I am in no way a fan of Real but this is the equivalent to Liverpool losing to Burnley...it doesn't matter that much in the grand scheme of things in the soccer world. What really matters is that Real will most likely be in the fight to the very end for the only two trophies that anyone really cares about....La Liga title and the Champions League title. I imagine Real will recover from this and start whooping some ass pretty damn soon.

But this is why the Copa is two legged, and why Mexican and Argentine relegation is based on the avergae points for three years - it's just another tool for the rich to avoid embarrassment and keep control.

No way. Burnley is at least in the Premiership, Alcorcon (who?) is in the THIRD division in Spain. And, considering how much money Real just spent this summer, it makes it all the more embarrassing.

Also, I see them crashing out of the CL in the round of 16. :coffee:

Do you guys mean Barnsley?

They were the lower Championship team that beat Liverpool and Chelsea in the 07-08 FA Cup. Burnley were promoted to the Premier League, but assuming Bandl meant Barnsley, I'd have to agree with him. Alcorcon are near the top of their group in the Segunda, while Barnsley just avoided relegation last year. Both big clubs, huge expectations, out of touch fans, yeah, I'd say it's a valid comparision.

Just for shiggles, here are the lineups Real and Liverpool used:
Madrid:
Dudek
Arbeloa
Albiol
Metzelder
Drenthe
Diarra
Van der Vaart
Guti (Gago 46')
Granero (Marcelo 62')
Benzema
Raúl (Van Nistelrooy 72')

Liverpool:
Itandje
Finnan
Carragher
Hyypia
Riise
Benayoun
Lucas (Gerrard 75')
Xavi Alonso
Babel (Kewell 69')
Kuyt
Crouch

And since I found it, Chelsea:
Cudicini
Belletti (Pizarro 74')
Ricardo Carvalho
Terry
Bridge
Essien
Ballack
Joe Cole
Wright-Phillips
Malouda
Anelka

And looking at these, ok, I'd compare Alcorcon more to Chelsea's loss than Liverpool's.

Well, I harbor more hatred toward Real than Chelsea or Liverpool, so it's a bigger deal to me. :D :D

I think I may have meant Barnsley...didn't they beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Carling Cup in 2005....or it might have been Burnley...but isn't that exactly the point? Pn paper a huge club like Real, Liverpool or Chelsea should not lose to a club in a lower division. But it happens sometimes in these meaningless hardware tourneys.

And Grizz, Burnley only moved up to the PL this year for the first time in 33 years....although they may not have any bearing on this conversation anyways if in fact I mean to say Barnsley instead of Burnley

Ya, it was Barnsley who made that run to FA Cup semis last year and they beat Chelsea and LIverpool. And point taken, the G14 clubs should not lose when they put out lineups like the above. These things usually happen with a combination of youth and reserve teams so the full team can focus and league and European play, and that's why this is notable.
