I was yelling so loud when Rollins hit that double that I woke the baby up. I only got to enjoy the moment for a few brief minutes as I was then confronted with an angry wife handing me a screeming kid.

Actually, part of the karma of this magical game was that LIDGE GOT THE WIN! He struck out the only two batters he faced in the 9th.JMU DJ wrote:WOW!
Pretty cool from the historical aspect too, though I don't think Rollins double will be remembered as much as Gibson or Bevens.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs/ ... id=4578540Try to understand what just happened here. You can count the postseason baseball games that resemble what happened at Citizens Bank Park on this indelible Monday with two fingers. And those two fingers would be used to count games that can best be described with one word: "LEGENDARY."
It was Jimmy Rollins' heart-thumping two-run double with two outs in the ninth that turned defeat into triumph, turned a 4-3 loss into Phillies 5, Dodgers 4. But now let's do our best to put that game-winning hit into historical perspective.
There have been 1,251 postseason games in baseball history. Only two others -- two -- ever ended this way, with a walk-off extra-base hit by a team that was one out away from losing.
One was The Kirk Gibson Game -- Game 1 of the 1988 World Series, Gibson homering off Dennis Eckersley, Jack Buck warbling: "I don't believe what I just saw."
The other was The Bill Bevens Game -- Game 4 of the 1947 World Series, when Yankees pitcher Bill Bevens got within one out of the first no-hitter in World Series history, and then lost it all. Lost his win. Lost his place in immortality. Lost it on a two-run double by Cookie Lavagetto with two outs in the ninth.
And now here we are, still talking about it today, more than six decades later. Why? Because the October dots connect it with this game. OK, now get the picture? This wasn't just another walk-off win that unfolded in South Philadelphia on Monday. This was history.
Closers are really tanking this post season, I was happy that the Phillies had to make the bottom of the 9th comeback. Less heart palpitations when you don't have to use Lidge.
And Broxton continues to be Stairs' beyotch!

See that's the thing, Lidge seems to do fine when it's a non-save situation... bring him in when they're up by two and you got the makings of another Flash Gordon.

there may never have been a phrase uttered that more succinctly sums up Philly sports quite as well... in any other city in America it would have been a scandal - in Philly it's a rally cry.Ivytalk wrote:Chase couldn't have said it better himself!TwinTownBisonFan wrote:the NLFC's....

This one was coined by Ryan Howard on live network TV after J-Roll's game winner on Monday:TwinTownBisonFan wrote:there may never have been a phrase uttered that more succinctly sums up Philly sports quite as well... in any other city in America it would have been a scandal - in Philly it's a rally cry.Ivytalk wrote:

i always wondered why UTZ hadn't made Chase their guy... the marketing writes itself... makes more sense than Ryan Howard hawking Subway Philly cheesesteaks (which ought to be illegal)93henfan wrote:This one was coined by Ryan Howard on live network TV after J-Roll's game winner on Monday:TwinTownBisonFan wrote:

Re: 2009 Philadelphia Phillies Thread
I haven't read the whole thread but that should be a wild one when the NY Giants play Philly and then later in the day the Phillies probably play the Yankees.
Re: 2009 Philadelphia Phillies Thread
This happened last year with the Falcons game, I think they were commenting how the Eagles fans were chanting for the Phillies during the football game and that some turned it into a day/night football-baseball double headers. This one is different as it's two NY teams the football game is a conference rival. I'd be all over it if I could, all day sports/tailgate marathon.Ursus A. Horribilis wrote:I haven't read the whole thread but that should be a wild one when the NY Giants play Philly and then later in the day the Phillies probably play the Yankees.
Over under on the number of NY Yankees/Giants fans getting beat up in the parking lots? 5? 10? Or is that a gross underestimation?

I've posted this in the tickets forum, but just in case you don't get there, my brothers site is raffling off tickets to game 5 of the World Series. All proceeds go to City of Hope.

Re: 2009 Philadelphia Phillies Thread
There was never any doubt that the Phils would pick up Lee's club option. I'm kind of sorry to see Myers go, since he has been a career Phillie who was always willing to pitch in whatever capacity the Phils needed (starter or closer). I don't see Moyer in the starting rotation next year, and I think the Phils will pick up Feliz's option notwithstanding Amaro's ambiguous remarks.JMU DJ wrote:Phils pick up 2010 option for Lee, inform Meyers he won't be with the team next year.

Re: 2009 Philadelphia Phillies Thread
Phils decline option on Feliz but are keeping the door open for his return. Rumors are Phils are looking at Figgins, Beltre, Polanco, Tejada and DeRosa .... apparently Figgins is the number one choice. I've also heard some rumors about a potential Halladay trade involving Hamels... but then again, it's just a rumor.
http://www.philly.com/inquirer/sports/2 ... Feliz.htmlAmaro and his assistants will travel to the general managers meetings today in Chicago. Finding a third baseman now becomes one of the team's priorities. Several are on the free-agent market, including Chone Figgins, Adrian Beltre, and Mark DeRosa.
The Phils could also have interest in free agent Miguel Tejada, a longtime shortstop who is open to playing third base.
Second baseman Placido Polanco is another free agent who could find his way to third. The Phils explored the idea of trading for Tejada and moving him to third several years ago, but he was not open to changing positions at the time. Polanco played some third base for the Phils from 2002 to '05 before being traded to Detroit.
Amaro indicated last night that he had already covered some ground in his search for a third baseman.
"We've already had a couple of teams approach us about trades involving third basemen," he said.

I predicted that Hamels has thrown his last pitch in Philly, due to his dismal season and his unfortunate WS remarks, but I can't see him taking his California attitude and his hot wife to Toronto!JMU DJ wrote:Phils decline option on Feliz but are keeping the door open for his return.
