New and want to know something
Hey everyone. im brand new to this forum and just wanted to ask a question that has been nagging at me for a long time. What kind of offense does montana run? It seems to be a varient of the West Coast and i just want to be sure.

I could have replied " they run an offense where they trade field goals for touchdowns (i.e., Wofford game)"....chris wrote:how did I know that was coming!AZGrizFan wrote: They run a shitty one.

Re: New and want to know something
The Griz run a spread offense. They use mostly shotgun & 1-back (under center) sets with a few H-back sets thrown in—they never use a fullback. With the exception of 3rd/4th & short and goal line situations, they utilize at least 2 receivers & usually 3 or 4. Montana likes conventional runs, particularly zone-read runs. They also pass a fair amount. The Griz occasionally run some spread option, of which we saw a fair amount in '07.UTGrizfan wrote:Hey everyone. im brand new to this forum and just wanted to ask a question that has been nagging at me for a long time. It is not a west coast system nor a run & shoot system.

Re: New and want to know something
It's a dynamic read offense like Hawaii runs.. except not quite as run and shoot. The QB looks over the field, takes the snap and delivers the ball based on route. Kinda like telepathy. Mvemjsunpx hit the offense pretty well. The spread option I think was a gimmick based thing where we only ran it in the first four games with Larson, then very very rarely when we got into conference play. Weird hybrid offense.

No, we ran spread option plays the entire season with Bergquist. That long TD run he had against Albany was a spread option play.MrTitleist wrote:It's a dynamic read offense like Hawaii runs.. except not quite as run and shoot. When Larsen was in, we ran spread option as the base of the offense. We still throw a few option plays in as long as the QB is mobile, though.

Jesus, if that doesn't point to the weaknesses of our offense in the red zone, nothing does. I sure hope his replacement is GOOD!putter wrote:Hey, Dan Carpenter was not the all time scoring leader for nothing!!MarkCCU wrote:Montana haso an offense?

Well, I read on egriz that Montana had the most pathetic offense, and everyone from Hauck to Tinkle needs to be fired ASAP. If they only would do that, then the Pac-10 will invite them for full membership.

Re: New and want to know something
The Griz had a 59% TD% in the redzone in 2007. The NCAA doesn't rank redzone percentages for some reason, but I'm guessing that would easily rank in the top half nationally. Not an elite number, but better than most teams. The redzone scoring % in '07 was 78% (30 TDs & 10 FGs in 51 trips), which was fourth in the Big Sky. I'm guessing Montana's TD% actually ranked higher than their scoring % nationally.AZGrizFan wrote:Jesus, if that doesn't point to the weaknesses of our offense in the red zone, nothing does. And App State's stats were built up against Lenoir-Rhyne, Western Carolina, & UT-Chattanooga. (Not to mention that Albany was nearly a playoff-caliber team).

Re: New and want to know something
We didn't run a ton after the OOC schedule was done, as I mentioned in my previous post. But yes, we threw a few in. I did notice that when Larson came in, he was pretty much the ball carrier, he rarely pitched it or dropped back to pass from the spread.. which was odd.Mvemjsunpx wrote:No, we ran spread option plays the entire season with Bergquist. Fair enough. At least we're playing Cal Poly & UC Davis this year. yep. App State flat out sucked on offense last year. Sure glad those other 12 games didn't affect what was racked up against those 3.Mvemjsunpx wrote:

I was challenging AZ's assertion that Montana's offense sucked & was only padded by weak opponents. App State played a few weak opponents, too, yet I doubt many people would suggest their offensive numbers were inaccurately padded (nor should they). Everyone plays some weak opponents.

My point has always been twofold: 1) playing the likes of SUU and Fort Lewis (I'll give you Albany) does nothing to prepare UM for the post season. And 2) we get to play UNC and Sac State in the regular season. Pad our stats against THEM. That's why I'm much happier with this year's sked. CP and Davis will be MUCH better tests for our young men, and I think they'll be THAT much better prepared when facing EWU IN Cheney, and MSU and PSU (whom I think will be much improved this year) and Weber (also much improved).

Re: New and want to know something
I think it will prepare us better for the postseason, too, though I don't think the Griz lost in the first round in '07 because of a weak schedule. However, I dispute that PSU will be a whole lot better, since I believe they lost quite a few key players from last year's team. I also wouldn't hold out much hope for Weber because every time we think they'll be good, they suck.AZGrizFan wrote:

Re: New and want to know something
I think PSU probably NEEDED to lose a few players, particularly with the quantum shift in style Jerry plays versus the old coach. He needs to get HIS players in there....just having the rest of the team have another spring under their belt and a better understanding of Jerry's system will make PSU a better team. And I have faith in Weber....besides, they ALWAYS seem to give the Griz fits....Mvemjsunpx wrote:I think it will prepare us better for the postseason, too, though I don't think the Griz lost in the first round in '07 because of a weak schedule. That argument would work except that PSU lost a bunch of players who performed quite well in 2007:AZGrizFan wrote:

- They lost starting QB Brian White (2171 yards, 133.9 rating), though they do have talented—but unproven—people to replace him.
Although the Vikings barely run the ball, they lost RB/FB Olaniyi Sobomehin. He had 75% of the team's rushing yards (515) & was also third in catches with 40. He also amassed 11 total TD's
Portland State also loses their top-3 wide receivers: Tremayne Kirkland (84 rec., 1059 yards, 10 TDs), Kenneth Mackins (50 rec., 765 yards, 5 TDs), & David Lewis (37 rec., 437 yards, 5 TDs). Given how important wide receiver depth is to the run & shoot, this could hurt.
PSU graduates 5 offensive linemen (Brennen Carvalho, Andrew Havili, Darren Wood, Daren Heerspink, Cody Feakin). Other than Carvalho, I don't know how many of these were starters since http://www.goviks.com doesn't seem to have a depth chart or even player bios.
The Vikings lose 10 of the 19 defensive players who amassed at least 10 tackles. They lose 4 in the secondary, but their secondary sucked anyway so that doesn't mean much. The Viking run defense was pretty respectable, however, and they lose 6 in the front seven (LB Jordan Senn, DE Casey Tyler, DE Cole Smith, DT Philip Humphery, LB Christian Carlson, LB Branden Brooks).
It doesn't seem like the Vikings could possibly do worse than last year's 3-8 mark in 2008, but they have a lot of unknown quantities replacing solid, known quantities. At this point, anything better than 5-6 would surprise me. 3-8 actually has a strong likelihood looking at their schedule (wins over Western Oregon, Idaho State, & Northern Colorado; all at home). Their road schedule is brutal (UC Davis, Washington State, Sac, NAU, Weber, & Montana State) & a winless road mark is definitely plausible. Portland State is amassing the talent to be good down the road, but it doesn't look like it'll happen in 2008.
