Re: Montana-App St. TV Ratings
I've got a buddy who works for Disney-ABC Television Group out of Los Angeles (actually Burbank) and he said that ESPN was absolutely thrilled with that Saturdays slot...

The only complaints were related to more lights - the guys in the Sat-Truck noted that in the late 4th quarter the white screen light settings were producing 13.5 foot lamberts (where the broadcast standard is 16) so it was darker than they like working with... which effects the overlays and the white settings and the contrast etc.etc.
#2
and as the game progressed they felt like they needed one more camera angle or a live roaming camera crew with announcer to tour the stands and on the sidelines...
that's all:

Montana and App State marketing departments need to be lighting up ESPN's phones right now trying to secure at least ESPN Gameplan contracts.

This is good news for the home-home games. Maybe ESPN will pick those games up.

I heard through the grapevine that these ratings were higher than the 6 lowest bowl games last year.Grizalltheway wrote:Anyone know the average ratings for a lower-tier bowl game?

Based on DJ's #'s, we beat out 13 of the bowls from last year.

Maybe being on the NFL network had something to do with this, but still
Texas (bowl game) Rice 38, Western Michigan 14 Dec. 30, 8 p.m. NFLN 0.186 (millions of viewers)

Here are last years numbers. This game had more viewers than 7 of last years bowls did (including the two on NFL network), and would've been right between the papajohns.com bowl and the International bowl.Grizalltheway wrote:Anyone know the average ratings for a lower-tier bowl game?

And, that's with absolutely NO promotion. The only time ESPN mentioned the game was during the Kansas game before it (and the Div. II game on the 2). I'm impressed by the numbers.BisonAccountant44 wrote:Here are last years numbers. The fact that it was Rice and Western Michigan probably had something to do with it as well.JMU DJ wrote:danefan wrote:

Re: Montana-App St. TV Ratings
I know the schedule is set well in advance, but why in the hell do they broadcast one semifinal on ESPN and then broadcast the championship on ESPN2? I doubt the Montana-Villanova game will get anywhere near the viewership of the Montana-App St. game. Sure, there'll be a bunch of Montanans tuning in, but let's face it, that's not a whole lot of people and Nova's fan base is small. I'm sure some non-partisan football fans who happened to watch the App St. game might tune in out of interest along with some FCS fans in general, but it seems like if ESPN really wanted to showcase this game they would put it on the flagship station and promote the crap out of it. Instead, it seems like they're relegating it to the back burner (FYI- they are showing the Bucks-Cavaliers game on ESPN in the same time slot).

Re: Montana-App St. TV Ratings
Contractual obligations for sure. No way the NBA contract allows for anything other than the Friday night NBA game to be put on. That game will probably draw way more than the FCS game anyway.SouthDakotaGrizzly wrote:I know the schedule is set well in advance, but why in the hell do they broadcast one semifinal on ESPN and then broadcast the championship on ESPN2? This might all change next year when the game gets moved to January. There will be more playoff games televised. I wish I could find the TV schedule for next year.

Re: Montana-App St. TV Ratings
I think it had a lot to do with the fact that there are more FCS fans than these people realize and those that couldn't be there, watched it on TV, if they could.
Somebody, in some meeting, some time is going to bring up these very figures. You can bet money on it. Not saying anything will come of it but it will probably open some eyes.

Ursus and myself talked at length about this very same thing during the 3rd Qtr, and couldn't understand the reasoning behind it.Chizzang wrote:

I had my sunglasses on the entire game, and never realized it had gotten dark...thinking the entire time, "maybe they should have brought in more lights, but I kept that thought to myself until now!??!

Has there really been an FCS game on CBS?The broadcast of the 24-17 thriller drew a 1.9 rating (4 share) and an estimated 2,547,000 viewers nationwide. The 1.9 rating is highest ever for an FCS postseason game on CBS, ESPN or ESPN2.

Yeah, your Texas State Bobcats were actually one of the teams shown. Montana has a contract with the local CBS affiliate to broadcast all their regular season games and any games ESPN doesn't go after in the playoffs then the local CBS will show them. Now, nationally...I don't know but probably not...slycat wrote:Has there really been an FCS game on CBS?The broadcast of the 24-17 thriller drew a 1.9 rating (4 share) and an estimated 2,547,000 viewers nationwide. The biggest reason ... Montana-Villanova just isn't as compelling a game as App St - Montana.SouthDakotaGrizzly wrote:I know the schedule is set well in advance, but why in the hell do they broadcast one semifinal on ESPN and then broadcast the championship on ESPN2?
