As far as Christianity being forced on children, it might happen in some fundamentalists sects, but i don't see that happening in mainstream denominations. The ones that i see coming to faith later are successful financially, relationally, and are "whole." Science and the modern world has not given them the meaning they seek.

D, it wasn't looking for meaning that brought me back to my faith...and it wasn't that I was scared or lonely...it was my children who brought me back...D1B wrote:Not really. Major differences. Had this discussion before.soul man wrote:

I don't know if these people are coming back to find meaning or because they're scared or lonely.
And that kinda flys in the face of the idea that their parents "forced religion down their throats"...
I had left my church completely and my wife was an occasional attendee at a different denomination...the kids rarely if ever went to church...
Yet, by exposure to the world, they brought us questions that, at first pissed me off because I had to do research into religion that I didn't want to do....
Then, because of these questions, my wife asked to find out more about my religion (she was raised in a very conservative protestant denomination, I a RC)
So off to adult education we went, and shared what we learned with the kids as they asked more questions...we learned together...
Eventually, my wife converted and we became a practicing family...and our faith is a central part of our life...
Now, there is a difference between the religion (RC) and the organized RC church...the faith has never strayed from its original teachings while we know the Church has wandered all over the place, sometimes wallowing in sh!t like the current challenges with the lack of moral leadership (pedo priests)...
To sum up...not all parent force religion on their kids...not all those who return to faith are old or lonely...and science & religion can coexist very nicely if you have an open mind to both...

Care to elaborate on the nature of your children's questions? Who and where you got your answers from?
Argue all you want. Your examples of adults "finding" religion are the extreme minority. Most children grow up under the influence of christianity and most adults "find" religion later in life to compensate for some need or deficiency, in your case it's not having the guts to give your own children an honest answer.

Yes I don't. However you used your inquisitive children as a counter argument. If I'm wrong then please elaborate and clear it up. What were their questions? Whom did you seek guidance from for answers? How did your children react? Why didn't you tell them to find out on their own? Did you seek guidance from authorities of other religions? Did you ask an atheist what he or she thought?Col Hogan wrote:D1B wrote:

When it comes to religion and you, there is no such thing...
In your very next post, you declare DEFINATIVELY that my God is "impossible"...
You are not open to debate, or challenge...you have your web browser open and set to jump on anything with a counter arguement that you already accept as the definative truth...
If someone has honest questions about my faith, and is open to discussion...I'm ready to engage...
You, my friend, are simply looking for a way to exhibit your vast knowledge of anti-religion sites...
I'm not qualified for that debate...nor do I have the time...
I know my faith...accept it...and know who to go to when I have questions...
You are not on that short list...sorry...
P.S., I fear nothing from you...I hope that doesn't offend you...I fully expect you will use this response, though, to point out some weakness in religion...Such is life on a message board.....

I'm going to start a new reply simply because that last one is getting too long and is confusing in my opinion to follow...But I will refer back to it...
I elect not to debate religion with you just as I would choose not to debate a bible-memorizing fundentalist...
You and that fundamentalist are similar in that you both are ABSOLUTE in your positions...
There is no debate with people who are absolute...
I also don't want to go into a couple of very personal, and one very painful, thing that was part of this awakening, as you very well put it...
So, I'm sorry I brought up a personal example...mostly, I'm sorry because you can't just accept...but then, that's your biggest issue with religion, and people who believe...
There are some things we just accept...

D1B, everything you state is a reflection of your own conduct. You take far more shots at people than any other poster at either board (except maybe bdfan). Nobody fears you, as you're more of a collegiate Type-A "know-it-all" who provokes argument for sport, which was your purpose in starting this thread, as usual.
As for reticence to discuss personal experience, nobody...and I MEAN NOBODY, on these boards are more secretive about their personal religious experiences than you. I understand that you may have never had any religious experiences (religious education/membership/attendance at religious functions including church ARE NOT "religious experiences"), and that's not a criticism, merely an observation, but by blanketly dismissing all religious beliefs as delusional rationalization by lazy, weak-minded sheep, belies the fact there are more believers on our planet than atheists. If anything were to be studied, it should be the fallacious practice of atheism. What is deficient within the mind of the atheist that prevents them from accepting a source of strength, wisdom, life, or sustenance which exceeds man's capabilities? Moreso, what is the defect which causes the atheist to fear and ultimately attempt to destroy all things that SUPPORT religion (as well as religious believers)? While most religions encourage propogation of their philosophy and life practice, I would argue that MOST (not all), understand that "belief" must be developed voluntarily, otherwise, the tenets are invalid. An atheist cannot be forced to accept religion or become a believer, ergo (
Unfortunately, your intent to destroy Catholicism and the belief systems of any practitioner of religion underscores the philosophical wisdom that man attempts to destroy that which he fears. ERGO (
As for your assertion this is a "debate", the Colonel has appropriately put his foot down and declined to participate in your shenanigans. It’s rather sad, but your M.O. is to take note of personal habits of posters, then use that private, familial information to personally attack the member, as you have done repeatedly in the past. Were you to demonstrate age-appropriate respect and discretion within these so-called "debates", I think you'd find others more forthcoming to explain their reasoning.

