. When Obama has to speak through translators it negates the advantage of his hypnotic cadence and he has to actually appeal to reason rather than just make people feel warm and fuzzy with poetic speak that contains no substance.

Why didn't they let him be TelePrompted in the most prevalent language at the meeting? He can't speak English without it so why not try French, Spanish or Portuguese?

A question to some: If the city wasn't Chicago and/or the president wasn't Obama would you still be elated that the olympic bid failed?

I don't think I've ever seen a time where so many in this country were openly campaigning for our defeat, and ultimately, embarrassment in trying to host a global sporting event. Certainly not Salt Lake..or Atlanta..or the World Cup..

Sounds like a large portion of the country is still butthurt over last November.

I agree with Ivytalk from another thread that I'm sure the IOC already had it in for the U.S. before voting even took place, but the vitriol and overall dickishness taking place on the right over this whole thing is absurd.

It's not just "the right".

Most of the "experts" agreed the vote would come down to Chicago or Rio. Many of those same people thought that Obama making a presentation would put Chicago over the top.

Excuse me if i find it funny that after all that travel and expense to send Obama and his wife on separate trips to Copenhagen only to have Chicago get eliminated in the first round. Now that it is over, could it possibly be that Obama actually hurt Chicago's chances?

Yo, Baldy, he did a good thing. It ain't in his hands. You fvcks woulda berated him for not going and making a pitch, citing all the dollars we lost out on with the Olympics.

Now, go back to doing what you do best - being MY bitch!

I guess I just don't see the humor in all of this. I don't think Obama's appearance in Denmark helped but it likely didn't hurt either. I'd wager that Rio's bid was already in the bag and the IOC, having an opportunity to humilate the United States on a world stage, decided to do so. And then to see so many folks over here reveling in the defeat? Yeah, I don't get it..

What was he supposed to do, not go? Blair did it for London's 2012 bid. The leaders of Brazil, Japan and Spain were in attendance this year. It's a damned if you do damned if you don't proposition. If he didn't go and Chicago lost then the same talking heads would blame him. Regardless, the guy is never going to win with the crowd who is hoping to see him fail to begin with.
Thank You, Mr. President
Joe Scarborough

Count me as one conservative who is disappointed that President Obama's hometown will not be hosting the 2012 Olympic Games.

Chicago is a beautiful city that would have made a perfect backdrop for the Olympics. The President was right to fly to Copenhagen to try to land the games, not for the sake of his city, but for the good of his country. The fact President Obama failed makes me respect him more for taking the chance, and the fact many right-wing figures opposed the President's mission shows just how narrow-minded partisanship makes us all.

For the better part of 20 years, a bitterness has infected our politics that has weakened our country.

We Republicans spent eight years trying to delegitimize Bill Clinton.

Democrats spent the next eight years doing the same to George W. Bush.

Now that a Democrat is in the Oval Office again, it is the GOP who is trying to delegitimize a sitting president.

When I try to talk to Republicans about the need to break this cycle of viciousness, some cite the chapter and verse of every hateful left wing attack against George W. Bush.

Whenever I attempt to have a conversation with some Democrats about the need for us respect our president-- whether he be an Obama or a Bush-- I am told that Bush deserved whatever he got because he was a lying war criminal who hated the Constitution and loved torturing
people.

Fortunately, there are a growing number of Americans who believe we cannot continue going on this way.

Hey Baldy...

How pissed off were you when George W. Bush failed to get the Olympics for New York City in 2012?

I'm going to assume you were much less pissed off than you are now.
