Another thought. How many Jews were killed over the centuries due to anti semitism approved and exasperated by the catholic and protestant churches?
Jews are smart. Had to be a scientist or two among em.

Yes, he condemned Servetus -- based on evidence forwarded from Geneva by Calvinists.
Keep in mind the precarious political situation in France at this time; by majority, a Catholic country, but with a growing and influential Hugenot population. In condemning a man already dead, the bishop was throwing a bone to the growing Hugenot population.
Re: Catholics aint **** around....
The Pope, in that speech, defended the actions of missionaries, not Conquistadors, and noted many of the missionaries condemned the actions of the Conquistadors.Skjellyfetti wrote:Pope Alexander VI gave Spain the right to colonize all of the New World West of the line dividing Spanish colonies and Portuguese colonies. The Pope and the Catholic church instructed Spain to convert the native populations (by force if necessary). The Catholic Church is culpable for the destruction of the Maya, Aztec, Incan, etc. civilizations.JoltinJoe wrote:
Maybe you can explain how the Catholic Church was responsible for the destruction of Mayan culture? If your answer is that Spain was a predominantly a Catholic country, and many in the Spanish military were therefore Catholic, don't bother.
It's amazing how any atrocity committed by the government/miltary which is predominantly Catholic is the responsibility of the Catholic Church. By that logic, let's talk about how the Protestant Church in America was responsible for slavery and the slave trade. But hey, most slave traders and owners were Protestants.
Though... the current Pope still defends actions taken by conquistadores:
http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN14287992In a speech to Latin American and Caribbean bishops at the end of a visit to Brazil, the Pope said the Church had not imposed itself on the indigenous peoples of the Americas.
They had welcomed the arrival of European priests at the time of the conquest as they were "silently longing" for Christianity, he said.
Pretty **** shameful. Indians "silently longing" for Christianity.![]()

Here's a tip for you, Sky. NEVER trust a media report about what the Pope said. Always get the text and read the speech itself. If you do this, you will discover -- over and over again -- that the media hears what it wants, and twists his words to create a story.

Joe, when are u gonna learn that it's simple attack and bait. There can NEVER be a true rational discussion about religion on this site. The militant atheists that live here spend more than enough time attacking something that they themselves claim they don't believe in. It's sad fact that in the past, blood was shed in the name of Christ. But the number of victims of such violence is rationally, perhaps, in excess of 100,000 in the ENTIRETY of history.
Now state atheism -- their victims literally number 100 million in the past century alone.

Ah, so it's ok for Catholics to condemn someone to death for questioning the trinity as long as said person escapes before the execution... and then condemn them after they die for political benefit as long as you don't actually commit the act of killing. Got it. Thanks Joe, I'm starting to see your rational here.
Still haven't seen an answer for Catholics hindering the progression of science besides deflection. At least I'm trying here, although poorly, to provide some evidence of Christian killings/torture.
So what we have so far:
1. Pseduo Scientist/Philospher Killed by Catholics
2. Scientist/Physisian Killed by Christians, Condemned by Catholics
3. Guy imprisoned Spaniards (my bad)
4. Woman killed by Christians for using anesthetics during childbirth
Let's go for round five:
5. Orazio Morandi
p.s. to the high and mighty CM and Joe, I'm not an atheist.

In all seriousness, even if we agree that Christianity was responsible for the stagnation of science in Europe the dark ages, then how can you blame it for the stagnation of science itself? There were civilizations in the Arab World, Southeast Asia, and Central and South America that were all advanced in their own right. Did Christianity keep those civilizations from advancing science? Or do the Christianity-bashers subscribe to the same theory as the atheist James Watson that only the pinkskins are blessed by evolution with the ability to invent and innovate?

But history has proven, beyond a doubt, that there is no greater enemy to man than official atheism as a state position. The number of dead at the hands of state atheism is 100 million in the past century. It is the single greatest atrocity ever inflicted on mankind.
You should be grateful you live in a country founded on the natural law precept set forth in my signature, and the on-going recognition of an objective truth imposed by a creator. You should be grateful for the faithful who still understand the connection between the fact of God and the fact of objective truth.
Take away God, you take away objective truth. Take away objective truth, you are left with relativism, and no basis for believing that there is an OBJECTIVE right or wrong. And when that happens, the worst atrocities are possible.

"Missions" back in those days were in fact invading armies from the west. If the natives were not outright murdered, they died of various plagues brought on by the christian horde.
Archaelologists have discovered amazing evidence of advanced thought in the aboriginal lands, what was not coopted by european, christian invaders was most like lost though genocide.
