Will 2011 decimate the FCS????

I don't pretend to be a SoCon expert, but I'd say Marshall was definitely the cream of the crop from 1991-1996

Probably the best team ever in I-AA in 1996. Of course if there name had been Stephen F Austin and they hadn't been the poster child for moving to I-A, the NCAA would have stripped all of their victories and put them on probation instead of waiting for a second investigation three years later that landed them on the hot seat.
Can you tell I have little respect for the school. They may be the perfect example of how a school should act now, I have no clue. But watching their rise in basketball in the 80s to be put on probation and then to watch their rise in football in the 90s then being investigated after their 96 win with many issues discovered and then those issues be ignored by the NCAA for appearances sake (as I said didn't want their I-AA champion moving up poster child tarnished) , it is hard to respect most of their accomplishments.

SoCon Champs during that period.
1991
Appalachian St. (NC)
1992
Citadel (SC)
1993
Georgia Southern
1994
Marshall (WV)
1995
Appalachian St. (NC)
1996
Marshall (WV)
I think you would find outside of the SoCon that most think Marshall ruled the SoCon and the rest of I-aa during that period due to their playoff success. But remember, they had four years of never leaving Huntingon ( I don't think they played elsewhere during those years) during the playoffs including the champ game. Once you get into the SoCon you would find folks with a different opinion. No one in the SoCon would deny they had great teams. But dominate for an extended period of time, not a chance.

Back when I was a kid and you'd only get 1 I-AA game on tv (the championship) it seemed like it was Marshall vs Youngstown St. every year. When they then parlayed into a spot in C-USA. You could add Georgia Southern too.
Re: Will 2011 decimate the FCS????
App also beat then #1 Marshall in Boone under the lights in 94 (and in Huntington in 95). Then App lost to VMI in the final week to hand them the SoCon title. App was always up there with Marshall into the 90's. It's just that Marshall had more success in the Marshall Invitational. The only year they dominated the SoCon was 96 when they went 15-0.proasu89 wrote:Courtesy of cfbdatawarehouse.com, one of the most useful sites a fan can have, It looks like FU was 13-7 vs. Marshall and ASU was 11-6 during their conference years. Yep even more, they didn't dominate FCS. They made a lot of championship appearances as kemajic says. which shows they were a hell of a play off team. but, you can't dominate FCS when you didn't even dominate your own conference.
Fun fact. Mickey Matthews was the OC at Marshall in the early 90's. Another reason to hate JMU.
As much as Furman, Georgia Southern, etc hate App St, they'll say we're angels compared to the blundering turds. Marshall fans in those years were the worst of the worst.

I have never actually hated ASU or GSU fans. Been a little peeved at times. But not one of you guys have ever spit or thrown a beer can at me. Marshall fans did. And you are right ASU was generally up there with Marshall in the 90s. The difference was Marshall packed close to 30K into there stadium a game so the playoffs never left Huntingtion. You guys can relate now huh (Except for this year)

OL FU - Make sure you let me know where you are in Boone this coming season when Furman comes up for their annual ass-whoopin. I'll throw 2 or 3 beers at you to make up for lost times.

If you view winning an FCS conference as more important than getting a chance to win the NC game, you are one sick fan.Skjellyfetti wrote:Montana fans love using "National Championship appearances" as the measure of success.
And, it was about whether or not Marshall dominated the SoCon... which htey did not.
Regarding your Montana crack, Montana had two shots at Marshall in the "Marshall Invitational," winning it in '95 and losing it to Randy Moss, et. al. in '96. While the corruption was well known around the '96 team even at the time, did you hear Montana whining about it, as is going on here?

Marshall left 1AA for the MAC in '97, which they dominated their first 6 years. They moved to Conf. USA in 2005.Fresno St. Alum wrote:Back when I was a kid and you'd only get 1 I-AA game on tv (the championship) it seemed like it was Marshall vs Youngstown St. every year. The point was dominance at least at the start. You can't dominate a division when you didn't even dominate your conference. Montana has dominated the BSC. The argument for dominance is in many ways stronger for Montana than Marshall.kemajic wrote:If you view winning an FCS conference as more important than getting a chance to win the NC game, you are one sick fan.Skjellyfetti wrote:Montana fans love using "National Championship appearances" as the measure of success.

I was on the committee when Women's Crew was seriously debated at SBU. It's actually quite surprising how much money this sport costs. Transport is a bother, not to mention boathouse expenses, maintenance, scholarships, etc...danefan wrote:In the northeast we add women's crew.
It's certainly a status symbol for a school to host a strong crew team, but there's a reason for that. Plus, access isn't restricted for women to major championship regattas (except possibly the NCAAs, which isn't that big a deal in the world of rowing) nor national polls.
On the other hand, both Albany and SBU host 19 sports, so wouldn't actually need to do anything non-football to move up.

Albany will, however, convert our Women's Crew club team into a Varsity sport when we get to full scholarship for purposes of Title IX.
Our location near the Hudson River and the existence of an already robust club team makes it the easiest way to satisfy Title IX.
Re: Will 2011 decimate the FCS????
I hope you guys do. You host a great regatta at Head of the Hudson, and the facilities are excellent, esp if you possibly agree to rise jointly with RPI crew, who share (and I believe control) your boathouse. The team has a great history, though after losing its coach has gone downhill in the past couple years. I'd love to see Albany Crew return to prominence. Hopefully it'll be a kick in the pants to the SBU team who, while unlikely to see varsity status any time soon (though on the list with women's fencing as potential Title IX related additions - I got them into a few NCAA rated events when I founded the program a few years back so both teams would require minimal schedule additions to move to varsity status), desperately needs to find its winning way.danefan wrote:True about needing to add sports to move up.Redwyn wrote: I was on the committee when Women's Crew was seriously debated at SBU. Yep, women's crew is what ODU added to meet the Title IX requirement (along with softball and volleyball).

So what two women's sports, totalling at least 22 schollies, that you think MONTANA should add to achieve your move-up goal?kemajic wrote:I've seen FB threads hijacked before, but not by crew....

Their record against Montana was 1-1. IN Huntington.OL FU wrote:Yep, and 88 when Marshall beat FU, FU returned the favor in Huntington during the playoffs by beating Marshall the same year. During the last ten years of Marshall's tenure in the SoCon (the same period that they went to 6 national champioship games, 4 of which were played in Huntington and only two of which they won) their record against ASU was 5-6. Their record against the mighty Mocs was 6-4 They did put a hurting on FU during that period. I think it was 8-4. but let's face, from 92-96 FU stunk it up pretty badly.proasu89 wrote:
