Dude... are you okay..?
Scientists make millions of predictions
and just about everything today you can see hear smell touch or taste - a scientists is involved with
(as a side note: Have you ever looked at a global population chart over time... fairly staggering)
Try holding your bible up the the same light

that you use to judge scientists...
An honest question Chizzy - do you think the prediction of 10 billion people by 2010 (which was made about 15-20 years ago) was made carefully and rigorously and took into account many variables or do you think it was something that was done sloppily and/or with a hidden agenda? I mean, if this was a prediction from the 1970s I'd just throw it in the garbage dump with the rest of the predictions of environmental disaster from that time that didn't come to pass. But this is a prediction from half a generation ago. Calling it an air ball is being generous.
Yes, scientists make predictions...but if they are done irresponsibly or with bias they can be dangerous. Being way off on your prediction of where proxima centauri will be in 30 years is one thing - making a prediction about an ecological disaster that will affect human life and screaming the sky is falling to every government that will listen is another thing entirely.
For Example:
In 1960 there were less than 1/2 (Yeah that's right LESS THAN HALF) as many people on this planet as there are today... that means your average 50 year old person has seen the worlds population double in their own lifetime
Just a few years after WWII the worlds population was growing so fast all reasonable global population predictions made in just the previous decade were laughable... so new population Algorithms were required to get the numbers closer to the actual "explosion" that was happening
What could not be predicted was that China and India would actually "moderately decrease" their crazy exploding growth cycles...as a result the global populations have only grown at "ridiculous rates" and not catastrophic rates as expected
and as far as hidden agendas and sloppy work - I agree - there are lots of regular humans that are scientists and these regular humans are entrusted to be honest and forthcoming - however - they are just like priests and clergy or politicians and wall street tycoons - the percentage of dishonest humans is FLAT across the board no matter what their job is... so as a result Churches and corporations and governments and doctors and lawyers and teachers... a percentage are just dishonest
