Byrd endorses a shining young statesman

Well, his state may have gone Clinton, but he didn't.

In a statement released by the Obama campaign, Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., announced his endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama saying:

"I believe that Barack Obama is a shining young statesman, who possesses the personal temperament and courage necessary to extricate our country from this costly misadventure in Iraq, and to lead our nation at this challenging time in history. Barack Obama is a noble- hearted patriot and humble Christian, and he has my full faith and support."

Byrd, who is the longest serving member in the history of the senate, is the President pro tempore of that legislative body. He is third in line of presidential succession, behind Vice President Dick Cheney and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Byrd is also a former member of the Ku Klux Klan, a secret society that advocates white supremacy, making his support an interesting choice.

While Byrd's endorsement comes a curious week after an endorsement would matter in state, it does show that perhaps Byrd has truly changed from his radical racists views that he held until the 1960s.

It was in the 1940s -- when Byrd was in his late twenties -- that he wrote to segregationist Sen. Theodore Bilbo, of Mississippi, vowing never to serve in an integrated military.

When confronted with the letter in 1999, Byrd remarked that he did not remember writing it saying, "I will not dispute the quote, though I consider it deplorable."

Byrd also campaigned against civil rights legislation in the 1960s.

Sen. Hillary Clinton won an overwhelming victory in last Tuesday's West Virginia primary, but did little to cut into Barack Obama's lead in the Democratic presidential race.

Clinton captured 67 percent of the vote and 20 of the state's 28 pledged delegates.

Tomorrow, Kentucky and Oregon hold their primaries with Clinton expected to win Kentucky, and Obama to win Oregon.

so now BHO is a 'statesman'?? xlolx

I watched part of this guy speak last night. Keep supportin' him. He's going to have the gub'mint tell parents they can only watch a certain amount of TV, kids can only play X amount of video games, and what and how much we can eat.

AND he's going to create MILLIONS of jobs by cutting ties to Saudi Arabians and their oil!

Amazing!

those strawberry-scented welfare checks are going to be sooo sweet!
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
