Scientific achievement essentially grinds to a halt for 500 to 1000 years during a time when the catholic church had absolute power over the western world, their monarchs and thier armies. During the various inquisitions, unofficial murder sprees and brutal campaign against anything that ran counter to church dogma, which at the time, included the wonderful theories that the earth was flat and the center of the universe, it's estimated that millions of "heretics" were murdered or tortured. Joltin Joe's sanitized number of a hundred thousand or so is, well, Joltin Joe's number.

Yet no men or women of science, philosophy, medicine, art, alchemy, cosmology were murderd or tortured by the church!? This is what Joltin Joe and his organ grinder monkey Tman wants you to believe - because no one became famous - they were killed or tortured into becoming street sweepers or their life work was burned for no one to see, ever or they were publicly humiliated like Galelio and imprisoned, oh no, prison isn't torture!

That's a great and balanced article, App. Thanks for posting that. Really gives lie to the myth that the church impeded the development of science.

I hesitate to jump in this late, but here are some observations

The middle ages were not Europe's best years because there was no corrective on corrupt power either religious or political. There were abusive government and religious systems prior to this period but they did not last centuries. With the Renaissance and the Reformation that corrective (although itself bloody at times) is born.
Let's agree that science is not the savior either. Science is not just a tool of reason, it has also been the handmaiden of religous and political extremism (Tuskegee experiments, the final solution, the development of the A bomb ?)

Science needs a moral (perhaps spiritual) aspect or corrective to keep it from being abusive as other institutions in the past.

For those who say they are spiritual and not religious I say Welcome! You are now part of the fastest growing segment of the faith! (If you can call it that)
