New Ordinance Says Pet Owners Must Spay, Neuter Dogs, Cats

LAS VEGAS -- Las Vegas has a new law affecting its numerous pet owners -- their pets must be spayed or neutered.

On Wednesday, the Las Vegas City council passed an ordinance requiring dogs and cats to be spayed or neutered by 4 months of age. The ordinance passed by a 5 to 2 vote.

Bravo Las Vegas! While, unfortunately, this will initially cause more pets to be euthanized due to people not willing to pay, this will help in the long run...more communities should take heed...

I'm all for fixing your pets, but I'm not sure the government should be able to force it upon everyone. There is a place in society for breeding animals.

My town has a really good idea, IMO. You are required to license your pets in my town. If you don't you're subject to a $500 fine and they do actually enforce it.

There is a nominal yearly license fee if your pet is fixed ($5). If your pet is not fixed the license fee is $100.

There is financial incentive to take responsibility for your pet. If you want to have an animal for purposes of reporducing you should be able to afford the $100 a year to pay for it.

IMO, and I am a homer on this topic, the government has the right since the unwanted animals being created through not getting pets fixed typically end up in the government-run shelter or a government official (police) have to deal with the stray. I like your town's idea as a good first step. but I like Las Vegas's better given the reality of pet overpuplation. IMO, unless you're a licensed breeder (& I don't even like them, but at least it's some sort of filter), you have no business breeding your pet anyway. Too many back-yard breeders out there trying to make a quick buck off of the suffering of companion animals.

I agree with you 100%. I was lazy and didn't read the article where it said licensed breeders are exempt.

I just don't agree with the all or nothing approach. Both of mine are fixed, but one is from a championship and highly sought after bloodline. If I wanted to breed him later, I should be able to after I evaluated his temperament. The fukker cost too much for me to not even have the option (using a breeder, of course). It turns out, he is not the best candidate, but that should still be left up to me and the breeder.

As long as you don't let your animal run loose. And that's why I think it's a good first step...I like the LV option, but would be happy if more communities took the approach of Dane's....in Asheville, you have to pay for a breeder's license or get your animal fixed (like Dane's)....however, enforcement is tough as you can imagine....their answer is, if they pick a loose dog up, it gets fixed regardless after the 72 hr waiting period....that gives the owners 72 hrs to find their dog & pay the license fee or pay the shelter to get the dog fixed...if you've lost your pet & haven't thought that perhaps ytou should check with the shelter within 72 hrs, well....those are the kind of oblivious dog owner's we don't need allowing a pet to run around with a "loaded gun"....

The thing that makes my town's method work is that its enforceable. Its a NYC suburb (upper middle class) with about 8,000 people in a 1.3 square mile radius.

We also have 10 cops on duty at any given time.


So in other words - I live in a large white (with a few asians sprinkled in) neighborhood that has its own full-time, underworked police force that has nothing else to do.

Cedar Falls requires pets to be licensed with the city too, but it isn't enforced worth a damn. $5 if nurtured and I think $20 if not. I don't know what the fine is for not registering them because I've never saw a ticket given for it. In fact, at the dog park in town you get in free with your registration, but for a non registered dog it is $2 a time to get in. Why let them in if they aren't registered?


In order to be registered here in CF your dog must be up to date on every type of shot there is for a dog.
