Death penalty for gays? Uganda debates proposal
By KATHARINE HOURELD and GODFREY OLUKYA, Associated Press Writers Katharine Houreld And Godfrey Olukya, Associated Press Writers – Tue Dec 8, 3:36 pm ET

KAMPALA, Uganda – Proposed legislation would impose the death penalty for some gay Ugandans, and their family and friends could face up to seven years in jail if they fail to report them to authorities. Even landlords could be imprisoned for renting to homosexuals.

Gay rights activists say the bill, which has prompted growing international opposition, promotes hatred and could set back efforts to combat HIV/AIDS. They believe the bill is part of a continent wide backlash because Africa's gay community is becoming more vocal.

"It's a question of visibility," said David Cato, who became an activist after he was beaten up four times, arrested twice, fired from his teaching job and outed in the press because he is gay. "When we come out and ask for our rights, they pass laws against us."

The legislation has drawn global attention from activists across the spectrum of views on gay issues. The measure was proposed in Uganda following a visit by leaders of U.S. conservative Christian ministries that promote therapy for gays to become heterosexual. However, at least one of those leaders has denounced the bill, as have some other conservative and liberal Christians in the United States.

From what I understand the Christian Coalition is adding this to their dogma.

Had to be some out there holy rolling fundie type. I think it would do a lot of God haters on this board to check out the work done by mainstream Protestant groups that aren't "fundies" before you all throw us out with the bath water. Not all of us speak in tongues, lay hands and scream, and vote for Sarah Palin. :coffee:

You're right, there is a ton of good work being done by christians and a large number of reasonable christians who don't wear their religion on their sleave.

However, the last president, his chief advisor, and the last Republican VP candidate were all your "rolling fundie" type. And that frightens the shit out of some people.

Very true. But the person pushing this, the Ugandan President, has close ties to the MAJOR EVANGELICAL GROUPS in this country - Focus on the Family (Dobson is a big supporter of him), Pat Robertson, Rick Warren.

These people are powerful, especially in the Republican Party - and not just the Palinites.

Let's not forget about the CatholicS fucking everything up with their condom bullshit, especially when AIDS was on fire a decade or two ago. Back then they blamed the disease on homosexuals.

They help create a mess of a country, and now that practically everyone has died from AIDS, they are taking credit for a decline in AIDS deaths now. Kinda like Obama taking credit for improving the economy because of a drop in unemployment applications - EVERYONE ALREADY IS ON UNEMPLOYMENT.

They are a desperate people on the verge of collapse thanks to men and the meddling of the religious.
"Sarah Palin absolutely blew AWAY the audience tonight. If there was any doubt as to whether she was savvy enough, tough enough or smart enough to carry the mantle of Vice President, she put those fears to rest tonight. She took on Barack Obama DIRECTLY on every issue and exposed... She did it with warmth and humor, and came across as the every-person....it's becoming mroe and more clear that she was a genius pick for McCain."

Funny, you don't see atheists doing this shit.

Atheists actually work for a better world, one of equality where everyone is freed from the yoke of ghost-based belief systems.

When will people learn that they can kill all the gays that they want.......and there will still be gays in this world because they are born everyday!

On a side note.......it's pretty ironic that the fundies are actually helping to SAVE gay people everyday by railing against abortion. ;)

1. There is a difference between Fundamentalist Christians and Evangelical Christians. At least bother to learn the difference before calling the former President and his cabinet "Fundies."

2. If any of you idiots had ever been to Uganda (or Zimbabwe or Nigeria) and knew anything about cultural mores among some of the prevalent ethnic groups there, you would know that the taboos relating to homosexual behavior predate Christian missionaries by hundreds of years, if not thousands.

Not defending this backwards sh!t, but at least try not to be as ignorant as the people you are criticizing.

1. (sometimes initial capital letter) a movement in American Protestantism that arose in the early part of the 20th century in reaction to modernism and that stresses the infallibility of the Bible not only in matters of faith and morals but also as a literal historical record, holding as essential to Christian faith belief in such doctrines as the creation of the world, the virgin birth, physical resurrection, atonement by the sacrificial death of Christ, and the Second Coming.
2. the beliefs held by those in this movement.
3. strict adherence to any set of basic ideas or principles: the fundamentalism of the extreme conservatives.

If you show me where GWB says he believes the earth is 6000 years old, and Eve was literally created from Adam's rib, then I'll agree with you that he is a fundamentalist.

While you're at it, why don't you look up hyperbole, Webster?

While Capn was generalizing it is true. Just as true as most Christians work for a better world.

I don't get why people don't like atheists. They just don't believe in God, not that they are hateful. (not saying this is what you are saying 89 just adding to the point)

Maybe that's not what you meant, but that's what you implied. I know that you know that's not true, but some of the these kids may not know you do appreciate a lot of the work religious folks do.
