I would have to agree. Just because your field may be red or blue that is not what is going to get you national attention. Boise has had a blue field for sometime now, and no one really talked about it until they put a great product on the field. It doesnt matter what color the grass is, it matters how good the team is that is playing on that field.Mountaineer wrote:I think you're giving the media and average football fans waaaaaaaaay too much credit. Red turf would bring attention to the program due to the uncharacteristic color, which ultimately puts the team and how we perform in the spotlight. EWU is a program on the rise within the ranks of FCS, making the playoffs 4 times out of the last 6, and I think the national exposure we'd get because of the red turf (good or bad), would help EWU football. FCS teams as a whole fail to be recognized in the national college football spotlight unless they upset a big name team (aka Appy beating Michigan), or do something audacious.
Lookin' forward to seein' how it turns out though.

Re: Red turf at EWU?
Agree completely. It is gimmicky and will not hold anyones attention. Boise had the Blue Turf way back in the Big Sky days and there was no attention paid to them and they were laughed at by most due to the gimmick and they started it. It may be mentioned in passing when it is on regional broadcasts but they are not gonna get any national attention out of this other than to be a punching bag. The national media already has someone that has had this for over 20 years and it has a catchy albeit stupid nickname. It's a gimmick and will have little value to the national type story lines much like New Haven. Hell, I bet 99% of people don't even know that New Haven has a blue field. I will be interested to see it as well but I don't see any way that looking at the red field all day is gonna be a pleasant experience.Mountaineer wrote:I think you're giving the media and average football fans waaaaaaaaay too much credit. It's his stubby sausage fingers, they mash multiple keys at a time and make it difficult for him to post. There's a picture of them around here somewhere. Plus, he has to deal with Dial Up internet, and that's only when Canada decides to provide them with enough power to run a computer.

Re: Red turf at EWU?
Lack of fundamentals have NOTHING to do with the proliferation of gimmick offenses. It's usually lack of personnel. Cases in point: Run and shoot and A-11. Any serious student of football would know that if one doesn't have receivers and quarterbacks who can read defenses (i.e. football fundamentals), these offenses will fail. Teams resort to these offenses because they don't have the manpower to play smashmouth football.TheGreek wrote:For one...EWU has more of a chance of appearing on a National Broadcast than New Haven does.
IMHO...colored turf is like a gimmick offense...only there because the fundamentals are lacking...and although colored turf really has nothing to do with the type of play or the strength of the program...even mighty Boise State is looked at in a different light..
Just sayin'
Even coaches who insist on running anachronisms like the Single Wing and the Wishbone are responding to personnel issues; here, it's quality receivers. These offenses seek to either jam the ball down your throat or beat you with deception because they have no pretensions of having any passing capability.
These are just opposite sides of the same coin. I haven't seen a gimmick offense that has been proposed in response to a lack of fundamentals BECAUSE A LACK OF FUNDAMENTALS WILL KILL ANY OFFENSE. Gimmicks are a response to personnel. End of story.
Back to the main topic: I'd love to see my Lodi Flames do this. It would be hard because we share the field with the bogus purple-and-gold Tokay Tigers. But a red field with white lines would be awesome. I wish EWU well.

All i have to say is...i think maybe they should stick with the regular colored field with black endzones and white lettering with red trim

Re: Red turf at EWU?
It's EWUs field to do what they want with...
But seriously, other than being giddy about it, can anyone say it's been studied and that there are no side issues such as:
- How it REALLY looks on TV...I can't watch a game broadcast from Boise
- How will it impact the fans view during the day...and at night...
- How it will impact the players, especially on longer pass plays...you know, the QB looking downfield, the reciever looking back...
Good luck with a red carpet.....

Re: Red turf at EWU?
Unlike blue, red's an extremely distracting color. Your eye naturally sways to red objects if it catches a glimpse of it. This could be a good thing on the playing field for EWU, or a bad thing for their fans...the "sore" part of "eyesore" might actually come to literal fruition. But then again, I'm just kinda rambling...

Sounds like a done deal, turf will be red with black end zones and will be in for the Montana game in early Sept!

I guess I am old school--but I cannot stand watching Boise (not that I watch them much) play on that blue field-----it is distracting...

I agree....I can't watch it...gives me a headache...plus, I think it gives them an unfair advantage when they wear the all blue uni's, it's like camo, you can't see them!!! And talk about color clash, did you watch any of the bowl game this year!!!TribeNomad wrote:I guess I am old school--but I cannot stand watching Boise (not that I watch them much) play on that blue field-----it is distracting...

I personally think the red and black would look cool as hell (/duck)
Besides, EWU may as well try something to make their stadium stand out from those of AA high schools.

Re: Red turf at EWU?
What if they did an all black field with red endzones? Less of an eyesore, and less of a distraction. I mean it would get really hot in the sun, but all of those fieldturf fields get really hot in the sun anyways.

I played for a school that had black field turf endzones, just the endzones, and the trainers wouldn't let us practice in the endzones until the temp dropped late in the season due to the head from it. I can't imagine a field made black could be safe at allJConnolly wrote:What if they did an all black field with red endzones? Less of an eyesore, and less of a distraction.