An atheist cannot be forced to accept religion or become a believer, ergo () atheists are not to be feared or mocked for their inability to make a spiritual connection (akin to a person's failure to have children).
Unfortunately, your intent to destroy Catholicism and the belief systems of any practitioner of religion underscores the philosophical wisdom that man attempts to destroy that which he fears. ERGO (), if anyone in this debate is acting from fear, it is most likely yourself.
As I said before, I don't give a flying rat's ass what he believes. He made his argument, I called him on what I now gather is a fabrication or at least a gross exaggeration regarding the genesis of his faith and he resorts to taking shots at me and again, acting like a crybaby.
No defect in atheists - you are the one's believing in ghosts and fairytales. Sad, someone as smart as you, caught up in that nonsense.

It was YOUR choice to engage this thread, and me. How convenient it must be to pull out "past behavior" as means to avoid discussion. I don't give a flying [*]f**k what you believe or what religion you are, just interested in your previous statements as they relate to religious motivation/your counter argument.
Sounds like you had a religious revelation or awakening in the past. For the purposes of this discussion, perhaps you should reconsider and tell us what you and your family went through.

Inability to acknowledge the fallacy of the atheist's perspective/belief in a finite body of knowledge they believe is within man's scope to comprehend, is a defect. It's jokingly called, you don't know, what you don't know.D1B wrote:

Re: Chicago archdiocese settles sex abuse case for $12+ million
Question for D1B: Is it possible to NOT believe ANY of THAT and still believe in God? I'm a firm believer, but also believe that the bible is more a book of fables handed down through the generations than a documentary of life on earth during those times. I doubt anybody lived to be 600 years old...I don't think anyone walked in the desert for 40 years...I don't think the earth was covered with water from a giant flood, and I don't think God rained fire down on Soddom and Gomorrah (sp?) because they were "sinners". I DO believe, however, that there may have been a great flood (precipitated by God knows what) that covered the majority of the earth near where the story originated...I believe that there may have been a scientific explanation for the destruction of Soddom and Gomorrah...etc., etc., etc. Does that make me a bad Christian?D1B wrote:Inability to acknowledge that believing the world is 6,000 years old, god cloned himself just to get his ass kicked to save us from something who the F knows what, Noah built an ark cuz god got pissed, again, and killed every man, woman and child, and loaded two of every living beast on the planet, mary was knocked up by a ghost and so on, is utter bullshit. OK, but only if you promise not to laugh...D1B wrote:

...it's really, really personal.
Around 1982, I became engaged to my first wife. We were both still pretty young, and learning about "worldly" things. Sex was great, but we yearned to learn more about our existence, our purpose. Having read the "Masters", studied at universities, even having taught by that age, it just seemed something important was missing.
Then, around New Years, we were planning on going out with friends, and normally that would have meant our spending the evening with many of her attractive, single girlfriends, many of whom I knew had the hots for me.
Anyway, being the good hearted man that I am, I suggested rather than going out and spending the night hanging with her attractive friends, we just have a nice meal at home, and spend "some money" on a great bottle of wine.
Not $9, or $10, or even $11 or $12 dollars, but the outrageous sum of $45. So, off I went in search of this "special" bottle. I found this one true wine "cellar" in northern California that stocked many fine beverages, and after great amount of contemplation, chose a bottle.
The night of New Years came, and we prepared a fine meal of quail, pate, and had great conversation about our dreams, goals, passions, and plans for children. It was during that conversation, while dining, I realized I had selected an exceptional bottle of wine, perhaps the finest wine ever made. And then, it struck me...
It was at that moment I realized that it was God's plan for me to spend the rest of my life...
...drinking great wine and head fvcking Type-A dipsh!ts.
And the wine that night?
The 1978 Heitz Cellars "Martha's Vineyard" Cabernet Sauvignon. Irrefutable proof of God's existence.

(Psst, D1B...
BOO!!!
...jackass...!!!!)
