You're second sentance is the key.

At a National Cemetary, it is up to the individual to choose the symbol, not the government. That is where your analogy fails

If a Government makes equal space available for all groups to display symbols, no problem. If a government only allows one religion to display symbols, big problem.

The kids who gravitated towards hall monitor duty.

These kids grew up and had no meaning in their lives outside of getting in other people's business in order to create dissention. This is how they validate themselves, by causing other people to react to them. They are also usually meek little pissants who wouldn't dare tell you their opinions to your face, they would rather complain and have somebody else do their dirty work for them.

The problem is that one day, they won't have Xmas displays to complain about, and then they will turn to someting else. Maybe it will be something important to a different demographic. Maybe we will see how people like it when contact sports or something popular like that offends these people.

Dback is absolutely right. There's simply no need for this stuff on public buildings. We're not a theocracy.
Not sure what you mean by that. That means that either A) it was a dopey analogy or B) I'm just not on my game right now.

Since I'm always on my game, I'm going with the dopey analogy. Maybe you can waste 20 minutes typing and splain it to me.

That being said, I mainly have a problem with the type of person who takes the time to complain about sh!t like this. It's the same person who complains about how other people decorate their houses. Neighborhood Associations are rife with these asshats.

I also don't care for the people who put crap on courthouses as a matter of defiance.

Stopped in a CVS Pharmacy the other night on my way home to pick up a box of Christmas cards. They had a display in the "Promotional" section with about 30-40 different designs...

...not a single one had the word "Christmas" on it.

"Holiday Greetings", "Seasons Greetings", "Holiday", "This Time of Year"...

...everything but "Christmas".

I stood there...aghast.

So...

...I walked over to the "Greeting Card" section...looked and looked...then I found some...

...under "Religious".

Cards TO a Priest or Pastor...found TWO with the word "Christmas".

I walked out. :ohno:

I'll never shop at CVS Pharmacy again. Count on it.

From the article quoted in the first post in the thread:

Stars and other religious emblems were ordered removed from Christmas trees in all government buildings in Sonoma County on Monday following a complaint by Irv Sutley, a disabled 65-year-old Marine veteran who said the symbols were "extremely offensive" and part of the "cult" of Christianity.

I hate neighborhood associations. :thumb:

Clue in, kalm, dback, Cap'n, other blabbering libs...

"Christmas" is a Christian holiday about Christ.

Don't like it?

Don't celebrate it.

But keep your fucking mouths shut about Christians who do wish to celebrate.

Or, go back to Europe.

catamount man wrote:Given man's depravity one should never be surprised at the actions of those who try to attack any religion or all religious symbols, contexts, etc. Man, in his evil condition, blinded by the false gods of time, space and the the natural dimension, has always sought to seek his way instead of his Creator's will. God has watched, listened, interacted where He deemed reasonable and has sat back and left man to his folly but one day, He will have had ENOUGH and then pity upon mankind on that day. Yet, through it all, He loves us.

Wishing all fellow believers a very blessed Christmas. I wish a Merry Christmas to non-believers as well. If my rant offended you, so be it. I am GONNA celebrate Christmas as I, and millions of others, see fit.

And I doubt if anyone supporting the removal of religious symbols from government buildings in this thread finds their use "extremely offensive" as the guy raising the stink in the article does. In fact, I happen to think the removal of Halloween, Christmas, and the Easter Bunny from our public schools is unfortunate.

But the victimization of christian rights is laugable.

No one is denying the right of christians to celebrate christmas. However, our government is secular, and we have a society that is growing fast and diversifying. So the solution is to allow all types of symbols or none. They tried the all types method at the Washington State Capital building last year and we saw where that led. So the none method appears to be the most reasonable without infringing upon anyone's rights.

BTW, anyone notice in the original article the mention of yuletide decoration? Perhaps he was really protesting against pagan symbols. :thumb:

"There's no place for angels atop Christmas trees, according to one California man who successfully lobbied for the removal of religious symbols at county buildings after spotting a yuletide decoration last week."

Really...
It seems more like a consumerist holiday all about shopping..?
I thought basically all organized religions had a holiday around the winter solstice, not just Christians.. that seems like a pretty exclusive opinion you're holding dear to

What you missed while you were stoned in college...

Islam celebrates Eid ul-Adha on the 10th day of the last month, based upon Islamic calendar, to celebrate God's mercy in allowing Abraham to not sacrifice his son.
Hanukkah, is based upon the Hebrew calendar, therefore the dates vary from year to year...often starting in November, was of course to celebrate the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem.
Kwanzaa is a black-separatist non-sensical holiday created in the 60's for hateful African-Americans as a further impediment to multi-cultural homogenization.

The only "religion" which bases it's holidays on solstices, is Pagans (Wiccans), or the religion of myopic self-love.

Hope you enjoyed my holiday, Hippie!

Thanks for the update...
That's good to know - I'll write that down

As you know I don't pay much attention to organized religions as they are specifically designed for people who need to be told what god is because (apparently) they have no natural connection inside them...

So Jesus is the reason for the season? Is that why the first Europeans in this country were forbidden from observing Christmas??

Why Christmas?

by The Rev. Dr. Christopher A. Brown

When the Pilgrims sailed into Cape Cod Bay in November 1620, they spent a month scrutinizing the coastline in search of a suitable place to land before deciding on Plymouth harbor. It was Christmas Day when they disembarked, and they declared their freedom from such "popish festivals" by working on a storage building. Their disdain for the celebration of Christmas was shared by the Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, who, once harassed by the Church of England, now rejected the dignified worship of the Anglican Church and outlawed the Book of Common Prayer. Among the Prayer Book usages that were forbidden was the observance of Christmas!

The Puritans saw Christmas as a holdover from Medieval Catholicism. So far as they were concerned it lacked the warrant of Scripture, and was rooted more in paganism than in the Christian faith.
