Pat Paschall in at RB right now for the West and tearing it up. Overbay is in at TE. Looks like Nichols will be in sometime in the second half to close the game. Kansas' Todd Reesing is QB right now.

They just said that Eastern got clearance from the Big Sky Conference and the NCAA to install red turf at their stadium

Both Todd McShay and Marty Shottenheimer were giving Nichols a lot of praise before he started here in the second half.

Also, they were talking about EWU's field turf... we received clearance by the NCAA to get RED field turf with black endzones! :D

Ouch, Paschall just took a shot from Ohio State's Worthington. Welcome to the big show Pat.

Then Overbay catches a long pass.

He had a nice run the play before though. I don't see him being doing a lot at the next level, but could be a nice scat back

East-West Shrine Game Thread

Post by SmallCollegeFBFan »

Among those names I posted earlier that would be in the game Missouri State TE Clay Harbor was a late addition to the roster.

So far the FCS players have gotten a lot of time. Paschall and Harbor have been the two best players from FCS so far. Skelton has had his moments of good and bad. Nichols has been fairly sharp but has mostly hit on short passes.

Oops missed this thread when I posted the other one. All I said in that one was that Paschall, Nichols, and Harbor have been the best of FCS in this game so far from what I have seen. The MVP might be a defensive player unless someone start going off from the offensive side here in the last couple minutes.

If they'd kept Nichols in longer he'd put up some bigger numbers. Unlike the other two West (FBS) QB's, Nichols hasn't thrown a pick. And he had that great scramble (albeit risky) in the endzone to avoid the safety and made a perfect pass into double coverage. Sucks that receiver dropped the ball when he hit the ground. Overbay has been solid too... caught everything that was thrown to him and catchable.

Great finish to this game. I hope the West picks it off in the endzone on the last play.

They gave a big shoutout to Nichols and Kafka at the end of the game, saying they're the best two NFL QB prospects in the game. Also seem to think Nichols will get a late combine invite after his performance today.

I only watched a bit... but, Nichols looked really good, imo. He's really improved since his trip to Boone a couple of years ago.

Nice little clip from Todd McShay about Kafka and Nichols:
http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=4852583
And the quarterbacks who really stepped up... two guys that came in here without a lot of hype: Mike Kafka from Northwestern, and Matt Nichols from Eastern Washington. Both outplayed other guys from bigger programs with stronger arms and with better size. I think you're going to see both Nichols and Kafka wind up drafted.

I am glad someone mentioned that because there is a misconception out there. See they voted on the combine in mid December, which is why most players got invites late in December. There is a "waiting list" of seniors who will get invites depending on how many slots the underclassmen take up after they declare. The amount of waiting list seniors was decided earlier this week and invites were either sent out last night or they will be sent out today, according to my sources at the combine. Basically the players that could be added have already been determined and the Shrine Game really had nothing to do with it. A lot of media outlets, players, agents, etc. all have always thought a strong performance at the Shrine could get you in but it won't.

For example, last year Jason Williams had a very strong outing at the Shrine and everyone thought he would get an invite to the combine with him being on the waiting list and having a strong showing. He was low enough on the waiting list that he still did not get an invite. Everyone thought he was a big snub and it proved he was on draft day by going in the third round. There is no question he should have been there. Among those players who have not been invited so far that could end up proving that they should have gotten combine invites and might not get one include Matt Nichols, Danny Batten, Deji Karim, Quentin Scott, Sean Lissemore, Pat Simonds, Antonio Robinson, and Ryan Perrillioux.

One thing I want to mention is that all of these players are guys I thought could have been worthy of getting one based on their play this season. Players who have big time pro days and all-star game performances that did not get much hype during the season are not players that I consider snubs because many times it is impossible to know that a 6'1 190 CB that looks around a 4.55-4.60 on film is going to train and get down to a 4.45, jump a 38-inch vertical, record a 10 feet plus broad jump, etc. and then vault up the board. A lot of people considered Jason Williams a 4.55-4.60 type speed guy last year and his mid 4.4 really vaulted him up from the likely 5th round selection he was looking at before his pro day.

When you were describing a 6'1" 190 CB I thought you were talking about Derek Cox, who was another good example last year. A combine invite is nice, but NFL scouts usually get it right by draft day.

Glad to see you've got Lissemore listed as on the radar. The Tribe's strong season certainly helped his visibility, but he really launched himself last spring with a knockout workout for a few scouts at W&M. Ran a 4.80 40 at 292. You might know for sure, but my guess is they are looking at him as 4-3 strong side DE, or a 3-4 weak side DT.
