"Prison Floor" Kicks Madoff's Ass...

Source: Madoff fell out of bed, injured
Thursday, December 24, 2009

http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/story?secti ... id=7187293
DURHAM, NC -- A source tells ABC11 Eyewitness News that disgraced financier Bernie Madoff is being treated for serious injuries after he fell out of his prison bed.

ABC11 Eyewitness News first reported that Madoff had injuries consistent with an assault. Now, the source says Madoff was not attacked in prison, but that he fell off a bed onto his face. The source said there was a lot of facial bleeding.

Sources also confirmed Madoff was treated at Duke University Medical Center in Durham last Friday and discharged earlier this week.

According to the sources, Madoff came to Duke with facial fractures, broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

Prison officials won't confirm that. They say the 71-year-old is now in the medical clinic at the prison in Butner.

According a report by the Associated Press, Madoff's lawyer - Ira Sorkin - said his client was not assaulted, but "had some dizzy spells and some high blood pressure."

The AP reported Duke University Medical Center earlier said Madoff had been treated there, but later a spokeswoman said the hospital had never had a patient by that name.
....Broken ribs...

...Collapsed lung...

Must be some wicked hard floor.

Dude gets what he deserves.

I am sure there are plenty of people who lost money on Madoff that wish they could only have the crap beat out of them to get their money back.

Madoff is the poster boy for laissez faire capitalism. I'm quite sure he's Grover Norquist's hero.

I still can't figure out what he did wrong..?
So he lied to people and stole their money - banks, investment companies, wall street in general - has been doing that forever and they get reimbursed with federal money

It is a cornerstone of the no-regulation capitalism espoused by today's Wall Street.

And I don't feel too sorry for most of Madoff's 'victims' who were trying the get richer quick scam themselves.

Madoff's scheme isn't capitalism any more than phishing for credit card and bank account numbers.

As for Cleets' comment, in a real capitalist system those banks and corporations would just be allowed to fail, and for that reason it's probably a good thing we don't have a pure capitalist system.

A real capitalist system is utopic because humans are greedy by nature. Therefore you need government at the least to regulate growth and enforce contracts.

Capitalism by definition is private control of production and distribution. Madoff's fraud and Wall Street's control of government whether you think they're morally right or wrong are a part of the capitalistic side of our mixed economy.

In all honesty, and contrary to some of my musings, I like capitalism, and I am a capitalist. But I also like the fact that we have a mixed economy, and recognize that historically speaking and, I believe in the long run we are far stronger when we strike the right balance between capitalism and government intervention. Madoff is simply another example of how we've swung a bit far to one side.

On a Madoff tangent....

From the newspaper:
NY Lawyer can't recover Madoff millions from his ex

A judge says a prominent NYC lawyer can't recover money he paid in a divoce agreement when he believed he and his ex-wife had millions of dollars invested with Bernard Madoff.

Steven Simkin says he gave Laura Blank $6.6 million as her share of marital assets in July 2006 after more than 30 years of marriage. The figure included $2.7 million that was half the value of his Madoff account.

But the account with Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities was empty. Madoff later admitted cheating thousands of investors and was imprisoned.
That's ridiculous. The settlement was calculated based on perceived assets, which turned out to not actually be there. Thus the settlement should have been recalculated to adjust for that.

We didn't even have to "shrink government down to the size where it can be drowned in a bath tub" to be rewarded with a sociopath like Madoff.

Both counts are spot on. People like Grover Norquist, Stephen Moore, and Alan Greenspan are being proved more and more wrong every single day.

I would say RIP Reaganomics except Obama so far has continued to follow it. :ohno:

Human failures and sociopaths like Madoff and his hangers-on exist regardless of the system of government.

However, unlike most on these pages who derive pleasure from either screaming or lighting their own farts, you deserve credit for making serious posts.

But "spot on?" Perhaps your generalizations make you feel better, but you have yet to hit the target, let alone the bullseye.

In a forum such as this "making serious posts" accomplishes nothing... Certainly no more than making sarcastic posts and poking fun at the situation - the world remains unchanged - and that's not just my existential or even Absurdist (Absurdism) tendencies talking...

Language is first persuasion...
When that fails it is then only a reflection of the speaker
Self righteousness and self glorifying (your specialty) are as telling as humor and sarcasm

The implied sense that the silly and sarcastic are somehow "confirmed know nothings" is a profound assumption and mostly grounded in your own insecurities...

Seriousness is the last refuge of the shallow and fundamental  says I

In all honesty, as someone who has to deal with pain in the ass government regulations daily and who works harder than most and probably relies on government less than most, I can argue your side as well.

And yes, my comments were smarmy, full of hyperbole, and meant to provoke.

But you have to seriously question a system that rewards a sociopath like Madoff and allows him access to power and economic advantage over a very long timespan. He wasn't just a two bit thief, he had access. He was at one time the head of the freaking NASDAQ for christ's sake. And I think you can draw parallels between his actions and those of some of the financial services and health insurance company exectutives. It takes a special kind of person to layoff 10's of 1000's of workers not in order to make avoid losing money, but in order to make even more, or to use recision to deny heatlh benefits to sick people who will go bankrupt while you're compensated in the 100's of millions.

Laissez-faire capitalism is utopic, it fails to recognize the factor of human greed and dishonesty. It rewards the notion that it's only illegal if you get caught, that if you amass enough wealth, you thereby amass enough power to legislate unfair and/or immoral business practices as legal.
