Of course it would be difficult to determine as according to Wiki, the Spaniards and the church destroyed Mayan texts and along with them the knowledge of their writing system.
It's amazing how any atrocity committed by the government/miltary which is predominantly Catholic is the responsibility of the Catholic Church. By that logic, let's talk about how the Protestant Church in America was responsible for slavery and the slave trade. But hey, most slave traders and owners were Protestants.
