A little while ago Chip told us that Captain Intangibles might eventually pass Pete Rose for the all-time hits record, which would totally be plausible if he's the vampire Lestat, the goddamn Highlander, or if you just happen to be fucking retarded. To reach 4256 hits, at his career rate of about 196 hits per season, he would have to play until he's 43 and without any drop-off in his production. Can't wait until Chip tells us Jeet is an MVP candidate this season when he was the eighth-best hitter on his own team. Choke on this, America, but Tim McCarver is looking better and better by the inning, and I can't believe I just said that and actually believe it

BTW - I'm watching this game on mute and listening the cars honk at each other outside my front door. That's how bad these announcers are.

How is he the 8th best hitter on the Yankees? He was third in the AL in average? Career-wise perhaps, but MVP awards aren't based on career numbers.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:bench said it best... the 8th best hitter on his own team and he's only in the mvp conversation because of where he playsdanefan wrote:

BTW - I don't think he should get the MVP, but he certainly should be in the discussion. Mauer should get it. Without him the Twins wouldn't have done anything near what they've done.

oy... rough game... I figured the Twins would lose one in NY no matter what... would prefer to have had it be game 2 - however in 03 and 04 the Twins took game one and proceeded to lose the series... so maybe this is one of those combo-breakers

He finished eighth in slugging, eighth in homers, ninth in RBI, sixth in doubles, and tied for sixth in OPS. On his own team. He is a very good baseball player on a very good team, but when everyone else in the lineup is mashing the shit out of the baseball like that, I don't know how a bunch of old-ass sportswriters can single him out and give him the lion's share of the credit. And just so we're clear I understand that's not what you were trying to do.danefan wrote:How is he the 8th best hitter on the Yankees? He was third in the AL in average? A great quote for TTBF from the guys at the former firejoemorgan.com:
The guy who hits seventh on the Yankees has an .865 OPS (same as Jeter) and is hitting .319 and plays second base. The guy who hits eighth on the Yankees has 27 home runs. The Yankees have pinch-hitters who are better than anyone on the A's. The Yankees' line-up is looney-tunes. Also, they have some pitchers who are good.
The Twins, meanwhile, have Joe Mauer and fourteen guys who either are Nick Punto or look and play exactly like Nick Punto.

statistically - jeter's numbers are on par with Denard Span... excellent - esp at leadoff... but neither are anywhere near MVP... my bitching is about the "old wrinkly-assed sports writers" who hump his leg... (quite frankly, and I've said this to the Jeter haters for years... "you'd fucking love him if he played for your squad"...)bench wrote:He finished eighth in slugging, eighth in homers, ninth in RBI, sixth in doubles, and tied for sixth in OPS. On his own team. and benchy... i wish that were less accurate... (and this year, with Kubel, Cuddyer, Cabrera and Span... it's less obvious as it has been in previous years to be honest) - here's the kicker... Punto makes 4 mil a year...that's right 4 mil a year... gardenhire is super loyal to players who remind him of himself (mediocre utility infielders who hit mendoza and are only above average defensively)

The Twins lost as Gardy said, because of CC, not fatigue. The Twins have a chance to win game in this series, how many depends on the pitching. I don't think Jeter is over-rated, he is a great player. It always sounds like announcers are biased towards the Yankees or the Red Sox or Brett Favre. They aren't, they are just more familiar with these teams and players, therefore their speak will center more on them. It's does come accross as biased, but it really isn't. Yes, if Mauer was in NY he would be Pope, in Minnesota they call him the Baby Jesus.

well... the die is cast... twins got so royally fucked tonight by the umpires that there seems little point to continuing the series...
mauers double would have brought him home on the the third hit of the inning... but instead he singles on the next pitch and has to stop at third...
fucked over, and if the twins don't protest... i'm beyond pissed off...
the umpiring all over the alds has been horseshit... but this is a new low... the goddamn ball was a FOOT FAIR and they still blew... Twins fans are gonna be calling a Donaghy call from this point on i'm sure (not sure i'd go that far... but it was worse then Denkinger)

Don't think for a second that I'm enjoying any of this, but tonight you basically had the Lonnie Smith gaffe and the Kent Hrbek horseshit in the same game. comparing blowing the call down the line - that was a foot fair to Ron Gant failing to slide and falling off first base is another thing entirely. (watch the play... really watch it... don't watch the feet, watch Gant's shoulders... he's falling off the base, Hrbek just gets out of his way and holds the tag on him) apples to oranges my friend - one is an arguably subjective call based upon whether or not Gant's momentum was carrying him off the bag... this was a clear call fair or foul... and ol' Phil Cuzzi fucked it up

the Hrbek play was game 2
the Smith deke was in game 7

Re: ALDS: New York Yankees vs Minnesota Twins
I mentioned this earlier in the day on another thread - MLB brings in 2 extra umps to work the outfield and they fuck it up. Instead of putting 2 more blind clowns on the field, MLB should use replay so that the umps can at least get the obvious stuff correct. Not only would Mauer have scored if he had doubled, but with runners on 1st and 2nd (instead of bases loaded) the line drive to Texaiera would have been a hit because Tex would have holding the runner on 1st.TwinTownBisonFan wrote:well... the die is cast... twins got so royally fucked tonight by the umpires that there seems little point to continuing the series...
