Out West!
Out West!
Even though the topics of SUU, Poly, and UCD and conference realignment is talked about constantly, I figured I'd throw in my 2 cents on the whole deal. Even though a lot of criticism will probably come from Big Sky fans who do not want their conference changed, I would like to see SUU join the Sky as an all-sports member bringing the full conference membership to 10. With that said (even though I doubt it will ever happen b/c I have read the commissioner does not want football only members), Poly and UC-Davis should be invited as football-only members bringing the total number of football schools to 12 giving us 2 divisions. Both of those schools could stay in the Big West for their other sports. In addition to this, for all sports other than football, bring in any two of Denver, Utah Valley Univ., or Seattle Univ. This ultimately would give the Big Sky 12 members at all times. Poly and Davis would be members 11 and 12 for football and any of the above-mentioned would be 11 and 12 for all other sports. Just something to consider and I wish it would happen but the likelihood is slim to none.
Looking forward to hopefully seeing the Birds pull off the upset in Cedar this Saturday. It's been snowing from what i hear.

Re: Out West!
I mentioned this in a similiar thread on eagsports.com not too long ago. I wouldn't mind seeing SUU joining the Big Sky. Also wouldn't mind seeing Davis and Poly added, even if it is only as football members. I'm not sure about Seattle U or some of those others, though. Not sure how much of a "fit" they would be for the conference. And you're right, I know the BSC has traditionally shied away from adding schools only for certain sports. They're pretty sold on "all-sports" members, which is why I think Poly and Davis haven't been in the conference to date. Both those schools would be great additions, IMO.

Rumor picking up steam out here is that Seattle U will petition the WCC for membership within the next five years. Much better fit for them over there (Catholic school, basketball only, west coast).TBirdz wrote:Even though the topics of SUU, Poly, and UCD and conference realignment is talked about constantly, I figured I'd throw in my 2 cents on the whole deal. The last school to be in the Big Sky in either football or basketball, but not both, was Gonzaga, who left in 1979. The Zags/Bulldogs were also a founding member of the Big Sky in 1963, that was why the exception was made for them. For that reason, I don't see any scenario that would allow teams into the Big Sky in either football or basketball, but not both. Not in the near future, anyway. One requirement for us to join the Big Sky was to resurrect our basketball program. Also, when Northridge dropped football, the conference would not let them stay in the conference in basketball only. If I remember, the AD's at the time voted and Northridge was refused.

We don't want SUU to join because that would improve the Sky in fball and bball.

Re: Out West!
The Big Sky shouldn’t allow any schools into the conference as “football only”. If they are to let more schools in, make them pony up the money to have all the other sponsored sports travel. I would think it would put cal davis and cal poly at an advantage if they only had to fund the additional travel costs for football and not the other sponsored sports.
Also I don’t see an advantage with a 12 member conference. At that point, I would think two 6 member conferences would make more sense.

One advantage to a 12 team conference is being forced to play games against teams that would now be in your conference rather than negotiating less than favorable home and homes which can be bought out.
And you would think the number of at-larges would similar to what the CAA gets.
I think the more FCS schools out west the better, and the more with solid conference affilitations the better. I wonder the chances of more DII's moving up in the near future. CWU, WOU?

Re: Out West!
I see where you are getting at but I thought 6 was the minimum a conference needs to be eligible for an AQ playoff spot. My feeling is with a 12 member conference, not all the schools will play each other and there could be the potential to have schools with the same conference record come the end of the season. Basically the conference champ wouldn’t necessarily be determined on the field. Also there wouldn’t be more than 8 conference games anyways so that still leaves the schools to find 3 non conference games…which would possibly be harder as now all the regional FCS teams would be in the conference.kalm wrote:Would either be eligible for an AQ?SDHornet wrote:The Big Sky shouldn’t allow any schools into the conference as “football only”. Is the limit on 8 conference games an NCAA rule, or is it logistically impossible due to scheduling?SDHornet wrote:I see where you are getting at but I thought 6 was the minimum a conference needs to be eligible for an AQ playoff spot. Re: Out West!
I just assumed it was standard as no one at either FCS or FBS plays more than 8 conference games. Plus I would hate to see the same schedule every year if the same 11 teams were slated every year. It's almost like that for us at Sac State. Our rivalry game is against "the farm extension" so that only leaves 2 non conference games left. cal poly wants to play us every year as they are having problems putting together a schedule year in and year out. We only played them this year as they bought a game with Sac State for 100k. The Sac State AD wants to use the last schedule opening for a team that will give Sac State an easy win (DII School). Then take away a game for a payday game against an FBS school and we are pretty much looking at the same schedule year in and year out with only 2 teams changing.kalm wrote:Is the limit on 8 conference games an NCAA rule, or is it logistically impossible due to scheduling?SDHornet wrote:

I’m not sure what other Big Sky schools are facing in regards to scheduling but I imagine they are having the same issues.
